25.01.2022 If you are looking for an easy way to help children in hospital, head to Robina Town Centre this month and grab your $2 tokens which supports the work of the Gold Coast Hospital Foundation. You might be surprised by what each small donation can do.

24.01.2022 How do you visualise 1.5m? Right now we are deciding what to have for dinner, so food is on our mind, and we're going with seven kebabs.

24.01.2022 Jayde Ficarra’s nursing grad year holds a special place in the hearts of her family members. I am the first person in my family to go to university and do a degree. My mum and dad cried at my graduation. It was really emotional. It was a big deal, she said. Jayde worked her way up from being an assistant in nursing, to an enrolled nurse before heading to university to become a registered nurse. I did it all as a single mum, studying full-time and working full-time so I was... known as super-woman at one point. I wanted it so much. The hard work has paid off with an incredible grad year in the Medical Assessment Unit at Robina Hospital. I love what I do, Jayde said. I like MAU because it’s quite fast-paced and I like the fast-paced nursing style. I like the medical side of things anything that’s medically wrong with a patient they come to us, it’s quite interesting. The cases we see are so different, so it keeps my skills up to date that’s for sure. The patients come in, you see them, you have got to figure out if they are staying or going and it’s a very quick-thinking process so that process alone is a bit of a challenge. Identifying as Aboriginal, Jayde has also taken the opportunity to share her culture with her colleagues this year by organising a calendar of events including everything from colouring in and designing a boomerang, to quizzes about Indigenous health. A lot of the nurses have come and spoken to me one on one, and have been really interested and asked, ‘can you tell me more?’ which is quite nice,’ she said. Jayde is embracing more responsibility as a registered nurse but her motivation has remained the same as when she started out it's all about the patients. I try to build a really good relationship with patients and if they say something like ‘thank you so much Jayde, you really helped me today,’ it’s really what keeps you coming back. See more

23.01.2022 A Gold Coast couple have told 7NEWS Gold Coast how Speech Pathologists at Robina Hospital have changed their lives. Kent Druery was living a faced paced life managing shopping centres, training for triathlons and commentating at cycling events when he lost the ability to communicate. Kent and his wife Julia have shared how speech pathology has given Kent his voice back. "It's given me my husband back," Julia said. Kent now volunteers at Robina Hospital, giving hope to others.

22.01.2022 Diane Clayton has been volunteering at Robina Hospital for three and a half years and returned to the Palliative Care Ward last week for her first shift back. The volunteers were stood down in March due to COVID-19 but have been welcomed back with open arms by staff and patients. It was something a community care nurse said to Diane when her husband was dying at home that sparked her interest in volunteering initially. He came to my place to see my husband when he was in his... last stages. It was just a simple thing he said once, he said ‘I have sat you where you have sat, my brother has just recently died and I nursed him’. Of all of the things, it kind of resonated with me. And so when I had nothing else to do I came here to volunteer. Not that these people know that I have lost anyone. Just something as simple as being here and if I am doing the dishes and if I get a wife come in or a husband or a son and they are really teary Just that comfort it helps sometimes. And just having a laugh." Diane said after seeing many hospitals across the country, she was very proud of the ones we have on the Gold Coast. See more

22.01.2022 Before becoming a nurse ten years ago, Tarah worked in the health and fitness industry but it was a wine with a friend that led her to a change of career. I was having a wine with a girlfriend who was a nurse and she said ‘you know, you are so good at talking, you’d make a really good nurse. I’m going to enrol you in TAFE.’ Six weeks later I received a letter saying you’re enrolled. After moving to the Gold Coast seven years ago, Tarah worked surgical specialties at Gold... Coast University Hospital as an enrolled nurse. She then became a Registered Nurse and moved to the Robina Medical Assessment Unit. I like that it’s fast paced, that we never know what is going to come in through the doors. I like the quick turn-around, I like being able to help people at the beginning of their transition through the health service. It can be quite frightening for them so it’s making sure we give them the time that they need to understand where they are going, explaining what our ward is so they know they are not going to be with the us the whole time they are here. Tarah's gift of the gab has paid off for her. I was born to talk so being able to chat with our patients is the number one thing I love the most. Being able get to know them even for a short period time. And just being able to give someone the time that they need, even if it’s five minutes. To be able to give them a bit of a sense of relief and reassurance is very rewarding. See more

