25.01.2022 Our fist batch at Wonga Plains, well and truly cooking!!

25.01.2022 An additional fact sheet on organic carbon pools which is well worth a read. For those interested, the carbon to nitrogen ratio of our compost is 11:1. http://soilquality.org.au/factsheets/organic-carbon-pools

24.01.2022 Just in case you had missed this, please find the link to the Smart Farms Small Grants link below, with Round 4 open until the 9th of October 2020. Don't miss out on your opportunity to secure funding for your farming operation to undertake sustainable agricultural projects - like composting your pastures or cropping land for example! Funding ranges from $5,000 - $100,000. Please ensure you share this among your contacts, especially those that are considering trying our compost ! https://www.agriculture.gov.au//australian-government-inve.

21.01.2022 An interesting article given the recent weather conditions experienced! Study finds that multi-species grassland mixtures increase yield stability, even under drought conditions. https://www.britishecologicalsociety.org/study-finds-multi/

21.01.2022 This is a terrific article which better explains the complex relationship between plants and beneficial soil microbes and why it is a vital link in soil health and plant productivity. https://www.researchgate.net//284180996_Manipulating_the_s

19.01.2022 While this isn't the most positive of articles, it highlights what we are striving to achieve with our compost, addressing the full mineral profile of our soils right down to the trace elements to support the ultimate health of the plants and the animals (including humans!) that graze on them. As I have noted before, our compost includes a comprehensive integrated mineral amendment program, identifying mineral deficiencies in the target soil and adding these, in proportion, t...o the compost at a late stage where they are chelated by the newly created humic and fulvic acid fractions. Consequently the minerals are immediately plant available when the material is applied to the field, providing a rapid response in the planted crops and pastures. Stories like this prove that there needs to be significant education around the importance of soil health in farming enterprises, which we are striving to achieve!

18.01.2022 Link for article detailing labile (active) carbon in soils, and why not all soil carbon is the same. http://soilquality.org.au/factsheets/labile-carbon

17.01.2022 Thought for the day in the words of Dr. William A. Albrecht, "A declining soil fertility, due to a lack of organic material, major elements, and trace minerals, is responsible for poor crops and in turn for pathological conditions in animals fed deficient foods from such soils, and mankind is no exception." (Dr. William A. Albrecht, Soils and Men, Yearbook of Agriculture, U.S. Dept. of Agriculture,1938).

16.01.2022 A map of Chris and Mary Cameron's property "Rockwood".

16.01.2022 A quick one today to upload some pictures and Brix readings taken from the community garden at Tenterfield that is utilising our compost. Uncomposted lucerne - Brix 9 Composted lucerne - Brix 14... This is a very interesting comparison, especially given the vastly different foliage cover. Both are given the same amount of attention, just one was given a little extra help with a dose of our compost! Broccoli - Brix 16 which classifies it as above excellent quality. Unfortunately there was no uncomposted broccoli to do a side by side comparison. We are currently working on developing a bagged range of compost for the home gardener. Please don't hesitate to lodge early interest!

15.01.2022 Here we are, starting the first batch of compost at our new site! Exciting times!

15.01.2022 One of the more recent articles I have read that highlights the overwhelming need to change our current systems and dramatically reduce our reliance on chemicals.

15.01.2022 Interesting read for the day, why all soil carbon is not the same!

15.01.2022 Obviously, this is a passion project for everyone at Rockmin Composts Pty Ltd. We believe in our work and in our product, and we derive immense satisfaction from assisting others improve their soil health and farm productivity levels. As a little something different, I thought I would share an excerpt of a letter from Des Leeke, Director of Traden Tubes Pty Ltd. In a time when the world seems to be flooded with negativity, we could all do with something a little more upbeat...! "My introduction to Rockmin Composts was on a small family farm near Toowoomba which grows rhubarb for the vegetable markets. My son-in-law has been bragging about a compost company that has this ‘You-Beaut’ material for growing crops. I didn’t take much notice until he did an application on the farm with the product from Rockmin Composts. Well the paddock that had the application, and the paddock next door with no application, What a difference! Four times the growth has happened on the treated paddock and the root system is very healthy, with nice clean, white, and lots of fibrous roots taking in the nutrient that has been applied to the soil." Thank you Des, it brings a smile to our faces every time that we read it!

12.01.2022 Our intense composting process mid-term. This picture was taken in the middle of the day and the compost is still producing visible steam!

11.01.2022 This is the core driver of our business, to increase the health of our soils to ensure all crops and pastures grown are nutrient dense, thereby passing on key health benefits to all that consume them. Soil is key to all living things!

10.01.2022 Again, confirmation that the use of highly mineralised compost is critical in sequestering carbon in agricultural soils.

