Osteoporosis can affect any bone but the most common sites are the hip, spine & wrist! Osteoporosis is known as the silent disease because usually there are no symptoms before a fracture occurs! ... So what are the risk factors? Female Over 50 Family history Lifestyle- smoking ,excessive alcohol intake & low activity levels Underweight Medical history - low vitamin D & calcium levels & some medications Think you might be at risk, now what? 22.01.2022 Exercise is one of most important components of any breast cancer treatment plan, however it is often the most overlooked! In a recent systematic review by Singh, B & colleagues in 2018 which studied 61 clinical trials of women with all stages of breast cancer, found that those who underwent an exercise program during treatment had significantly improved quality of life, fitness, energy, and strength, as well as significantly less anxiety, depression, and lower body mass inde...x and waist circumference compared with the regular care groups. Pat is our resident fighter, she spent most of 2018 fighting breast cancer with multiple surgeries and radiation treatment & this year she continues with chemotherapy and still manages to prioritise her exercises! Pat has learnt to love exercise because she knows how much better she feels! She never misses a session and has worked hard to get the strength back in her arm! Not sure where to start or know someone like Pat, send us a message or comment below! #breastcancercare #breastcancer #strengthtraining #resistancetraining #exercise #exercisephysiology #exercisephysiologist #essa #fitnessmotivation

21.01.2022 Fact or fiction? Children shouldnt train with weights because it stunts their growth. Fiction! #fakenews ... Current research suggests that when children perform regular, supervised strength training with appropriate prescription and coaching, it does not negatively affect growth or maturation (Malina, 2006) Resistance training in youth has actually been shown to have positive effects on motor skills (such as running and jumping), body composition, and bone mineral density. It has also been effective in reducing the risk of injury - especially in youth sports. Now we are clear that resistance training is beneficial for youth, is important to note that correct technique, loading principles, and individualised exercise prescription is imperative for the program to be both safe & effective. #youth #athletetraining #exercisephysiology #exercisephysiologist #strength #resistancetraining #athlete #injury #weightlifting #fakenews See more

16.01.2022 Shoulder injuries are so common and can restrict us from doing things we normally do and enjoy. 15.01.2022 Did you know that people living with mental disorders have a lower life expectancy? A new global report led by Australian researchers found that those living with mental disorders were also more likely to be living with obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Researchers said that this is related to a host of likely risk factors such as sedentary behaviour, side effects of medications and lack of adequate physical healthcare. ... "For patients with depression, the risk of developing cardiac disease, hypertension, stroke, diabetes, metabolic syndrome, or obesity is around 40% higher than in the general population," the authors wrote. Co-author Dr Rosenbaum, a research fellow at the University of New South Wales, stated that lifestyle interventions, encouraging people to be more active and eat healthier, were known to reduce chronic disease in the general population therefore it should become a core component of mental healthcare. The authors recommended a multidisciplinary approach to mental health, incorporating health professionals with expertise in nutrition, physical activity and behaviour change. Dr Rosenbaum stating "The evidence is very clear that having non-traditional services exercise physiology, dietetics, allied health should actually be a routine part of mental health treatment." In Australia we have a system for doctors to refer people to see dieticians and accredited exercise physiologists but it is being under-utilised. If you have any questions about the benefits of exercise on mental health, send us a message or comment below! See more

15.01.2022 Training Volume on Hypertrophy A study by Aube et al (2020) has highlighted that there may be an upper limit to the dose response relationship between training volume and muscle hypertrophy. A 8 week training protocol utilising either 12, 18 or 24 sets per week produced a similar effect on muscle hypertrophy despite differences in training volume. Analysis of this data revealed that while some subjects who saw the most hypertrophy increased their training volume during th...is study, for other this actually came as a decrease. @strongerbyscience