22.01.2022 Existing Gold Coast Health patients who regularly attend our hospitals for urgent treatment such as chemotherapy or renal dialysis can apply for an exemption to cross the border from New South Wales. In addition to your border pass, you will need to provide written confirmation that you are patient of Gold Coast Health receiving ongoing urgent specialist treatment. This can be organised by your treating team. If someone is driving you to this treatment, they will also need to apply for an exemption and can only drop you at the hospital before heading directly to one of the Govt quarantine hotels to wait for your treatment to finish. They cannot wait for you at the hospital or visit any other places in Queensland (including shops, service stations etc).

22.01.2022 40 staff will use their nifty needlework skills to make 300 'tooth teddies' using a crochet pattern customised by Robina Hospital Breast surgeon Associate Professor Rhea Liang (pictured). Our youngest Oral Health patients will bring the small teddy to their appointment to tuck messages of support, information and products in their pouches. The Oral Health Unit has taken amazing care of my children’s teeth for years, so it’s wonderful to give something back, Dr Liang said. #DentalHealthWeek2020

21.01.2022 There are services right across the Gold Coast to support new mother's with breastfeeding. This week 9 News Gold Coast featured how our lactation consultants can help with what can be a really challenging time for new mums.

21.01.2022 This week is Perinatal Anxiety and Depression Action Week. Did you know that perinatal mental illnesses like anxiety and depression are common and can be serious? One in five expecting or new mothers and one in ten expecting or new fathers will experience anxiety and/or depression, affecting around 100,000 families across Australia every year.

19.01.2022 Connie Mather was destined for a career nursing after seeing a baby being born while she was on work experience in Year 10 in her hometown of Moree. It was overwhelming, and I thought yes, this is what I want to do, she said. I went back to school and they said it would be another two years of school and then university. Teenage Connie wasn’t quite ready for that, so she embarked on a different path including a career as a payroll clerk. But she couldn’t avoid her cal...ling forever and went to university at the age of 35 to pursue nursing. For the past ten years, Connie has made sure nurses in the Acute Medical Unit at Robina Hospital are up to date with their education and ready to tackle anything through her roll as a clinical facilitator. I work with the nursing students who come on to the ward. I facilitate all of the staff keeping up with their mandatory education, booking them into workshops, anything that comes on to the ward that we haven’t looked after before, I facilitate getting the education, she said. Being a facilitator is more about the staff and making sure the staff are supported and educated." It’s a role that requires Connie to be a jack of all trades. People come to me if they are can’t find policies or procedures that they need, and I help find that, so I feel very needed. See more

18.01.2022 The border restrictions for people requiring essential medical care have been updated. Residents from the border zone can still travel freely within the zone. People from elsewhere in NSW can receive treatment with Gold Coast Health, when specialised health care cannot be provided in their local area. You will need written proof from your treating team at Gold Coast Health in addition to your Queensland Border Declaration Pass. You will be required to comply with strict qu...arantine requirements. This includes being escorted to/from your appointment/treatment by our staff, wearing a mask, hand sanitising and staying in the designated areas. You will not be permitted to visit any other area of the hospital (such as the food court) while you are here. If someone is driving you to your appointment, they will have to either return to NSW after they have dropped you off, stay parked in their car for the duration of your appointment or go to quarantine at a designated hotel at their own expense. After your appointment, you will be required to travel directly back to New South Wales without stopping elsewhere in Queensland. For more information please visit https://bit.ly/2BnpQuK See more

18.01.2022 Thanks for coming out to get COVID-19 tested. If you are visiting Fever Clinics at GCUH or Robina Health Precinct please don't leave it too late. We see our last patient at 9pm, so depending on how many people are waiting, we sometimes need to close off the queue earlier.

