24.01.2022 "Wave Goodbye". The crash of the Mauritius Connie. Okay, still don't really love this. Tightened up considerably since last time. It is starting to look a bit more realistic at least.
23.01.2022 Good news or bad news. I did say these were the last two Qantas Connies I was going to paint for a while. However, I just picked up the last mint condition Airfix Qantas Connie anywhere. I can't shell out for that and not use all that reference material ;)
22.01.2022 Now for a change. Just need a few days away from the Connies. So... basically fleshed out this painting since this morning. The basic shapes and tones are in. I won't start the Fairy Wren until I'm well and truly into the painting. Oh yeah, the grass will be green. Just wanted to get the ball rolling.
21.01.2022 "Wave Goodbye". Reasonably happy with my fourth Connie painting and probably my last for a while. Drawing is on the canvas and I can start laying down the paint this arvo. There is very little available by the way of reference material, so I used a model to help with parts of the drawing. The photo doesn't show it yet but in original photos of the crash scene you can see a stand out mountain in the background which will be added in shortly. I'm taking as much care as I can to get this right and historically accurate. The painting has its challenges insomuch that it was late afternoon when the crash happened. Also the wet runway which offers up its own problems will add some historical accuracy.
21.01.2022 The Fairy wren is coming along quite well. The grass has four layers to it now and will probably still get a few more. Normally I don't paint with a border on the main canvas. However, I thought I might paint on some matting with the bevelled edge you get when framing prints. ... I have done it once before and the affect is quite cool.
20.01.2022 "Qantas Empire Airways Connie over the Territory". Completed 61 x 41 oil on panel.
19.01.2022 YES. Another Connie. This time a Qantas Connie overhead West Keeling island. Very rough because I'm not sure if i should rotate the island slightly. Needs atmospheric perspective which would help big time i think.
17.01.2022 Connie number 2 is starting to come together. Decided to do it flying over the Territory. The aircraft isn't finished but just needs refinements. The Qantas Empire Airways logo will probably go on tonight. I've painted thousands of trees that many will need touching up as well as shadows. Not happy at all with the sky either :( so more work there.
14.01.2022 "Wave Goodbye". Those of you who noticed my last post will see that this isn't the same as the original. The fact is, I started painting the other canvas and then thought to myself that the painting may be more engaging with a different angle. This doesn't mean I won't complete the other one but.... When I realised I wanted more in the painting, I spent most of the night making a new canvas and putting the new drawing on. I spent most of yesterday getting it to where it i...s now. The base painting is rough because I don't know how dark to make it. Southern Wave ran off the end of the runway at dusk, so I'm working my way as always to an end result with trial and error. The foreground will have reflections of Wave. They're not in yet hence a fairly bland canvas.
13.01.2022 Some progress on my Qantas Connie Overhead West Keeling Island. Paint on the whole canvas now. Moved the island slightly and adjusted the shape as well. Added some reef and breaks and of course about 100,000 trees. About at the halfway mark here. Everything is roughly in place but the canvas needs a fair bit of reworking.
12.01.2022 Qantas Connie over the outback NT is coming along. Got a lot done including shadows under trees. Fair bit of detail to go on now.
10.01.2022 "Wave Goodbye". Canvas covered with a very thin undercoat and looks as rough as guts. I have sanded it back getting ready to do the next layer. I think the sky is too dark. I watched last night as we approached dusk. It's amazing how much light there really is until it disappears suddenly.
09.01.2022 Grass Parrots, undercoat complete.
08.01.2022 Something out of the blue. Working on this DC3. Probably make it VH-EAP in the Qantas livery of the day.
05.01.2022 Doing a trio of grass parrots as well as a fairy wren a the moment.
05.01.2022 "Urban Visitor" Fairy wren seen in my back yard. Nearly complete the false matt border went on this morning. Just a few touch ups and a little more grass required. Finish the wren and the frame can go on.
04.01.2022 Painted in all the grass last night and will tint it today if it dries in time. I'll do at least another two coats of grass. The grass parrot painting below is no more. Got sanded over in preparation for a new work. The parrots weren't going anywhere so no point pushing it.