10.01.2022 Getting increasingly frustrated by both our State and Federal Government's attitude towards improving soil health, I have been reading a myriad of research papers from projects worldwide that thankfully have stoked the fire within to continue to fight for our future and spread the good word on compost! If you haven't already done so, take the time to visit the Rodale Institute's website https://rodaleinstitute.org/, this is one of my go to places for all things on regenerati...ve agriculture. My favourite paper to date has to be their white paper - "THE POWER of the PLATE: The Case for Regenerative Organic Agriculture in Improving Human Health" which includes these three superb quotes: Let thy food be thy medicine and thy medicine be thy food. Hippocrates, 400 BC The health of soil, plant, animal and man is one and indivisible. Sir Albert Howard, 1947 People are fed by the food industry, which pays no attention to health, and are treated by the health industry, which pays no attention to food. Wendell Berry Feeding and nurturing our soil benefits every living thing on this planet, it is inextricably linked. I hope that we can work together to ensure this message gets out there and collaboratively build a better future for us all. Whether it is a futile effort or not, I am composing a letter with supporting research papers to Australia's new National Soils Advocate Dr Penelope Wensley highlighting the use (& need for) mineralised compost in regenerative agricultural systems. I am putting it out there, if anyone has any particular research papers or experiences that you feel I should include, please do not hesitate to message me their details. I truly hope that if we make enough noise, we will be heard! Gosh if Greta Thunberg can make world wide political waves just by complaining and offering no solutions, surely we stand some chance at having compost included in our National Soil Strategy with the mountain of research supporting its benefits?!! I look forward to hearing back from you all!

07.01.2022 In order to provide you all with greater insight into our experience and commitment to regenerative agriculture, I am including a brief bio of our key team members, starting with Chris Cameron, chief compost maker! I hope that you can spare a few minutes to read through this and appreciate Chris's journey! Regards Catriona (Chris's daughter!)...Continue reading

07.01.2022 To reinforce why we do what we do, here is our quote of the week: "A declining soil fertility, due to a lack of organic material, major elements, and trace minerals, is responsible for poor crops and in turn for pathological conditions in animals fed deficient foods from such soils, and mankind is no exception." (William A. Albrecht, Soils and Men, Yearbook of Agriculture, U.S. Dept. of Agriculture,1938). This is the driving factor for the team at Rockmin Composts, to restore the natural balance of minerals in our soils vital for the production of healthy plants and livestock, which we, the end consumer, ultimately benefit from.

05.01.2022 We have moved!!! The Rockmin Composts Team are delighted to announce that we have shifted our composting operations from Whyalla Feedlot at Texas to Wonga Plains Feedlot near Bowenville. We are excited to be working alongside Camm Agricultural Group to deliver superior compost to the region's agricultural producers and garden enthusiasts (watch this space!!). As always, if you have any queries, or would like some compost to trial, please do not hesitate to contact us!... Thank you for your support to date, and we look forward to continuing this soil health journey!

04.01.2022 Our latest batch is complete and looks glorious! Sample heading off for mineral analysis today. We are excited to see the results of our teams efforts, with extensive research leading us to alter our mix and methodology ever so slightly to retain as much nutritional goodness from the manure as possible. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you would like to order some of this compost for your soil, or if you would like any more information (including the analysis when it arrives)!

04.01.2022 Here is my first attempt at a demonstration video so please be kind and excuse the um’s! So here is my video, FINALLY!! As much as I hate seeing myself on a vi...deo, I hope that this helps to clearly show the difference our compost makes to soil. I apologise that the vision isn't overly clear, however there are close up pictures of the grass roots in my earlier post so that you can clearly see the root exudates. I would love to challenge you all out there to pull up a few weeds in your garden or a plant or two from your crops to check the condition of the roots. It is vital for vigorous plant health and productivity that they have root exudates. Feel free to upload your pictures!

02.01.2022 Nothing new here, but nice to see livestock portrayed positively in the environmental arena for a change!

02.01.2022 Another fun moment at Rockmin, bagging up a load to deliver to TAFE Queensland - Toowoomba Campus with Mike Wells (a Toowoomba gardening & horticultural icon) at the helm. We look forward to seeing the results!

01.01.2022 Steaming piles of the good stuff being pushed up ready for screening this afternoon. Excited to start delivering this out! As always, if anyone would like any (even small amounts for gardens) I am more than happy to arrange it!

01.01.2022 It was a possibility that this would happen. Let's hope that the true importance of food production in Australia is recognised and APPRECIATED!!!!

01.01.2022 More research to support what we already knew! The utilisation of our composting methodology combined with a green manure crop in between normal cropping rotations will provide significant lifts in soil organic matter levels and overall soil health. Something to ponder...!
