There are lots of options to protect your dogs and cats against ticks, our staff can help you choose the best for your pet. During the height of tick season (August - April) it’s also important to perform regular tick searches on your pet, making sure to check in hard to find places! 22.01.2022 Is it time for a purr-dicure? Older cats often have problems with their nails growing quite long and thick, which can put them at risk of their nails curling around into their paws pads (ouch! ). Regular nail trims at home or at the clinic can prevent them from growing too long. A little tip for clipping at home with a wiggly kitty is to have something tasty like vegemite or peanut butter for them to lick while youre clipping!

14.01.2022 During summer, we see the return of the Storm Season. Unfortunately, we often see many dogs suffering from storm phobia. We’ve put together some information on how to recognise storm phobia, and how to help your pet feel more at ease this summer. Why do storms scare our four-legged friends? NOISE: the terrible rumblings that vibrate through the ground/house/windows and heavy rain/hail.... VISUAL: the dark storm clouds gathering and starting to move quickly TACTILE: the wind and rain though their fur. OLFACTORY: the characteristic smell of a storm. Signs that our dog is anxious in a storm are: hyperventilation (excessive panting), hyperkinesia very agitated cannot stand still, continual movement, trembling, pupil dilation, vocalising, and escaping. Remember, it’s important not to punish your pet when they are scared, as this will only make the problem worse. It is also important not to ‘over coddle’ them as they learn that their anxious behaviour is the right way to react in a storm. So how can we help? Always try to be prepared by keeping up to date using websites such as Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) to help you predict when a storm is likely. Dogs want to hide to calm themselves when they are scared. It is important that they have somewhere quiet where they feel safe so they can stay calm and are then less likely to escape. A crate with a sound proofing around it is a good place to start, (especially good for small dogs). Often a small, well-insulated room such as the laundry is ideal for this, with rubber matting to place over the windows in time of storms. A table can even be covered with a thick blanket to create a small safe space. Over the counter products such as Adaptil pheromone, Zylkene, and Thunder Shirts can be used to help calm pets. In some cases, a consultation with our vets to discuss medication may be required. To find an option for you and your pet, talk to our friendly nursing staff on 3341 3399.

12.01.2022 Brrrrrrrrrrrr, has the colder season come early? I feel the cold more easily now and I need some extra warmth. As your dog gets older, they begin to feel the cold a lot more. Its not as easy for them to regulate their body temperature. The energy your dog will use trying to stay warm on a colder day will make him more predisposed to other diseases. Helping keep your dogs body temperature up will help minimize joint and muscle stiffness and help ward off other disease...s as well. If your Doggo spends time outdoors during the colder months they will likely need a coat to help keep her warm, a nice Cozy bed and more time indoors. Closely monitor your dogs environmental temperature and watch for signs of your dog being cold such as shivering or shaking, whining, signs of anxiousness, seeking places to shelter, hunched posture with tucked tail or lifting one paw off the ground are all signs of discomfort. Make sure you dry your Doggo down if wet, provide a jacket or a sweater, a nice cozy warm bed and plenty of indoor time beside the fire or the heater.

06.01.2022 Arthritis is a condition that effects approximately 1 in 5 of our senior pets, and causes painful inflammation in joints. We often see these conditions worsen during cold weather over the winter months. Fortunately, there are supplements available that can help provide relief to your pet. If you think your pet would benefit from a joint supplement, give us a call on 3341 3399 to talk to our friendly staff.

05.01.2022 My skin is dry and thinner my coat has become coarse and it takes longer to come out when the season changes. And my nails dont wear down like they use to! Theyre preventing me from balancing properly and they get in my way when we go walking. I need a little extra care with grooming these days! Older Dogs experience skin, coat and nail changes, and its important that we give our best friend a helping hand with more regular GROOMING. Your older dog might not be as ...likely or able to groom like he used to. Its important to increase how many times a week you brush out your dogs coat and help him stay clean and feeling great with recommended shampoos and conditioning treatments. Grooming, scratching and massaging is a great routine to get into. Not only will you be more likely to notice any bumps, lumps or strange changes, its also a wonderful bonding opportunity. Because your dog is less active your dogs nails will not file down of their own accord like they use to and may become more brittle. More frequent nail trimming is required to ensure they are balancing their weight equally on each limb. If youre not comfortable trimming your Doggos nails make an appointment and bring your dog in for a regular pedicure. If you need advice on skin and coat changes give us a call to discuss options for skin and coat health.

03.01.2022 Border restrictions apparently dont apply to hitchhiking frogs! This cool fellow was found blending in with some lettuce that had come all the way from Melbourne! We wish him a very hoppy life!
