25.01.2022 Feels like this just opened, but weve only got a little over a week left for Im With Her at Darlinghurst Theatre Company. Catch it while you can, its really worthwhile!

25.01.2022 I've been working with Dino Dimitriadis from Apocalypse Theatre Company for a number of years, leading up to Angels In America Pt. I & II by Tony Kushner; and that started me thinking about the advantages that come from a working relationship like ours. See what you think - and, see more from the show - on my blog now!

24.01.2022 So, just for a change from writing about photography, this week I've been TALKING about photography - on the Closing Night: Theatre Therapy podcast! And as a bonus, I've made a list of my blog posts about some of the topics I chatted about with hosts Suzy Wrong and Nate Edmondson, and photographer Clare Hawley. Check it out when you've got a moment...!

22.01.2022 It's been a busy month, to the point where I've only had time to write about ONCE the Musical just as it's about to wrap up its sold-out seasons at Darlinghurst Theatre Company and Merrigong Theatre Co. Here's a bit about our process for creating the poster images for the show - and a few extra production images as well, of course!

22.01.2022 Looks like the new programme for this year's Bondi Feast has just been released - once again featuring some typically quiet, understated images we came up with a little while ago...! Thanks to Phil Spencer & Rachel Chant who run the festival, Tyler Ray Hawkins for the styling & concepts for this shoot, and designer Samantha Alexander for the collage work, and of course our very patient models Joel, Emma and Ruvani!

21.01.2022 These portraits with the cast of Small Mouth Sounds for Darlinghurst Theatre Company are some of my favourite recent images - so Im glad to see them coming out in the lead up to opening night of this show...!

20.01.2022 Tim Draxl & Angelique Cassimatis in rehearsal for A Chorus Line, coming to Darlinghurst Theatre Company 13 March - 19 April 2020. Bookings: https://www.darlinghursttheatre.com/whats-on/a-chorus-line

20.01.2022 Its true - I spent Good Friday locked inside a pub, shooting zombies...

20.01.2022 Poster image for Small Mouth Sounds by Bess Wohl, coming soon to @Darlinghurst Darlinghurst Theatre Company.

20.01.2022 It's been nice to get back to working in theatre this past couple of weeks--even if it's the lobby! Darlinghurst Theatre Company have created a great cabaret space, and the amazing Reuben Kaye did two stunning shows last Saturday night. Glad I could be there!

20.01.2022 An image from last week for Darlinghurst Theatre Company's next production, Small Mouth Sounds by Bess Wohl. I was back in the rehearsal room this morning, too - lots more to come!

19.01.2022 A recent image for Ensemble Theatre of playwright David Williamson, before the premiere of Crunch Time - his final script before retirement...!

19.01.2022 Jake Speer as Frank Abagnale Jr. in Catch Me If you Can - The Musical at the Hayes Theatre Co, directed by Cameron Mitchell - the whole season is already sold out, but keep an eye on their Facebook page for any ticket returns or releases...!

19.01.2022 The amazing Geraldine Hakewill in The Rise and Fall of Little Voice for Darlinghurst Theatre Company - at the Eternity Playhouse until 24 Feb.

19.01.2022 Some recent work with Ensemble Theatre, in rehearsal for David Williamson's Crunch Time...

19.01.2022 Always a good day to hang photos! Just added a few favourite highlights from recent years to our hallway...that's: --Chloe Bayliss in Home Invasion, and Geraldine Hakewill in The Rise & Fall of Little Voice (L); --Ben Gerrard in Angels In America, and the cast of There Will Be A Climax (C); and --Janine Watson in The Happy Prince, and Tami Neilson at the Basement (R).

18.01.2022 The Rise and Fall of Little Voice is the first part of my collaboration with the lovely folks at Darlinghurst Theatre Company this year - and I couldn't be happier with how it's going so far...!

17.01.2022 Everyone was so enthusiastic about the photos I put up in the hall, I decided to add a couple of new favourite ones at my desk, too. Sohere’s Angelique Cassimatis in A Chorus Line at Darlinghurst Theatre Company, and Joseph Althouse, Tim Wardell and Ashley Lyons in the amazing Apocalypse production of Angels in America...and since they’re a little hard to see, I’ll post the photos as well!

17.01.2022 Publicity image for Angels In America Pt. I & II by Tony Kushner by Apocalypse Theatre Company & Red Line Productions at the Old Fitz Theatre - read more about this production on my blog, here: https://www.robertcatto.com//photographing-the-arts-on-wor

16.01.2022 Some recent work with Darlinghurst Theatre Company on the upcoming production of Small Mouth Sounds by Bess Wohl - the rehearsal room is always a great place to be!

16.01.2022 A tight focussed profile (sorry, little lighting joke there) of the work Peter Rubie Lighting Design did on A Chorus Line for Darlinghurst Theatre Company earlier in the year, with a selection of my images from the dress rehearsal that haven't been seen elsewhere - hopefully more people will get a chance to see it, someday soon!

