24.01.2022 Inserting a new Kitchen into this Fitzroy home was a delicate exercise- it was designed for a beautiful 1850s bluestone cottage The original floor and the bluestone walls were not touched -The kitchen services water, power, exhaust & waste water connect through one small insertion- Demolition waste was negligible, and the the old bluestone cottage respectfully kept intact

24.01.2022 A view of Elwood project from the side street, where it faced an ugly Telstra facility, the intention was to provide a series of textural forms to the public face whilst securing site and views for the inhabitants. #robertnicholandsons#melbournearchitects #australianarchitects#wedesigngreathomes #contemporarydesignedhouses#melbournarchitecture#architectureanddesign #innercityrenovation #cedarcladding #creativebrickwork

21.01.2022 Reinterpreting the rural vernacular - our project at Toolern Vale has started taking shape, and this is just the shed - wait til you see the house! #robertnicholandsons #melbournearchitects #australianarchitects #countryliving #designersheds #contemporaryliving #metalinarchitecture @ Toolern Vale, Victoria

21.01.2022 The richness of concrete is shown here at our Richmond project with polished concrete floors and the sandblasted concrete ceiling. The waffle slab was a leftover from a previous renovation but we love it especially with the exposed aggregate beautifully captured in this shot by @lillie_thompson #robertnicholandsons#melbournearchitects #australianarchitects#wedesigngreathomes #contemporarydesignedhouses#melbournarchitecture#architectureanddesign

21.01.2022 Roof terrace at Oxford Street project is getting a workout in this weather - such valuable spaces created all with in the existing roof. #robertnicholandsons#melbournearchitects #australianarchitects#wedesigngreathomes #contemporarydesignedhouses#melbournarchitecture#architectureanddesign #roofterraces

21.01.2022 We love roof terraces, such a valuable asset created from normally ignored space and there are nearly always amazing views. Continually learning about best possible materials, what plants work well, layouts for efficient bbq prep area and experimenting with shading devices. 17.01.2022 Wellness has always been a passion at RN+S. Spaces that inspire great health is what we’d love to be creating more in #2021. To start the year, let’s talk about the role of timber and the magic it brings, with the help of some favourite designers from around the globe. Swipe through to enjoy the galleries we have curated! Wellness spaces are often tied to culture. Timber used in these spaces helps achieve an abstraction of modern and comfort of tradition like the master Keng...o Kuma’s from Japan. The warmth and softness of timber also introduce a slice of nature into indoor spaces, commercial or residential. It encourages an all-encompassing holistic approach to style comfort and functionality. There is so much more to share about our love for timber. We can’t wait to share more next month on how to create a mood, using timber in wellness spaces. Stay tune! 14.01.2022 Bell Street addition, nestled comfortably next to the original bluestone building - contrasting materials ensures that it doesn't overwhelm. #robertnicholandsons#melbournearchitects #australianarchitects#wedesigngreathomes #contemporarydesignedhouses#melbournarchitecture#architectureanddesign

13.01.2022 An early project, a contemporary terrace in Fitzroy with a typically compact rear yard, but we achieved a lovely spacious feel with a free flowing design and simple materials. Garden design is something that we enjoy immensely. #robertnicholandsons#melbournearchitects #australianarchitects#wedesigngreathomes #contemporarydesignedhouses#melbournarchitecture#architectureanddesign

12.01.2022 You can probably gather that we love wood, in all it's guises and try to incorporate it into as many projects as we can whether domestic or commercial. Here with the Alfred's Active Travel Zone we contrasted the heavy concrete car park setting with warm tones of plywood and Pacific Teak battens. from @sculptform_ #robertnicholandsons#melbournearchitects #australianarchitects#wedesigngreathomes... #contemporarydesignedhouses#melbournarchitecture#architectureanddesign#timberinarchitecture See more

12.01.2022 Our love affair with Sho Sugi Ban continues with the cladding going on at our Toolern Vale project, such a beautiful surface of contrasts and one that is so suited to our harsh climate. 11.01.2022 Let's start the year with a soothing image to counteract the horror of the what is happening in Aust right now - the tranquil bathroom with distant bush views at Oikos. 10.01.2022 Art and architecture, such an important mix and we try to show this in all our projects. Here the stair balustrade was made by sculptor @fredrickwhite5754 and shows how even simple elements of a house can be exciting. #robertnicholandsons#melbournearchitects #australianarchitects#wedesigngreathomes #contemporarydesignedhouses#melbournarchitecture#architectureanddesign

08.01.2022 How to deal with sunshading and overlooking in a single response, plus really ugly face brickwork - we used 400mm deep blades of steel as a pergola and windows shades, and rendered and painted out the brickwork. #robertnicholandsons#melbournearchitects #australianarchitects#wedesigngreathomes #contemporarydesignedhouses#melbournarchitecture#architectureanddesign

07.01.2022 Lovely shot by @lillie_thompson of Richmond Terrace, where we installed a new bluestone clad stair behind a textured painted wall. The existing front door opening had to remain but we redesigned it to allow for greater transparency. #robertnicholandsons#melbournearchitects #australianarchitects#wedesigngreathomes #contemporarydesignedhouses#melbournarchitecture#architectureanddesign #innermelbournehomes #renovatedterrace

07.01.2022 A strong focus for our work is to connect internal spaces to the exterior especially living zones, and this shot of our Elwood project shows the value of that. Slide back the doors and immediately the living area increases in size due to the easy flow from inside to out. #robertnicholandsons#melbournearchitects #australianarchitects#wedesigngreathomes #contemporarydesignedhouses#melbournarchitecture#architectureanddesign#outdoorliving

04.01.2022 So....happy house? or grumpy house?... a new project in Balwyn, very near completion..

02.01.2022 This month for our Wellness Inspo Feed, we are featuring timber, but in a darker, moody tone. If the space is well designed in both natural light and air ventilation, dark timber are the perfect mood setter to create cosiness and a statement, much like a fireplace! Darker timber has withstand the test of time & trend, proven to transcend styles while guarantee to breathes warmth and tactility into healthy spaces, ideal for wellness volume like spas, retreat, or fitness ...spaces. As demonstrated in photo 1 & 6, Remedy Place provides a space that encourages social interaction while integrating physical activities with the use of dark alluring timber. Proudly, we also considered the dimmed cosy timber (in photo 3) when designing the end of trip facilities for Alfred Health, where healthcare hero(in) start or end their work day after long hours of bright, fluorescent, clinical hospital spaces. Complimentary to any other materials, they are in our "no-brainer" moodboard library. Get excited for next month where we move to another natural raw material. Think luxury escape, and let the suspension build...! 01.01.2022 Kitchen design is something we constantly explore in both layout and materials. This very open plan kitchen in our Oxford Street project brings the dining function right into the space for a more casual style of living. Materials here are waxed plywood with drilled pattern, @dektonbycosentino benchtops and the beautiful tiles from @inax.official @inax.design @inaxjtw_official available from @artedomus #robertnicholandsons#melbournearchitects #australianarchitects#wedesigngreathomes #contemporarydesignedhouses#melbournarchitecture#architectureanddesign

01.01.2022 This Richmond project by Robert Nichol & sons is simply sleek and stunning. A complete rebuild of a 1980s Italianate terrace, the space now offers an abundance... of natural light grounded by elements of bluestone, dark oak, polished concrete and exposed steel beams. We couldnt think of a better place for the Bathyscafocus fireplace to be installed it fits the aesthetic to a tee!