17.01.2022 Gold Coast Hospital Foundation's Scrub Up September 2020 campaign will kick off in a matter of weeks, and kids in hospital need your help now more than ever. One family has shared their journey after twin boys Louis and Theo were diagnosed with congenital nephrotic syndrome, spending much of their first year of life in hospital. 17.01.2022 Good news! The Gold Coast is no longer listed as 'Restricted Local Government Area' (RLGA) That means we've been able to ease visitor restrictions to our hospitals. As of now: up to two visitors can see a patient in hospital at any one time, for any length of time, within visiting hours. staff and visitors who don't live in a Restricted Local Government Area (RLGA) don't need to wear masks at our hospitals. people who do live in an RLGA will still need to put a mask... on upon entry. aged care facilities can accept visitors when they are ready to do so. The easing of restrictions comes after the Gold Coast was removed from Queensland's list of RLGAs. Gatherings of up to 30 people are also now allowed in homes and businesses. More details on the current visitor directions are here https://bit.ly/3c45rJ3. See more

17.01.2022 Gold Coast Heath audiologists announce the new Hearing Access Program which improves hearing services for inpatients. Gold Coast Health audiologist Simone Michael says it has made a real difference to patient communication and access to care in the health service. Patients with untreated hearing loss can be vulnerable to miscommunication and feel isolated, especially as an inpatient where they might be exposed to unfamiliar medical terminology and noisy environments, Simone said. The program provides ‘pocket talkers’- equipment consists of headphones, microphone and adjustable volume pack to help the communication process for hearing impaired. We’ve had excellent feedback from patients and nurses about their experience with the Hearing Access Program, Simone said.

17.01.2022 Registered nurse Nicole Stanton can truly appreciate the resources she has to work with at Robina Hospital. The Medical Assessment Unit nurse spent three weeks in Laos before starting with Gold Coast Health. That was a real eye-opener about third world countries and how they nurse and the challenges they face with no resources, she said. We saw birthing in the hills. We saw how mothers are by themselves, they don’t have any midwives and it’s just how they have done it for... years and years. It was challenging experience with the resources that we had. We were teaching children about basic hygiene like cleaning their teeth. Just dealing with the resources we had, to be able to get over those challenges and to work as a team with the student nurses, that was a great experience. Closer to home, Nicole has also been surprised as she has embarked on her nursing career in the Robina MAU. I had no idea what I was going in to. To find out about people and just the walks of life that I come across and everyone is at a different stage of their life. Just having that little snippet is just amazing and to have that little impact on someone in their day to day life. We see patients at all times of their lives and all situations and all challenges so to be that helping-hand and to be there for them when they are having bit of a crisis and need a bit help is amazing. 15.01.2022 Robina Hospital acute medical ward nurses Joy Neal, Janine Oxley and Eileen Kearns, have spent their careers caring for others. They have now experienced what what it's like to be a patient after being diagnosed with cancer. When I’m in the moment and I’m looking after my patient, that’s all that I’m thinking about. But it’s later on that it haunts you," Janine says. Even though I’m in remission I can’t imagine the day when cancer won’t be in the front of my mind. I feel l...ike it’s something that’s always going to be shadowing me. That’s why work is so good for me. It keeps my mind off focusing on that but also, who better to discuss your health with than other nurses? And especially Joy and Eileen who know exactly what I’m talking about." Joy has used her prognosis to the benefit of her patients. Having terminal cancer has made me a better nurse that I ever was before. I know exactly what it’s like to be a patient. I know how they feel lying in that bed. And I know that we give them the best possible care they could have." See more

14.01.2022 Beautiful Delta Therapy Dogs pup Kellea is back on the job providing support and care at Robina Hospital. Kellea visited the Palliative Care unit, much to the delight of nurses Erin and Isabelle. The five-year-old labradoodle also stopped by the Jasmine Unit for a visit. Mental health nurse Jonathan said the program was an important part of the care offered to people dealing with mental illness. "We became involved with the Delta Therapy Dog program in 2018 and have been blow...n away at the positive impact these four legged friends have on the ward. It doesn’t come as a surprise that animals have been proven to help with depression, anxiety and stress so to have them as part of our recovery program has become an important part of people’s care," he said. "What I love about dogs is that they love you without judgement and they’re always happy to be in your company. In these uncertain times it’s good to know you can always rely on the comfort of a wagging tail and furry smile to make your day." See more

Friendly screening staff, like Steve, will ask you stop upon entry, make sure you sanitise your hands and answer a few simple questions. It takes moments and will help ensure the safety of our patients, visitors and staff.

