17.01.2022 Robe Christmas Festivities 2020 To keep the Christmas Cheer alive this year we have organised some alternative activities to maintain the festive spirit! On Sun...day 13 December 2020 starting from 4pm, Santa is coming to ‘cruise around town’ on a designated route (refer to the map on the poster). Santa will be cruising around town in the back of a boat, and followed by a few of his local emergency service helpers! What a great chance to wave to Santa and also say thanks to our local emergency services for everything they do for our wonderful town! The District Council of Robe and the Robe Professional Fishermen’s Association will also be sponsoring a ‘Residential and Business Christmas Display Competition!’ Get in the festive spirit and decorate your front yard or your business window/the front of business! Judging will occur on Sunday 13 December 2020 (after Santa’s Cruise Around Town) between 7.30pm and 9.30pm. Don’t forget to submit your entries for judging!

17.01.2022 We’d like to take a moment to thank each and every one of our courageous SA Health staff members, who are working tirelessly across the health system to protect... the health and wellbeing of South Australians, especially over the Easter holiday. We’d also like to thank: All others on the frontline, working alongside us to protect South Australians. Everyone who is staying home, buying only what they need, and checking in on their loved ones. All the employees, businesses and delivery drivers making sure we don’t go without. All other essential workers who keep South Australia moving.

16.01.2022 Guides and Brownies in Kingston SE. Photos and history from the Kingston SE National Trust Museum. A GUIDES MOUNTED PATROL WAS FORMED ...IN 1939 TO CARRY MESSAGES IN A NATIONAL EMERGENCY. A mounted patrol of Girl Guides was established in Kingston SE together with a cyclist patrol. The mounted patrol is believed to have been the only girls mounted force in South Australia. It was formed in 1939 to carry messages in a national emergency within a radius of 20 miles, keeping off the main roads as far as possible. The cyclist patrol was formed with the same objective, but to operate within a radius of ten miles. It was in 1939 that Miss Margaret Goode, (one of the districts leading horsewoman) of the ‘Snuggery’, 22 miles from Kingston formed the mounted patrol. See more

13.01.2022 THE CAPE JAFFA LIGHTHOUSE LANTERN ROOM. HISTORIC FACTS: ... THE KINGSTON SE HISTORIC LIGHTHOUSE WAS IN OPERATION AT CAPE JAFFA 14 YEARS BEFORE THE COMPLETION OF THE STATUE OF LIBERTY IN THE USA. AND 17 YEARS BEFORE THE OPENING OF THE EIFFEL TOWER IN PARIS. This 3.6 metre diameter room contains the very valuable Light Apparatus which floats on Mercury and is operated on the weighted chain principle of the grandfather clock. THE 142,000-CANDLEPOWER LIGHT SHOWED FOR A DISTANCE OF 40 KM. The Prisms are made of Quartz Crystal. (Silicon Dioxide) Period of Light Flash: Every 3 3/4 Seconds. Duration: 1/2 Second. Every Light House has its own ‘Flash’ so ships at sea can tell by the ‘Flash’ exactly which Light House they are near. Methylated Spirits and Whiting were used to polish the 1728 prisms of the lenses. This job would keep the two keepers busy for nearly a week. Blinds were drawn around the Lens by day to protect the prisms from the sun. THIS APPARATUS WAS THE LAST OF ITS TYPE TO OPERATE IN AUSTRALIA. IT OPERATED UNTIL 1973. THE ORIGINAL BURNER WAS A MULTI-WICK BURNER WHICH WAS REPLACED IN 1909. The Apparatus had to be tested at the commencement of each watch and adjustments made, if necessary, to ensure the keeping of correct timing. All Repair, maintenance and painting was done by the keepers. THE LANTERN AND APPARATUS WERE CONSTRUCTED AT THE WORKS OF CHANCE BROS. & CO BIRMINGHAM ENGLAND. THE LENS SECTIONS EACH WEIGH UP TO 200 KGS. THESE SECTIONS WERE CARRIED UP THE SPIRAL STAIRCASE BY TWO MEN ONE AT A TIME DURING CONSTRUCTION. See more
