25.01.2022 A new generation at Walsh Street Thea Boyd, Robin and Patricia's great-granddaughter at the planting of the replacement pine tree at Walsh Street / Boyd House II. Generously donated by John Patrick, theCanary Island Pine(Pinus canariensis) sapling replaces the 120 year old Pinus radiata that was removed earlier this year.... We also thank all our donors and partners with their support through our #TreeToRemember campaign including@_openwork@justmulchingtreeservices @rmit_la@themidcenturystoreand our #boydcircle members #historicpreservation#preservation#restoration#montereypine #canaryislandpine#greenscape #australiandesign#archilover#architreasure#architecturedesign#ausmodern#Australianmodern #australianmodernism#iconicarchitecture#iconichouse#melbournearchitecture#midcenturymodernhome #midcenturystyle#modernist_architecture#modernistbuilding#robinboydfoundation#robinboyd #treetoremember

25.01.2022 From little things, bit things grow. Earlier this year we had to remove the120 year old Monterey pine after an extensive life sheltering the Walsh Street house. This wonderful specimen, noted on the heritage statement, had reached the end of it's life. It was carefully removed and the milled timber is seasoning. Yesterday, a new tree was replanted in its place, a fine young Canary Island Pine(Pinus canariensis), selected by arboristJohn Patrick.... We'd hoped to have a ceremony to mark the significance, but the alas we had to get it in the ground before summer. Still at least we're able to record the event, justifying the use of the gold shovels. #historicpreservation#preservation#restoration#montereypine #canaryislandpine#greenscape #australiandesign#archilover#architreasure#architecturedesign#ausmodern#Australianmodern #australianmodernism#iconicarchitecture#iconichouse#melbournearchitecture#midcenturymodernhome#midcenturystyle#modernist_architecture#modernistbuilding#robinboydfoundation#robinboyd

23.01.2022 Smudges #1 Robin Boyd's intellectual and talent for critical writing emerged whilst he was a student. In 1937, all of 18, Boyd joined the editorial committee of the Victorian Architectural Students' Society editorial committee who produced an annual magazine titled "Lines". Boyd was later remembered by peers as a withdrawn, but witty, youth, whose literaryability was more apparent in theearly years of the course than hisdesign talents.... In 1939, all registered architects and student society members received.the first copy of a colourful newsletter titled"Smudges" in their mail. Boyd, with the encouragementof the V.A.S.S. Committee, launched this brash monthly, inwhich shattering criticisms of tworecent city buildings appeared."Smudges" had an immediate impact in the profession, because ofthe presumptuous manner in whichcallow students awarded a "Bouquetof the Month" for what was, in theirconsidered judgment, the bestbuilding completed during the monthand the "Blot of the Month" for theworst. The newly completed building to earn the first BLOT was the Australian Natives Association building in Elizabeth Street, with the green on purple native deco adornment attracting the ire of Boyd and his companions. I've cropped the image of the building today to avoid all the advertising hoardings and ground floor fast food joints that are a far greater blot than the original deco features. #designedinmelbourne#australiandesign#australiandesignhistoryheritage#nationaltrust#builtheritage#heritageaustralia#robinboyd#robinboydfoundation#Australianmodernism#australianarchitects#australiandesign#iconichouse#boydcircle#unimelb #unimelbarchitecture #melbournearchitecture

17.01.2022 Walsh Street / Boyd II house, South Yarra How wonderfully tidy we left the courtyard after our last volunteer working bee back between the lockdowns. You can imagine it's not so tidy following all this windy weather, but the new spring growth will be bright green and the hydrangeas and citrus flowering.... #architecture#design#archiphoto#archilover#architecturedaily#archdaily#robinboyd#robinboydfoundation#iconichouse#iconicarchitecture#midcentury#modernism#architour#architecturelovers#australiandesign#Australianmodernism#australianarchitects#ausmodern#boydcircle#melbournearchitecture

15.01.2022 These prints featured as back covers of the Students Society of the RVIA newsletters "Smudges" from 1939, edited by Robin Boyd. Unfortunately the artworks are unattributed. They seem to be linocuts. Deeper digging required. We've been busy downloading early issues of Smudges from the @unimelb archive. More fascinating Bouquets, Blots and tidbits to come...

08.01.2022 100 Objects - a Retrospective This time last year (yes just last year!), Walsh Street hosted a first of its kind exhibition titled 100 Objects: Australian Design in the Home Robin Boyd's iconic Walsh Street house provided a fitting stage to elevate and celebrate some of the most significant pieces of Australian design history. The whole house was activated in a 'design within a design' installation, with visitors free to roam and discover 100 iconic, delightful objects from o...ur past and today. The immersive exhibition featured a diversity of designed product from ubiquitous Kambrook powerboards, Nylex hose timers and Willow coolers, to Featherston furniture and contemporary lighting and homewares. Curated by Ian Wong @ispyid the exhibition also incorporated augmented reality and QR code technology that illuminated the stories behind the designs and the designers. More of Ian's collection of Australian design is currently featured in I-CONIC Australian Design @designtasmania. This is both a physical exhibition (for those lucky to be ensconced on the Apple Isle), and virtually at https://exhibitions.designtasmania.com.au/home

05.01.2022 In the tradition of our much loved and much missed friends @modernistaustralia , we bring you news of a significant country residence designed by Sir Roy Grounds at Table Top, near Albury, which is currently on the market. Grounds was Boyd's idol & later practice partner as Grounds, Romberg & Boyd (also known colloquially as Gromboyd) and students of architectural history will know more on their somewhat rocky relationship. For those who's work or post-work is now likely to r...emain predominantly to the manor bound, this rare and remarkable home, "Dunraven", has 5 bedrooms and is set upon 2 hectares with sweeping 360 degree views. Follow our tap.bio link to see the full listing and we highly recommend the #matterport tour. For further enquiries, contact the agents @PJMurphy_realestate of Albury.

02.01.2022 100 Objects - a Retrospective Part 2 Week 2 of the 100 Objects exhibition last October was a busy time at Walsh Street. With media attention and tremendous word-of-mouth promotion, we were inundated with requests for remaining tickets, so we added further sessions. As a first of its kind exhibition, it really exceeded our expectations....