13.01.2022 There's more to hospitals than our incredible doctors and nurses. It takes many different roles to care for our community. Meet three staff who have very different roles but all contribute to important things to our health service. Lisa Jones from the Mortuary Interviewing Office exemplifies compassion in her role. Her colleagues have said; She exudes empathy with a coating of positivity and an energy that leaves everyone feeling positive."... Senior Advisor in Learning and Development, Kim Binstead’s leadership qualities, combined with her uplifting spirit helps empower others to achieve more. Kim is a true leader in every sense of the word. Her knowledge, kind heart and desire to support the positive development of all around her is inspirational." Creative Health Hub project coordinator Madeline Bridgland is described as a trailblazer who has dared to go where no other has gone before". Known for passionately breaking down the barriers between inside and out of the health service, Maddie has bridged the gap though her imaginative projects including the grand piano, art spaces and the Quarantunes Choir and more. All three were recently recognised for their work, winning a Chief Executive Value Award.

13.01.2022 Jane McNamara is the advanced recreational officer at Robina Hospital’s Palliative Care unit. Jane says she has the fun job because she gets to create moments and memories with patients, their families and friends. The biggest thing I love about working in palliative care is a very person-centred role that looks at not only the whole aspect of the patients, physically and spiritually, it takes into account families. I think that’s been one of the most rewarding things, to su...pport the whole family, friends and carers. A patient actually said to me last week ‘how can you work here?’ and I said, I can’t change your illness but I can help with your journey. It’s a privilege to work with you and I feel like I have made a difference. It can be sad but that’s not my role to come here and be sad. My role is to come here and bring happiness and moments and memories that matter. From organising weddings to surprise birthday parties and even scone therapy, Jane and the rest of the team in the unit continue to create special and lasting memories. Thank you Jane. See more

13.01.2022 R U OK? Day is a great reminder to look out for colleagues, friends and family all year round. Robina Hospital nurse Joshua Nelson says having his manager reach out to him and ask the question during a recent tough time made all of the difference. In the profession of nursing, burnout is prevalent because of the nature of the work and shift work. It’s as important as ever to ask everyone if they are okay and we do that in this ward. The Medical Assessment Unit nurse says t...he little things can play a big role in changing someone’s day particularly if they are having a tough time. Clinical Nurse Consultant Don Ibali used R U OK Day to reflect on the differences between Australian and his native Philippines where men don’t open up as much about their feelings and mental health. (Talking about it) can be a real release. I fell sick for about six months and couldn’t come to work. A wardie came to my place a few times to ask if I was okay, Don said. Nurse Bernard Kargbo-Reffell said having his manager ask if he was okay recently made him feel welcomed, supported and apart of the team. Don’t let September 10 be the only day of the year you reach out and ask R U Ok?. Not sure how to ask the question or what to do next? This could help: https://www.ruok.org.au/ See more

