24.01.2022 Hi All, another interesting week of coaching, a warm one also, and it will get warmer, I think back to my old days competing, and of those tough old pros like Laver and co, they never complained, just got on with things, I wonder whether we are all getting a bit soft nowadays? I have a very diverse client base at present and really enjoying the challenge of working with the individual themselves, I have a young student about 9 or so, getting to the stage of trying to rally ...whilst keeping to some fundamental techniques, this simply takes time and patience, this girl understands this and continues to have fun within the whole process, I have to say I love the kid's attitude! I just mentioned patience a minute ago, and I can't help but wonder if this is a bit of a lost art these day's in our google world of instant answers, we must get quick results or maybe we'll try something else, because obviously I'm not excelling yet, the teacher isn't telling me I'm special and only gives me a pat on the back occasionally! Sometimes I wonder what chance our kid's have today? If we tell our kid's they are special every 5 minutes, we are creating a group of anxious children that can't figure out why the world is not treating them just like mum and dad, we need to be getting back to a humble approach, teach our kid's to hang in there with something, that you cannot be good at everything in 5 minutes, it doesn't have to be tough love all the time, but an honest love, realistic, then, a pat on the back might mean something! I think teachers and coaches will have a good idea of my drift! Happy hitting! See more

23.01.2022 Hello All, and Happy New Year for 2019, whew! hot summer as usual, and funny though it may seem, this is my quiet time, school holidays, people having been away, etc. Some may think I would be busy, with all this tennis starting on tv and such, oh well, that's okay, it has given me a leg up so to speak on my leg rehab. On that front, I have checked in with my doctor, x-rays no surgery required, physio located a muscle deep within groin region called pectinius, given one eas...y to do exercise, while sitting down, and noticing excellent improvement, will have to keep it up for awhile, and not let hardcourts cause me to lose heart! I am looking forward to getting back to work, mostly when school returns, hi Lota kid's, and of course my private lessons at Chandler and now for 2019 Rochedale as well, I'll reveal more about that very soon! As you watch tennis on tv, try to spot the difference between regular tv presenters doing mostly an MC role, and those who are genuine tennis commentators, whilst I don't always agree, I was delighted to hear Todd Woodbridge hit upon something in Matt Ebdon's match against Zverev. He basically said that Ebdon was rotating too early into his forehand, and in his words falling off the ball, that is finishing around to the left too much and losing control and balance. This is in my humble opinion the number one fundamental mistake I see over and over each year, there are other fundamentals for sure, but this is the main thing I work on when little Johnny or Suzie comes from somewhere else for a fix! Watch carefully how many pro's throw themselves around too much, as in overrotating, and how some don't, listen to what they say about Roger Federers balance, and how he has avoided a lot of injuries! Happy hitting! By the way don't just watch tennis, you do not have to be wonderfully gifted to play, it's about exercise while having fun! Cheers Rob.

22.01.2022 Hi All, Well the holidays are almost over and school recommences soon! I have to say I am looking forward to getting back into it! It will be great to catch up with my students and continue to work with some amazing kid's, and adults keen to keep learning and improving. Remember tennis offers some wonderful benefits, it keeps you moving, good old plain fresh air, we can show our young people that real sport is more fun than playing on a screen! Children can learn to improve ...coordination in very simple ways, adults too for that matter, tennis is obviously a non-contact sport and quite safe. I could go on about the benefits of tennis, but I think most of you can figure that out for yourselves, there is one MAJOR thing I would like to point out, 'A person does not need to be particularly coordinated or sporty to enjoy playing tennis'. A lot of people get caught up watching tennis on television and thinking 'Well I can't do that', no no, that is not the point, it's about just having a go, start with a hit and a giggle, and just work on slow, easy improvement, you may surprise yourself, 'I have seen it so many times'! Hope you are all enjoying the Aussie Open, great to see a few humble hard working polite young players doing well, (you get the point)! Happy hitting! Pic's to come with a few comments beside, I don't know why I have to put the photos on first and then do comments, I am rather techo challenged! See more

17.01.2022 Hi All, Well Mr Facebook tells me I haven't posted anything lately, 'Oh well, I guess I never really wanted to be a manic poster'. It has been nice to watch Wimbledon, but I haven't sat up late, used to go to bed and set the alarm, if I do that now I just roll over and say no way! A pity Roger is out but he's had a great run, and he will continue on very competitively for a while yet I suspect, well done to Kevin Anderson, what a serve this guy has! Interesting semi's with N...ovak vs Rafa, and J Isner vs K Anderson, the glorious unpredictability of sport! On a more down to earth level, this weeks coaching has been particularly enjoyable, last week of the school hols but still had some lovely private lessons, I still get a real buzz watching students improve and have fun at the same time! I will include some photos again with comments added, I try to show pic's that display some sort of technique, so please look for the comments! Enjoy Wimbledon, always emphasise the D folks, and you will sound informed, also enjoy The Tour De France, love that countryside and listening to Mr Gate's cooking instructions! Cheers Rob.