16.01.2022 It's a funny thing about working in theatre, both in lighting design and photography: sometimes, the better you get at it, the less visible you are...! Read more about this, and my work on Darlinghurst Theatre Company & Moogahlin Performing Arts' recent production of Rainbow's End, below.

15.01.2022 I rarely shoot video; but, when I do, I insist it's handheld, shaky, probably crooked, done on someone else's iPhone, and completely impromptu--with no rehearsal at all. As seen here... For once, I don't seem to have covered the microphone with my finger; and even more fortunately for me, the stunningly talented Taryn Fiebig and Scott Davie's performances means you (hopefully!) don't really pay attention to all the stuff I could have done better. Enjoy!

14.01.2022 Coming soon, to a PBS station near you! (If you’re in or near the US.) Loved photographing this joyful Lea Salonga show with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra last year, I can’t wait to see the on-screen version...

14.01.2022 From the rehearsal room for I'm With Her, which starts this weekend at Darlinghurst Theatre Company - it was already intense and amazing at one of their first run-throughs last week, I can only imagine what this will be like on stage...

13.01.2022 Nice to be back in the rehearsal room with Pinchgut Opera this past week - and this sounds even better than it looks...! Farnace starts 4 December, at City Recital Hall in Angel Place.

13.01.2022 Really great to be working with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra yesterday on these Casino Royale-themed images - featuring these gorgeous Aston Martins, courtesy of the Sydney dealership, who couldnt have been more delightful and helpful. Plus, Alexander & Amanda are total stars!

13.01.2022 I'm not sure if I've posted here before about my personal project researching Rupert Julian, the Kiwi director of the 1925 Phantom of the Opera silent film; but, I managed to get my hands on a ~100-year-old book about him this week that I'm a little bit excited about. You can find out more about it, over on the Kage Collective site...!

11.01.2022 I don't do nearly enough behind-the-scenes images on my photo shoots, but once in a while, there's an entire video. (I know - it's not ACTUALLY about me; but, there's lots of me in it...) From my recent work with Darlinghurst Theatre Company for Small Mouth Sounds by Bess Wohl, and thanks to Yure Covich who shot this...!

11.01.2022 Because I'm basically a nerd, I got a new iPhone, then I wrote a nerdy thing about it. For your nerdy research / enjoyment, here's a first look at the camera(s) in the iPhone 11 Pro...

11.01.2022 New on my blog: what tools do I use to reinforce design decisions with production photography? I look at a few examples in Small Mouth Sounds at Darlinghurst Theatre Company - check it out when you have a moment...!

09.01.2022 Dance, ten; looks, ELEVEN. This team have worked unbelievably hard on this - glad I could be back in Sydney for it! Production image for A Chorus Line at Darlinghurst Theatre Company, directed by Amy Campbell. More info & tickets here: https://www.darlinghursttheatre.com//whats-on/a-chorus-line

08.01.2022 New on my blog: working with strobes, shadows and saturation (and the undead) at Alice in Slasherland, at the Old Fitz Theatre. Oh, and puppets - I forgot puppets. Check it out...! https://www.robertcatto.com//photographing-the-arts-on-sha

07.01.2022 A few images from Tina Arena's concert during the opening week of shows at Sydney Coliseum Theatre just before Christmas. (Meant to post them sooner, but the holidays caught up with me!)

05.01.2022 My latest photo essay just went live at the Kage Collective site - see more here: https://www.kagecollective.com/kage-sto//vegetable-mineral

05.01.2022 I've been working with Sydney Coliseum Theatre this week on their grand opening, here's one image from last night with Michael Cassel Group and Tina Arena - still a few tickets available for her show tonight!

04.01.2022 Nice to see this rehearsal image I took for Sydney Symphony Orchestra a little while ago getting some extra life as part of this campaign put together by Leading Hand - looks great, Jamie!

04.01.2022 One week!? That's, like, only a few days! Can't wait to see (and photograph) the dress rehearsal of this one, it's going to be great...

04.01.2022 Stefanie Caccamo and Toby Francis in Once at Darlinghurst Theatre Company from 26 June - 21 July, and Merrigong Theatre Co from 24 - 28 July 2019.

03.01.2022 A short clip from Closing Night: Theatre Therapy, talking a little about the process of photographing a show, from the earliest promotional images right through to the dress rehearsal. Hear the rest of the episode, and read more, on my blog: https://www.robertcatto.com//photographing-the-arts-talkin

02.01.2022 New on my blog: looking back at the Apocalypse Theatre Company production of Doubt: A Parable (from 2017!), and how doing my best is a constantly moving, evolving target. Were always working within deadlines, spatial limitations, budget constraints, etc. - how do you let go and move on, and stop thinking about other ways you could have done something?
