24.01.2022 If youre planning to have timber decking as part of your reno, then this post is for you. Heres our top 4 tips for making sure your new deck has a long {+ lovely} life. Select a quality hardwood, ideally from a specialist timber merchant. Youll get select grade timber + these guys work closely with Forestry Regulators to ensure the timber is sustainably sourced.... Give it THREE coats of good quality decking oil. Many timber merchants offer a pre-oil before delivery, then once installed {and cleaned}, two more coats will do the trick. Choose an oil-based coating, rather than water-based, for longevity. Maintain! Decking needs to be oiled every 12 months, or sooner if exposed to weather. Give it a clean one + good coat of oil. Avoid letting water pool on your deck. Leaking gutters, pot plants, hose taps etc that leak continuously will eventually do damage! As an extra precaution, use a domed top decking board. They are milled with the slightest of curvatures on the top of the boards so water runs off and down through the gaps in between. Built by us Spotted Gum decking supplied by Mortlock Timber

23.01.2022 This arrived in the mail {and it felt like a bit of a sign.} The original plans for Grandma + Pops house on Roath Street, Cardiff. Ill admit, I needed a minute after seeing Pops name + signature on the documents. Theres plans + building permits from 1962. Letters from the local council. Quotes from local contractors + handwritten notes by Pop. Grandma kept it all. ... Anyone that runs their own small business will tell you theres plenty of blood, sweat {literally} + tears, so this was the greatest personal reminder of why Im doing this. 22.01.2022 #RenoTip Were big fans of character details + making the most of any original features {that fit in with your reno design, of course.} Weve seen plenty of cool old fireplaces ripped out because they dont fit the room layout, take up too much space or in most cases, theyre just a bit old + dated. Heres a few tips for giving old-school fireplaces some fresh appeal.... Paint in a bright, bold colour. {Greenhouse Interiors shows us how its done} Use matt paint & sand back for a vintage finish. Clad the outer in fibre cement sheeting + your choice of tile. Make your mantle a feature with a slab of hardwood or stone. Retrofit a modern gas fire. {try Subiaco Restoration} Pic - Armelle Habib #perthrenovation #perthbuilder

19.01.2022 Why you need a {white} textured tile in your reno // If youre renovating or extending, keeping a cohesive feel between spaces is key. As builders, were always thinking about how to make new spaces blend in with the old. We love the humble white tile in a bathroom/kitchen/laundry {especially in older Renos) for its ability to make small spaces appear bigger, brighter + cleaner.... But a white tile with texture? We reckon theyre a bit special. Aside from creating visual interest, textured tiles come in a huge variety of styles + patterns that often replicate some of the design features found in your home. You might find design inspiration from Cornices Wallpaper Fretwork Wainscoting Chances are youll find a textured tile to complement the pattern + help to bring that style into your wet areas for a cohesive look. {Just make it white } Check out some #texturedtile inspo below

19.01.2022 Our background? Were carpenters. And with over 20 years in the trade, theres not much we dont know {or love} about the craft. So were proud to continue to offer our custom carpentry services under the Roath St brand.... We love working with timber for many reasons. Aside from being lightweight, versatile and {for the most part} sustainable, its natural beauty can soften an area, adding warmth + character. Include timber in your #HomeReno with: Decking made from hardwoods such as spotted gum or jarrah Feature cladding using cedar or pine Bespoke furniture, like bench seating or daybeds for your backyard #perthhomes #perthbuilders #perthrenovations See more

18.01.2022 Imagine what’s possible // There’s a bit of a perception that building a new home from scratch is the only way to get exactly what you want. Sometimes. But not always. ... For the proud owners of this Mount Lawley home? They can stand in the original part of their much-loved house {formerly their isolated kitchen} and look out over a cohesive + connected living/dining/alfresco, which flows into their beautiful backyard. 15.01.2022 Like the rest of the country + the world, weve watched in sadness as horrific bushfires burn through the East Coast. NSW is my home state, and I feel deeply affected by the devastation + loss of life, homes, entire communities + our beautiful habitat. Its hard to be on the other side of the country + feel such helplessness. Ive felt inspired by the generosity of so many, giving anything they can to those who have lost everything. Ive joined my friends, family + commun...ity by personally donating to the Australian Red Cross who are providing emergency assistance + recovery programs for affected communities. While there is still more I want to do + Ill be considering how else to help, i also wanted to auction off our carpentry services to the highest bidder. My heart wants to be in NSW physically helping families to rebuild their homes + while that isnt quite possible, this is my small way of putting my skills to work. Maybe you have an unfinished #homereno project you need help with, need repairs or simply want the handyman services of two {hard-working} carpenters + a labourer for a day.... were not fussy. We just want to donate our time + raise a decent amount in doing so. The details Get the Roath St carpentry team at your place for a day {were Perth based} DM us your {best} bid + type of work/job/project 100% of the winning bid will be donated to the Australian Red Cross disaster relief and recovery appeal Benn, Roath St #australiaisburning #australiabushfires

14.01.2022 The winning bid Thank you to everyone who got behind our Building for Bushfires auction + helped spread the word! Because of this, we connected with Drew from MD Tax, who generously bid $2,000 for our help with a home reno project. THANK YOU.... We cant wait to put the tool belts on {and, more importantly} donate this bid to the Australian Red Cross in support of families affected by the bushfires.

