25.01.2022 On this day, 52 years ago, the patrons of the gay bar, the Stonewall Inn, decided they were fed up with the constant police raids, harassment and brutality. Lesbians, trans and gays heroically fought off the cops for the next three nights in what became an all out riot. The riot kicked off a militant struggle for LGBT+ rights which drew inspiration from the defiant and radical women’s and black liberation movements in the ‘60s. The Gay Liberation Front was formed, the name ex...pressed solidarity with the Vietnamese struggling for national liberation. The GLF was very clear that the struggle for their liberation was bound up with liberation of all oppressed. The movement would reach Australia and by 1978 the first Mardi Gras was held in Sydney. Despite being brutally attacked by the police and having their home addresses and names published by the Sydney Morning Herald, the protesters defiantly built a protest movement that would challenge the deeply entrenched homophobia of Australian society. 24.01.2022 Today the Socialist Alternative RMIT club came out to the speak out in solidarity with the refugees who are on hunger strike at the MITA detention centre in Broadmeadows. Australia's inhuman treatment of refugees who have fled their countries for fear of their lives shows some of the worst barbarity that the Australian state can mete out. At present, at least 3 of the refugees are in intensive care as they fight the abject cruelty they face daily. In the face of the barbarism... perpetrated by both the Liberal and Labor governments the fact that small victories can be won in the struggle for refugee rights, such as temporary visas for the Murugappan family from Biloela, should show that organised, mass action is the way forward to achieve real social change. Come to the next protest for refugees on Friday 9 July at the Park Hotel on Swanston Street to continue to demand justice for refugees and send us a DM if you want to get more involved.

24.01.2022 There have been many new developments in Palestine over the past couple of weeks. Recently Israeli settlers attempted to create an illegal outpost near the town of Beita, sparking protests in which 4 Palestinians were shot dead. It’s been revealed that the IDF frequently break into Palestinians’ homes in the middle of the night to search them, terrorising families. And in the West Bank Palestinian activist Nizar Banat was murdered by the Palestinian Authority police. The Pa...lestinian Authority is the organisation, given Israel’s blessing, to maintain law and order and security for Israelis who pass through the areas under their control. As the below article details, the reputation of the of the PA has been decreasing, especially because of their role in suppressing Palestinian protests. It may very well be that the end of the collaborationist PA is in sight. Its creators and funders now realise that it no longer has much sway over the Palestinian people. The PA can no longer use, as it did previously, its administrative, financial, and media arms (now exhausted) combined with its repressive police agencies to impose its authority in the West Bank. 17.01.2022 The last few weeks have seen horrific revelations of the historical mass murders of Canadian Indigenous children. Indigenous children were removed from their families and communities and forced into boarding schools, often run by the Catholic Church and the British colonial government. The aim of this program was to assimilate the children into Western society, to force them to forget their traditions, language and spirituality. The last of these schools only closed in the ...1990s. The wide scale abuse has already been reported, with thousands of former students coming forward with horrific details of violence and it was estimated that 4,000 students were murdered by these schools. But these new discoveries of almost a thousand unmarked graves suggests that the deaths and violence has been vastly underestimated. So far only a few schools have been searched so it is expected that there are thousands more bodies. This news is a shameful condemnation of the systemic racism that colonial societies inflicted upon indigenous people. Capitalism is a system that requires racism, oppression and violence so we must fight against it and all its crimes. 15.01.2022 We were out on Bourke St today promoting the upcoming rally this Saturday at 1pm to continue the fight to Free Palestine: PROTEST - Back to the Streets for Palestine: Cut Ties With Israel Rally Narrm (Melbourne)

15.01.2022 Keep up the fight to free the refugees! Rally tomorrow, 2pm @ 701 Swanston St, Carlton. United Rally: Free All Refugees! Close Every Detention Centre! The Australian government’s border regime is criminal. People fleeing war, repression and threats to their lives are locked up indefinitely, without trial. Some of those still locked up in Melbourne have been detained for up to 8 years. They are essentially confined to a single room, windows opening an inch or not at all, with screens to prevent them from seeing the protestors in the streets outside. They have shown incredible and inspiring courage in keeping up the resistance for so long and under such duress. Join the fight alongside them tomorrow and commit yourself to building the fight for a world with out borders! Get in contact with the RMIT Socialist Alternative Club today.

14.01.2022 Proud to protest for refugee freedom.

09.01.2022 Everyone should make sure they get down to the weekly Freedom Friday protest this week to continue the fight to free the refugees. There are still 12 men locked up in the Park Hotel in the middle of Melbourne and over 1400 refugees in offshore and onshore torture camps. It's more important than ever that students are involved in the struggle to free these refugees and stand against the bipartisan detention regime of the Australian government.

01.01.2022 Fridays For Future - Global Climate Strike (VIC) Pandemics are just another example of the consequences of the environmental destruction caused by capitalist competition. Not only has the need to ‘protect the economy’ (i.e. the profits of the bosses) led governments around the world to neglect to properly prepare for and contain COVID-19, but pandemics like COVID are made vastly more likely by profit-driven deforestation and climate change. Our environment shouldn’t be a comm...odity to be exploited and manipulated for profit. Workers and students across the country are rallying on March 19 as part of the global climate strike to demand an immediate transition from fossil fuels and the sociopathic environmental policy of the Australian government. ‘As climate change altered habitats, species left some areas and moved into others taking their viruses with them. This not only altered the regions where viruses are present but most likely allowed for new interactions between animals and viruses, causing more harmful viruses to be transmitted or evolve.’ Message this page to get involved in building the fight for climate justice!
