07.05.2022 Nutrition facts: Carbohydrates Contrary to what you may have heard, carbohydrates are not the enemy! There are three main types of carbohydrates: sugars, starches and fibre.... Carbohydrates are broken down by the body into simple sugars, which are used by your body's cells for energy. Our bodies need carbohydrates to function. The brain uses simple sugars as its primary energy source. Carb-rich foods we love (besides bread) include: oats, sweet potatoes, bananas and chickpeas. #physio #physiotherapy #physiotherapist #carbohydrates #nutritionfact

14.03.2022 Anatomy fact: Thoracic spine The thoracic spine has 12 back bones that run from your neck down to your lower back. It supports the back, provides movement and provides attachment points for our protective rib cage. A twisting lunge is a great way to stretch your thoracic spine and increase its mobility.... - Get into a lunge position with your right leg in front - Place your left hand on the floor on the outside of your right leg. - Twist your torso and raise your right arm towards the sky - Repeat on the opposite side. #physio #physiotherapy #physiotherapist #thoracicspine #twistinglunge

08.03.2022 Nutrition fact: Protein Our bodies need protein to work properly! Our cells use protein to grow, repair and function. Protein is made of amino acids. Our bodies can only make 11 out of the 20 amino acids it requires to function. The remaining 9 are known as 'essential amino acids' that we need to get from the food that we eat.... Sources of protein that contain essential amino acids include: Animal products, soy products, quinoa and a vegetable called amaranth. Plant proteins don't have all amino acids, therefore if you're following a vegetarian or vegan diet, you should eat a wide variety of foods that contain protein so that you get the right mix of essential amino acids. #physio #physiotherapy #physiotherapist #protein #nutritionfact

27.02.2022 Word of the month is 'talus' The talus bone is part of your ankle. It's the primary connection between the lower leg and foot. It's part of a group of bones called the tarsus. 18.02.2022 Achilles tendinopathy? You may need this exercise! Eccentric calf raises (or drops) are a great exercise that help to strengthen the calf muscle and prevent achilles tendon injuries. Everyone can benefit from giving these a go, especially those who run or jump in sport and everyday life. - Start standing on the edge of a step or stair, with your heels slightly off the edge.... - Raise up to the balls of your feet and lift your heels high. - Slowly lower your feet so you heel goes below the edge of the step. - Repeat 10 times for 2 sets. Hot tip - if you want to increase the intensity, try one leg at a time - you will really feel the burn!

03.02.2022 ACL Sprain? We can help! The ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) is one of the four knee ligaments that help stabilise the knee joint. Often a sprain occurs when pivoting or landing from a jump so we see this injury a lot in non-contact (and contact) sport. When the knee is overextended, the ligament sprains and causes pain, swelling and loss of range of motion. Once we determine the severity of the sprain we can help get rehab started. We may recommend a brace to stabilise... the area and incorporate specific exercises to help reduce pain, restore range of motion and strengthen the area. Each rehab program will be specifically designed for you to help get you back on the court, field or track ASAP! #physio #physiotherapy #physiotherapist #wecanhelp #ACL #ACLsprain

18.01.2022 This month's word of the month is Duodenum. The duodenum is the first part food enters after leaving the stomach. It is part of the small intestine and is shaped like a 'C'. It houses a tiny hole in its wall whereby digestive juices from the gallbladder and pancreas enter the intestine to mix with and break down food. Lovely! #physiotherapy #physio #wordofthemonth #duodenum #smallintestine

16.01.2022 How can we help golfer's elbow? Did you know 90% of cases are not related to sport? Golfer's elbow occurs from repetitive and forceful actions like throwing, twisting or lifting. When there is overuse, improper technique or lack of strength in the forearm, the tendons in the elbow become inflamed and painful. The pain typically presents on the bony point on the inside of the elbow.... We can help by using gentle soft tissue massage and prescribing stretches and exercises for the forearm to strengthen the muscles and prevent reoccurrence. We can also help to review your throwing, twisting or lifting technique and advise any modifications necessary. Don't put up with elbow pain, get in touch to see on of our experienced physios. #physio #physiotherapist #physiotherapy #golferselbow #elbowpain #howcanwehelp

10.01.2022 Anatomy fact: cervical spine (c-spine) The cervical spine is made up of seven bones, the C1 to C7 vertebrae. They are separated by discs that allow the spine to move and absorb shock during activity. Try adding a neck stretch into your daily routine to maintain a healthy spine:... - Lower your ear to your shoulder and hold for 20 seconds (repeat on the other side) - Rotate your chin towards one shoulder and hold for 20 seconds (repeat on the other side). #physio @physiotherapy #physiotherapist #anatomyfact #cervicalspine #spine #vertebrae #stretch

05.01.2022 Nutrition fact: Fats we all need fat in our diets! They give us our source of essential fatty acids and help us absorb A, D and E vitamins. The main types of fats are saturated and unsaturated. Although we need a bit of both, it's important to be aware of your saturated fat intake as too much can increase the 'bad' cholesterol in our bodies. Why not try swapping a red meat dinner to a fish dinner once per week? #physio #physiotherapy #physiotherapist #nutrition #fats #unsaturated #saturated

02.01.2022 Let's face it, 2020 has been pretty rubbish for many of us. Whilst some people have used lockdown as a time to increase their fitness, for others it has meant being shut up inside the house working away at a makeshift desk. And now the body is feeling it! 2021 is just around the corner. Now is a great time to set yourself a fitness goal. What's yours? #physiotherapy #physio #fitness #getfit
