24.01.2022 GOOD NEWS STORY #16 Majesty Oak Local artist and gardening enthusiast Robert Gower has been busy creating wonderful art during the restrictions. His latest proj...ect is the Majesty Oak. "This is a drawing I started some time ago, but having time out because of the Coronavirus was a good opportunity to get it finished," said Robert. The Majesty Oak is a truly majestic tree. It has been known to have been flourishing since at least 1554, and is in Fredville Park, Nonington, Kent." With a girth of 12.2m the Majesty Oak is the tallest English Oak in the UK. "Major branches have broken off it in the past, and the one depicted here has become embedded in the ground at one end and wedged against the tree trunk at the other.," said Robert. "Amazingly, it is still alive and is home to birds and bats."

09.01.2022 Theyve survived the dinosaurs, and theyre surviving this seasons bushfires. In fantastic news, the prehistoric Wollemi Pines have been confirmed as safe, tha...nks to a secret mission by NPWS firefighters working in partnership with the RFS. Wollemi National Park is the only place in the world where these trees are found in the wild and, with less than 200 left, a military-style operation was put in place to save them from one of the largest bushfires ever seen in NSW. The operation included large air tankers laying fire retardant to head off multiple fire fronts, and specialist NPWS firefighters being winched into the remote site from helicopters to set up an irrigation system in the gorge. In advance of the fire, NPWS firefighters were again winched into the site to operate the irrigation system and as the fires approached, helicopters water bucketed the fire edge to reduce its impact on the groves of trees. The operation was a success - while some trees have been charred, a detailed scientific assessment has confirmed the species is set to survive the bushfire season. The biggest threat to the Wollemi Pines remains illegal visitation and the risk of introducing disease. The location remains confidential and public access is not permitted. 03.01.2022 These stunning sketches of some special places in the Melbourne Gardens take around five hours to complete, but artist Andrew Gregg enjoys the process of choosi...ng a location based on how the plants fill different areas of the Gardens with their unique shapes, lines and textures Sometimes the study of just one tree offers a world of interest. If you create art inspired by the Gardens, wed love to see it!
