22.01.2022 Grenache is the Bomb! Its official grenache is the latest hit red grape variety everybody is talking about it and more importantly everybody is drinking it. Theres a real trend toward bright and chirpy reds a natural progression from rose and pinot noir. Robert Oatley has been working with grenache since 2013 with the GSM blend (which the family pioneered in their earlier Rosemount Estate days) and since 2017 have produced a 100% grenache Joven-style version that is ...really hitting the mark. The three vintages to date have collected an impressive three trophies, three gold, four silver, multiple Top 100 listings and numerous 90+ point scores from the critics. McLaren Vale (and the Barossa) are the natural home for grenache South Australia has the countrys largest plantings. While grenache itself goes by many monikers, it is nevertheless an easy-drinking red wine varietal with gentle tannin and balanced body. It also makes a versatile wine; able to be consumed as a single varietal style or blended with other grapes, such as shiraz and mourvedre. When enjoying grenache, its spice-scented flavour profile is this varietals most identifiable characteristic. Expect candied fruit, touches of cinnamon; aromas are raspberry, orange rind and even tobacco. We recommend enjoying ours lightly chilled ten minutes in an ice bucket, thirty minutes in the fridge or remove from the chiller thirty minutes prior to serving. 19.01.2022 Ken Gargett reviews our latest Chardonnay release: "From the Karridale and Wilyabrup districts of Margaret River, this delightful Chardonnay opens with lovely nutty notes reminiscent of grilled cashews. There is oak evident with the wine having spent 9 months in new French barriques, but it is integrating well. The palate is all peaches with a soft, creamy texture and very good balance plus a flick of underlying acidity. A quality Margaret River Chardonnay with a promising future. For me, 93, but that should climb in the coming years."

17.01.2022 Robert Oatley 2021 Vintage Images and Report The Oatley family are pleased to report that 2021 has proved to be a very satisfactory vintage, with highlights including outstanding cabernet sauvignon from Margaret River and Frankland River, and good crops across all varieties in McLaren Vale. Western Australia delivered a tricky season to navigate through with some major February rain in both Margaret River and Great Southern. For Margaret River it meant that harvest was earli...er, and we had to wait for the reds to dry out in warmer weather, prior to harvest. There were some high quality parcels including some sensational reds but it took some work to get them there. The Great Southern delivered higher than normal potential crops due to the rain and otherwise warm dry growing season. Riesling is soft and approachable, particularly floral. The reds are universally outstanding. Some rain in early May saw us scramble to get the last of the reds in but they were super ripe and full of flavour. A very strong vintage across all varieties. 2021 was sensational in McLaren Vale a good farmers and winemakers vintage. Very good crops of vibrant high quality fruit. Excellent rain in spring and early summer lead up to harvest meant the vines started off in a really good place. We’re very pleased with all the reds. Mudgee too fared well after a disastrous smoke-affected 2020.

13.01.2022 The Oatley family have added an old bush vine Grenache to their Finisterre range of fine Australian table wines. Hailing from a single block of 80 year old bush vine Grenache in Blewitt Springs, McLaren Vale, the grapes were hand harvested at ideal ripeness on March 20th 2019, the wine fermented on skins for 10-12 days, settled and then matured old large format oak for 10 months. Winemaker Larry Cherubino describes the wine succinctly: Perfumed red fruits. Distinctive musk n...otes. Vibrant, juicy and textured. Rounded, supple tannins. Robert Oatley Finisterre McLaren Vale Grenache 2019 is released Australia-wide this month and carries a RRP of $45. Just 480 six-packs were produced. 05.01.2022 The affinity between oak and Chardonnay is so great that oak flavours are often taken as a marker for the grape itself. Oak barrels provide both a textural and flavour element to chardonnay, which varies depending on whether the barrels are new or used, the forest from which the oak originates, and their size. New oak has the most dramatic influence. Over the past few decades, Australian chardonnays have seen more restrained use of oak, now providing a beautiful balancing influence to the grapes typically generous fruit flavours and bright acidity of cooler climate regions. This particular French hogshead hails from Nuit St George and held our Finisterre Margaret River Chardonnay.

04.01.2022 Robert Oatley 2020 Vintage Update The Oatley familys grape sourcing model of a diverse range of regions across the country has augured well for vintage 2020. Drought and fires combined to see the national grape harvest fall to its lowest level since 2013-14. Whilst ROVs production from Mudgee region will be substantially down (possibly nil) and South Australia at around 50%, Western Australia will pick up the ball with reasonable yields of very high quality. For the Robert... Oatley range, In the West, Margaret River and Great Southern delivered very good quality across the board after an unusually early harvest. Chardonnay, Riesling, Aromatic whites, Shiraz and Cabernet are the highlights. In South Australia, quality was good whilst quantity was substantially down. McLaren Vale Grenache and Barossa shiraz were standouts. We source a lot of fruit from McLaren Vale which was thankfully spared the fires, unlike the Adelaide Hills to the north-east. 2020 will go down as challenging to say the least says Director of Winemaking, Larry Cherubino however the silver lining is there will be some very smart wines. Look out for our shiraz from Great Southern, Barossa and McLaren Vale; Cabernet Sauvignon from the West and Margaret River Chardonnay there will be some stunners! See more