11.01.2022 What a month! The Christmas rush gets us every year. With much of the construction industry shutting down for a couple of weeks, we always go that little bit harder in December to get things done. So, looking forward to a good break now with family + friends.... Before we do though, a massive shout out to the good-looking rooster to my right. Josh is not only handsome {hes single btw} but hardworking, talented + trustworthy, turning up every day with a smile + a sense of humour. Cheers, Josh + Merry Christmas everyone

11.01.2022 Go on, think outside the box. This little space under the stairs couldve so easily been another storage cupboard, but what better use for the space than a hidden custom wine room. {Cheers to that.} By adding detail like a beautiful barn door on a matte black rail, it even becomes a feature point of the room.... 11.01.2022 At the end of the day, its all about being able to come home to a space where you can truly relax and feel comfortable. Having that perfect somewhere to unwind somehow feels more important at this time of year, when were all just pushing through to get everything done before Christmas That space for everyone is different. ... For us, our sanctuary is sitting out in the back yard in the shade {preferably beer in hand} watching the kids run around on the grass. Where is your little sanctuary? Pic by Jody Darcy

07.01.2022 This is Pop. Pop was one of my favourite people. As a kid, we spent a lot of time at Grandma + Pops house on Roath Street in Cardiff, NSW. Pop worked at the sulphide plant but was a natural craftsman, spending most of his spare time on DIY projects. He worked on the house constantly over many years, building additions + making improvements. I can remember watching him work away his shed out the back where all his tools were, immaculate + each in their rightful spot. ... Looking back I think Pop played an integral part in generating my interest in building + that continues to this day with Roath St construction. Cheers, Pop #perthrenovations #perthbuilder

07.01.2022 The government has announced a new HomeBuilder stimulus package today We spoke to 9 News Perth this week about the positive impact a grant will have on local builders, trades + suppliers, helping to keep the industry moving in the second half of the year {check out our BTS pic } Heres what we know;... $25k for owner occupiers who build new homes or carry out substantial renovations. 04.01.2022 Bright idea #renotip The best thing you can do for your renovation? Plan for it.... It might sound stupidly simple but good planning can save you time, money { + headaches} later on down the track. Spending time on pre-planning will ensure the end result is what you hoped it would be {but with a bit less stress in getting there}. Our tips? Visualise the space + think about what you want from the area. Chat to a builder early on to make sure what youre thinking is achievable. Consider functionality and how your family will use and interact in the space A designer or architect will help you plan + will present ideas in a way that helps you understand the scope + scale of the project. Create a mood board. It will help you to nail down your own style, likes + dislikes. Think about colours + finishes as well as layout + functionality. Have an idea of how you want to spend your budget. Knowing what elements are priority for you and your family {or what elements might need to stay on the wish list} until the costs of the project are clear. See more

02.01.2022 Grandma + Pops house on Roath Street was where our family used to come together. The kitchen was full of light in the mornings + was an endless source of cups of tea + biscuits. The large living room, added to the rear of the house, became the back drop to every Xmas lunch growing up.... It was the venue for birthdays, engagements, pool parties, grand finals, test matches and boggle. The doors were rarely locked. And everyone was always welcome. It was a home away from home for all of us. They lived there for over 30 years until Pop passed away in 1999 + Grandma eventually had to sell. I have driven down Roath Street a few times since. Not often. To anyone else, it just looks like a house. To us it was the house. Do you have a Roath Street in your family? #RoathStFamily #perthrenovations

02.01.2022 Claremont project When Tanya + Matt bought their family home, they had a few renovation goals in mind. More space for their family {2 kids, 4 pets}... Open plan living Retain some of the 1960s character but lose the outdated style We got to work by ripping out the dated kitchen, laundry + bathroom, along with all the floor coverings and window treatments. We knocked down the arched wall through the middle of the house {no mean feat} to create an open plan kitchen/living, and converted the garage into 2 x bedrooms with open lofts that could be used as an elevated study space {or teenage hangout.} Heres a few before + after shots... Safe to say the clients were {very} happy to lose the lilac bathroom + are loving life in their new space.