11.01.2022 While travel is off the cards at the moment, Robina’s Medical Assessment Unit has been on a culinary journey across the world celebrating the diverse cultures of its staff. Registered nurse Samantha Jo Maguire, who has Italian background, organised the feast in honour of Multicultural Month showcasing cuisines from a range of cultures. It’s a bit of a tradition in MAU, we take the opportunity to celebrate Multicultural Day because of the diverse backgrounds we have here. We... have nurses from the Philippines, England, Canada, Japan and China. Just because we have such an inclusive, multicultural and diverse environment, we just want to take the opportunity to make everyone feel like they belong just the same. The theme this year is We All Belong and I think that captures a really good snapshot of our ward. We do make everyone feel like a part of the team. Everyone is always keen to put their hand up and make this a fun environment to come into, I think it pays off for the patients as well. If we’re in a good high-spirited environment, they are going to benefit from that in a positive way. Sam’s contribution of cannoli paid homage to her Sicilian heritage. I have been on the phone to my Nonna many times over the past few days perfecting the custard, she said. And it was good opportunity for me to learn a new recipe and talk to my Nonna who lives in Melbourne. It does open up a communication and we get to learn about nursing in other countries and what that could be like. You learn more about people you wouldn’t know. I wouldn’t come out and say ‘I’m Italian’ so it’s nice to say this is my heritage and represent it in that way. See more

07.01.2022 Jane McNamara is a familiar face at Robina Hospital and recently shared the incredible work of the Palliative Care Unit with Ann Wason Moore - Journalist. Jane spoke about how focusing on the end stages of life has made her realise just how great even the smallest pleasures can be. 04.01.2022 We’re all relieved to leave hospital or have our loved ones discharged when they are well but do you know what it takes? Sharon Walshe is the discharge nurse in the Acute Medical Unit at Robina Hospital. She’s worked at Robina Hospital for the past seven years and enjoys her current role because it’s busy and challenging. It’s a role that requires lots of conversations with many different people to get the job done. I have to have meetings with all of the multi-disciplinar...y team meetings of a morning with all of the Allied Health staff; social workers, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, dieticians, speech pathologists, Sharon says. She is also responsible for liaising with doctors and pharmacists to ensure appropriate scripts are issued. Then there’s discharge summaries, phoning families, friends, nursing homes and facilitating how patients are going to get home. Sharon says it’s satisfying with working as a team with all different members of the health service to help patient discharges happen. Whether it’s a physio or the cleaner or the wardie taking the patients off the ward. We’ve all worked together as a team to get the job done. See more

02.01.2022 Margaret Watson has been nursing for 45 years spending the past 12 at Robina Hospital. Before joining the team at Robina Hospital, Margaret worked at the Gold Coast Hospital after being hired by then nursing director Amy Enderlin. While a great deal has changed in her career spanning more than four decades, Margaret’s care for her patients hasn’t changed at all. She said she still had a love of looking after people and caring for patients in her role as a nurse in the Spe...cial Medical Unit. And making their life better and improving their road to recovery, she said. And also working with some outstanding colleagues. We are like a family. Margaret became the patient three years ago when she underwent a hip replacement but returned to work stronger than ever. This Sunday she will celebrate her 70th birthday this Sunday. Happy birthday Margaret and congratulations on an incredible career in nursing. See more

01.01.2022 After a career in hairdressing, Laura Gibson says she fell into nursing but the seeds for her profession in health care were already planted. Laura started as an enrolled nurse in the Medical Assessment Unit at Robina Hospital in 2016 and at the same time started studying to become a registered nurse. All while she was raising daughter Harli as a single mum. I was pretty determined. It took a lot of organisation and a lot of support. It was definitely extremely difficult a...nd challenging at times, Laura said. I couldn’t have done it without the support of everybody I work with. I’d probably never thought of nursing. I was a hairdresser my entire working life and then I had Harli. With a young child, I thought how am I now going to cope and provide for her? And I really wanted to think about what I could do that would benefit both of us and something that might suit me as I am a people person. I fell into nursing by chance really but also I think it was a subconscious thing. I saw my dad go through and unfortunately pass away from cancer and I spent a lot of time in hospital with him. That was quite a pivotal time and I really admired the care. We were a desperate family and I had a lot of admiration for the nurses. I didn’t really know it at the time but it really resonated with me and it’s meant something to be that for other people." Laura finished her studies and is now a registered nurse. I can honestly say I get a lot of satisfaction. We might have such a challenging day. I always have peace at the end of it. I feel like I have found my place. It’s exceeded expectations because of the amount of personal achievements I have had in a few short years. It makes me know that it’s exactly where I am meant to be. I love what I do. See more
