24.01.2022 The ROC Committee is pleased to announce that Daniel Rae and Gordon Costello are joint winners of our G & S Lyric competition! Both entries were very entertaining and extremely clever. The Committee was faced with a difficult decision and as a result decided that they should share first place!... Daniel’s song, There is a Virus is a parody of There lived a King from The Gondoliers and Gordon’s, The G & S fan’s lament uses If you want a receipt from Patience on which to base his reimagined lyric. In addition to sharing the small prize on offer, their songs will be performed at an upcoming ROC concert/cabaret, which we very much hope will be some time in 2021. Congratulations Daniel and Gordon!

24.01.2022 Congratulations to Kerry Sebio, Rose Sapuppo, Frances Dick and Lucy Fasanello who correctly named our last 5 productions and have won a double pass to see the new Australian film 'Never Too Late'!

19.01.2022 TL/DR: we need your support! COVID-19 has hit the Arts Community Theatre hard. In particular, there is no relief in sight for musical theatre, because as yet, there are no clear guidelines for rehearsing and performing in a safe way.... In addition financially viable productions will be impossible until restrictions on audience numbers are relaxed and the community is confident about returning to theatres. Rockdale Opera had hoped for a modest production on our scheduled November dates, but this is looking less and less likely now. With no income for the foreseeable future, but with annual fixed overheads still to be paid, we appeal to you, our loyal audience, to help keep us afloat during this difficult time Any contribution, no matter how small, will be greatly appreciated. Unfortunately, as we are not a registered charity, donations are not tax deductible. We sincerely thank you for your support and understanding and very much look forward to being able to share more positive news with you in the near future.

14.01.2022 As many of you know, the arts and entertainment industry was one of the first sectors to be impacted by the current pandemic. There are concerns around the support that is available for those who were impacted, especially freelancers and contractors in this sector. The following petition was shared by Luise Napier, our director of Bartered Bride in 2016. If you feel strongly about the situation of support for these persons - please feel free to sign and share

08.01.2022 Rockdale Opera Company has received the sad news that Gladys Mettam, wife of the late Colin Mettam, recently passed away. She was 93. Gladys and Colin came to ROC in 1958 and were stalwarts of the Company until their retirement in 2010. Gladys came with a background in costume making from her years as tailor at the Australian Elizabethan Theatre Trust Opera Company, forerunner of the Australian Opera Company.... She was a ROC chorus member for 12 years from 1959-1971 and then for many years after that was ROC’s resident program seller, greeting patrons in the foyer with her black velvet money bag over her arm. She also continued to provide sets of costumes for the company. Many of our male choristers have appeared on stage in one of Gladys’ white ruffled shirts! Her funeral will be held at 10am on 19th August at Parsons Wollongong and details of the online service will appear in Saturday’s Illawarra Mercury

03.01.2022 Dear ROC members and friends, With complicated guidelines coming thick and fast from such organisations as Council, the Association of Community Theatre, Gondwana Choirs and St George Liquor Accord, it would seem that rehearsing and performance are still a long, long way off. With that in mind, we would like to still like to keep in touch and are holding a ROC Trivia Zoom on Friday the 21st of August! ... A couple of generous prizes are on offer - a bottle of bubbly and an item as yet undetermined from ROC’s fabulous Archival Storage Facility at Kingsgrove! An absolute Aladdin’s Cave of unimaginable treasures!! Would love to virtually see you there - please click interested/attending to receive the updates