10.01.2022 Hi All, Well, feeling tired but good to get some things done and out of the way for another year, as in, finishing my First Aid course last week, part of the requirements of being a tennis coach, as is getting a current police check and redoing your Bluecard and following up now with an online course to supplement that, followed by going online to do this years registration at Tennis Australia and hoping that the technology works! It did,'whew'! I'm tired just writing that! ...Anyway, now commencing year 32 as a qualified coach. Great to see Rafa still going well in the French Open, I think he's in a rain delay at present, shame to see Novak drop out, it looked like he was getting back to good form, but, small steps I guess, sorry GM. Simona Halep is looking strong, what a determined girl, she just never gives away easy points, amazingly fit too. Top marks for SBS putting it on free to air, including highlights at 5pm, nice one. I shall put some photos up with some comments to accompany when you click on them! Happy hitting, see you soon! Rob. See more

08.01.2022 Hi All, Another French Open has come and gone, congratulations to Rafa Nadal on his 11th title in Roland Garros, his 17th major, and Miss Simona Halep winning her first major! A lot of people will make a big deal about Rafa's clay court domination, which is fair enough, but how many other players would love to have 6 other majors spread out over the other 3 grand slams? Heck, I'd settle for one! Dear Simona, what a great effort, a girl that underwent a breast reduction, no ...joke, to help with her movement/balance and such, she is an amazing athlete, fit as they come, and with a big heart! So pleased to see her efforts pay off for her and Aussie coach Darren Cahill ! Wimbledon is coming up soon, we have The World Cup on now in Russia, and The Tour De France in July, love looking at those chataue's, don't know if I spelled that right, oh well, looks like I'll need a few naps in the middle of the day! Comment of the week from one of my 15 yr old students; 'My brother won't get serious and hit the ball properly for me to practice' me;' Oh well mate I guess you were young and a bit like that at one stage' student;' Oh yeah, I was much worse than him, but I grew out of it' Priceless mate! Recommendation for late night sports events, grab an hours kip through the day, a good coffee or tea, a couple of Scotch Fingers and a large blanket, oh and maybe a cat! Happy hitting! Rob.

07.01.2022 Hi All, a terrific week of coaching this week, and an especially good day yesterday, starting with an hour's hit with my lad Nick before taking him to work, and a great lesson with keen student Michael in the arvo! Nick played really well implementing a change that makes all the difference, lovely to see, it's amazing how habits can build a home deep into the subconscious, if they are not good habits they can stick to your insides and take some moving, I tell students that ...you have to flush the incorrect thoughts out by constantly feeding in thoughts that are corrective and suit the player, eventually the right thinking will stick, it takes time, and much perseverance! Michael's lesson was at Chandler, just down a bit from The Plantation'', a nice synthetic grass court that my new friends Shane and Janelle have kindly allowed me to coach on, please keep this in mind anyone who may have been thinking about giving tennis a try, you need only learn a little to enjoy a great game and get some exercise into the bargain, maybe a group of four? That's enough from me, I shall post some photo's and make some comments, enjoy your weekend. Rob! See more

04.01.2022 Hi All, I have been very busy lately and once again I am reminded that I haven't posted for awhile! Lovely to start off a few new students at Lota, nice bunch of kid's, having coached professionally for 32 yrs now I can tell you it makes a difference dealing with polite children, adults too for that matter, anyway the point is, we are alway's about teaching way more than hitting a ball over the net! Thought I would simply post some photos and make my comments alongside each one, enjoy your Friday and happy hitting! Cheers Rob.

03.01.2022 Hi All, Well another long day of coaching and other things, and not walking too bad at the moment, such simple things make me smile! Yesterday I posted about Chris's and my 31st wedding anniversary, such a blessing that girl, and today, some great kid's to work with, a short drive home and pork spare ribs just ready to go as I walk in, and I mean walk in, not hobble, yay! My rehab has a ways to go, but grateful for the improvement, you tend to know when a particular moveme...nt normally hurts, and so when it doesn't, YES! A quick Andre and Steffi story- it seems Andre and Steffi were in the early stages of hooking up, and so here they are hitting on a tennis court against Andre's dad's ball machine cranked up and spitting balls out like nobodies business, and Andre misses a backhand, Peter Graf grabs the racquet in disgust and say's 'You hit that shot like this with a quieter racquet, just like I taught Steffanie'. Andre's dad is livid with Mr Graf and wants to fight him then and there, they take their shirts off and circle around! Before the two old warhorses could do any damage Andre and Steffanie jump in and order them back to their corners! After all that Andre and Steffi did well to get together, love wins I guess! I will add a few pic's just for fun, happy hitting! Rob. See more

01.01.2022 Hi All, Another satisfying week of coaching, seem to have just a great mix of lovely people to teach at the moment, young and old, sorry middle agers, keen to learn, committed to improving and having some fun along the way! A lot of people think that they have to be really good to play sport, not only tennis, but any sport, this is so not the case! I have had some exceptional players in the past, and by the time they received a state ranking, they get stolen away by coaches... that promise the world, well the enjoyment I receive coaching regular folk is unreal! The truth is years ago, nearly everybody played some tennis, at least occasionally, and guess what? They had fun whether they were any good or not, it was great exercise and a great release for stress, certainly better than looking at screens all day if you get my drift. Anyway, finished off the week nicely with my lad Nick, a good solid two hour session, followed by him shouting me a nice coffee and mini sausage roll at Banjo's Bakery and Café in Cleveland! Happy hitting everyone, look for some pic's I shall add, hopefully they will appear close to this piece, I will comment on the pic's. Cheers Rob! See more

01.01.2022 Hi All, Interesting couple of weeks, it was lovely to start the school term off with my Lota kid's, really good bunch, and then some very enjoyable private lessons. Next, the rain comes, cracked windscreen and various bills come at once, I get really frustrated when the radio guy's go on and on about how great the rain is, maybe some is good, it needs to go west! Oh well, swings and roundabouts, my boy gets his licence in the pouring rain, well done mate, then a student or two (older ones) treat your business like you just there whenever they feel like it, and then the contrast of great, reasonable, responsible, cooperative students ask for a make up lesson, YEAH! That's life in business I guess, you get the lot, okay enough of that, I will post some photos and make some comments, happy hitting!
