25.01.2022 Fact: Grass fires can move three times as fast as a bush fire, they start easily and spread quickly. Grass fires will pose a risk in NSW this fire season so make sure you have a cleared area around your home. 24.01.2022 If there is a fire near Robertson, you will find its alert level on the NSW RFS website, on the radio and in the ‘Fires Near Me’ app. What will be your sign for putting your fire plan into action? #getreadyweekend

24.01.2022 You don’t have to live right near the bush to be at risk. Even if your home is a few streets back, you may be at risk. Can you guess the main reason homes are lost to bush fires? #getreadyweekend

23.01.2022 Thanks to the men’s shed! It really is a beautiful piece of work - we’ll post some photos in situ once it’s set up.

23.01.2022 Always a pleasure having neighboring brigades from different districts come in to the area. Thanks a lot for all your help Kangaroo Valley RFB!

23.01.2022 Fact: Your safest option is to leave early. A bush fire can be a terrifying situation, intense heat and flames will make you tire quickly, it will be difficult to see and breathe. You may become confused or disorientated. Powerlines and fallen trees can block... roads and make driving dangerous. It’s always better to leave early, before the fire arrives. Visit myfireplan. com.au and make a bush fire survival plan, it will help you make important decisions like when to leave or what you need to be prepared to stay. #getreadyweekend See more

21.01.2022 PLEASE NOTE: From today we are in the Bushfire Danger Period, and PERMITS ARE REQUIRED for any backyard burning, pile burns and agricultural burns. Your first step should be to read through the information on the linked page of the Wingecarribee Shire Council website to see if your property is eligible to conduct a burn, and if so, what the requirements are. That webpage also has information for BBQ's and recreational fires, which do not necessarily require a permit. Please... check carefully the requirements of conducting this type of fire. Lastly, please remember that it is your local volunteers who will be issuing permits, so don't expect an immediate turnaround. Plan ahead and give us plenty of notice so that we can organise a convenient time to assess your burn plans and issue your permit. Thankyou! https://www.wsc.nsw.gov.au//pollution-inf/backyard-burning

21.01.2022 Imagine: A lightning strike has started a fire that is rapidly developing near your home. The smoke is thick, the sky is getting darker. What is your plan for your pets? Have you thought about when and how (or even if) you will relocate them? Have you considered the safety of your livestock?... How will you transport your horses and where will you take them? And how does all of that fit within all the other things you need to do to survive, and save the things you think are irreplaceable, perhaps with half an hour's notice? If you leave those questions until a fire starts, it's too late. Talk and plan with your family, plan with your staff, be prepared. www.myfireplan.com.au

19.01.2022 Okay - new year - learn something new! This one had quite a bit of confusion around it during the last fire season, and when it comes up in conversation. What do you think this sign means?? Are there any near us?... We'll put up the final answer by the end of tomorrow (Saturday). If you get it correct you'll be the proud owner of a better informed bush fire survival plan.

19.01.2022 Well, we had some great plans for tonight! We were set to enjoy a small end of year bbq, where we would also present members involved in the last seasons major fires with their appreciation awards, however, mid rissole, our pagers were activated. Robertson, Burrawang, Avoca, Moss Vale, and Exeter RFS Brigades, along with some of our ever supportive group officers and chaplain (who’s always up to come and see what we’re up to and help out), responded to a rural shed fully involved in fire. While the shed was unfortunately destroyed, brigades contained the fire to that one structure and quickly had it cooled down. A great response from multiple brigades.

18.01.2022 The Little Burke River HR continues today and into tomorrow, with a great cooperative effort from NPWS, WaterNSW, RFS Southern Highlands and RFS Shoalhaven. Favorable weather conditions has seen this burn progress well.

14.01.2022 Planning on doing a burn this weekend? Ensure that you have all the necessary approvals in place, tell your neighbours and tell your local fire agency at leas...t 24 hours before you light up. Be mindful that there is some windy weather forecast over the weekend so be sure not to leave your burn unattended. You can notify us of your burn at www.rfs.nsw.gov.au/notify See more

12.01.2022 Enjoy those leftovers! We are pretty happy with how different the weather is from this time last year. But it's not the time to be complacent. Use the extra time you have over the next little while to review (or create!) your bush fire survival plan, to prepare an emergency kit, or to do some preparation work around your home. We'll give you some reminders over the next couple of weeks.

11.01.2022 Please be aware that the suspension on the issuing of fire permits will be lifted from Monday. Please plan ahead (especially considering your pile may currently be floating). You will need to contact us requesting us to visit your property and issue the permit, and then to notify your neighbours and the RFS of your intentions. At best this requires several days, and will often be longer depending on the demand and availability of our volunteers. Thanks for your understanding. Please check the council website mentioned in the notice below to ensure your pile meets the guidelines of what can and cannot be burnt.

10.01.2022 Fact: There will never be as many fire trucks as there are houses. Do not depend on a fire truck being available at your home. But if you and your home are well prepared, you stand a better chance of surviving a bush fire. There are simple things you can do around your... home to prepare it for a bush fire, like keeping the grass low and having a cleared area around your home. 08.01.2022 Many brigades have today held an open day for "get ready weekend". A reminder that for the last couple of years we've tried to make our 'open day' more accessible to you by holding it at the October Robertson Markets (this year on the 11th October). We've had a better response from this in the past and a lot more interest and questions, so that's why you didn't see us doing a traditional open day today. We'll keep posting hints and tips over the next couple of weeks, and encourage you to send through any questions you have if you can't find a good answer on the NSW Rural Fire Service facebook page or website (www.rfs.nsw.gov.au). See you at the markets in October!

06.01.2022 We hope you've been updating (or starting) your fire plan for the coming summer. This Sunday we will have a stall at the Robertson Markets and would love to answer any questions you may have. Please drop by and check what fire risks apply to your home.

05.01.2022 Congratulations to Sam and Terence - two more new members who completed their basic training assessment yesterday. It's been really encouraging to have so many new members joining us after last years fire season. Well done guys, welcome aboard! Also, huge thanks to the Wingecarribee assessors who have put in a mammoth effort over the last few months working through hundreds of new recruits before this next fire season starts, all in a Covid-safe altered program. Really appreciated.

04.01.2022 Lots of opportunities over the next couple of weeks to get information about the coming fire season and your preparedness. As we have the last two years, we will be at the Robertson Markets on Sunday the 11th October with lots of hints and tips, and a chance to ask your questions. Start preparing your home and family now and we hope to see you there.

03.01.2022 Fact: Bush fires are unpredictable and in dangerous conditions, you may not get an Emergency Alert message in time. It’s important that you stay up to date on conditions in your area and that you have made a bush fire survival plan.... Leaving early is your safest option. 02.01.2022 On today! We will be at the Robertson Markets to answer your questions and give you some resources. Hope to see you there at the School of Arts between 8:30 and 2pm.

01.01.2022 Second time lucky! Not all, but some members were able to make it back tonight for a second round of sausages, and to be presented with their Premiers Citations for the 2019-2020 bushfire emergency. While we certainly don’t do it for the free hats, it’s nice to be appreciated, and we are very grateful for the support of our local community, our other local RFS volunteers and staff, and the wider RFS organisation. Special thanks to Group Captain Aaron Deegan for coming ou...t to present the citations tonight. What a great WET summer we are having, but we’re still mindful of those that lost everything less than a year ago, especially family members mourning their loved ones.
