02.01.2022 - Taken far too soon The Flames Family are devastated to hear of the passing of Jordan Van Dijk, whose life was tragically taken this week. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Jordan’s Family & Friends at this devastating time When I hear his name, you can't help but see a smile of a young man who just enjoyed life and did everything with a passion that was hard to match. Long before I got the privilege of coaching him, Jordan had already made an impressio...n on me and many others around the club for the level in which he played, and yet how polite and courteous he was on and off the court. For those he didn't know, he may have come across as shy or quiet but if the kid knew you, in my case even long after I had finished coaching him, he would go out of his way to say hello and genuinely see how you were doing - such was his caring and loveable nature. I had the absolute pleasure and privilege of coaching Jordan in both of his seasons in Under 18s. As a player he was an absolute workhorse, who was extremely comfortable being the no name kid who just worked his butt off at both ends of the floor according to many opposition coaches, but in team scrimmages he would always be one of the first players selected - such was the high regard he was held in by teammates and coaches alike. He was always up for a laugh or a practical joke, but the most admirable trait of Jordan's was when it was time to be serious and do work, few had the drive and aggression that he showed on court - whether it be at training or in a game proper. It was that work ethic which pushed teammates to try harder - His presence made others want to be better, whether he knew it or not, it was his greatest skill of all. In the days since learning about his tragic death, I have reached out to several former teammates of Jordan and the theme was a common one on how much he had touched all of our lives in his own unique way - He was a mate's mate, someone everyone loved being around and not one person could or would say a bad word about. He was one of those young men you would hope your own kids would turn out to be like when they got to his age, and his loss will be felt by many whether it be his smile lighting up a Basketball court, or if it was just seeing you out in public at a pub, shopping centre or other surrounding where he would go out of his way to brighten your day. JVD - Buddy your death has made me despise this year even more so than I already did (Which for anyone who knows me well enough - is quite a lot!). But on behalf of those who had the pleasure of coaching or playing with you, or just knowing you from seeing your bright smile down at Mike Barnett many a time, may you now rest easy and bless those in heaven with your infectious nature and ability to brighten up any room or social setting you were in. Rest In Peace young man, you will be sorely missed by so many of your #FlamesFamily -
