02.05.2022 We had a lovely wrap up to 2021 with many celebrations including-burying our time capsule from our 50 year celebrations, sharing our Christmas concert with our families, celebrating Allison's 35 years of loving service, enjoying a kindy movie afternoon and a Kindy Disco. Wishing everyone a safe and happy Christmas holiday.

28.04.2022 Rockhampton South Kindergarten has been lucky enough to secure funding to offer Free Kindy for 2022 to those born between 1/7/2017 and 30/6/2018. Which is very exciting! We do still have very limited spots available. Jump onto our website and join the waiting list! www.rsk.org.au

25.04.2022 We did it! Miss Allison was surprised today when our committee president Kristy and secretary Jade arrived to acknowledge and celebrate her 35 years of service to our kindergarten on behalf of the kindy. Thank you Allison for all you do for our kindy, families and community, you have been a part of so many memories and no doubt more to come!

21.04.2022 We still have 2 spots available for our Peacock Group (Thursday- Fridays alternative Wednesdays) for 2022. If you are still looking for a spot for next year please go onto our waiting list www.rsk.org.au

04.04.2022 We have been finishing off our Nature Plays with deep listening. We (children and educators) have all found it a great way to calm our bodies, minds and hearts, to connect and be present in the space we have had some much fun and a smooth transition back to kindy life. This delightful child has taken it to the limit! She is using all her body to listen and connect, and why not?!

28.03.2022 This week the Possum group shared a lovely story about a bat called Bitsy. This lead to a renewed interested in the flying fox colony at the gardens, that we can now see from our kindy fence. Investing further, we used our binoculars to view the animals carefully and learnt about the colony of Black and Little Red Flying Foxes. After making their own bats the children enjoyed playing with their bats, creating homes, caves, hanging them in trees, making whole bat families and... flying them around to find food for them to eat. We took a trip into the gardens to view the colony and see how big it is. While there we noticed the flying foxes fanning themselves to keep cool and how they walk along the branches. We also learnt the differences between flying foxes and the bats that live in the Capricorn Caves -Mega and Micro bats, what they eat, where they sleep, use of echolocation, and their size. We are also learning about how important these animals are to our ecosystem. Next week we have an environmentalist from the council coming to talk to us about the Flying Fox colony at the gardens so we can understand this better. See more

20.03.2022 On Tuesday, the Possum group visited the RACQ Capricorn Rescue Helicopter. We learnt - The rescue helicopter saves people who are sick or injured. It has a winch that it lowers to the ground to winch up the sick or injured person on the stretcher (bed). You need to put on a harness to connect you to the rope to go up and down on the winch. We all enjoyed going inside the helicopters and being able to sit in the cockpit where the pilot sits and checking out all the buttons.k...ids can’t touch the buttons. It was so cool to look inside the helicopter and sit in the seats, use the seatbelts and look at all the control buttons. We learnt that the driver of the helicopter is called the Pilot. They steer the helicopter with a lever called a joystick. The pilot sits in the cockpit and has lots of buttons to help control the helicopter. Derik, who spoke to us, is a helicopter mechanic. He fixes their engine. One helicopter had wheels. It is moved by a buggy called a Tow Motow motor. It can push and pull the helicopter out of the hanger. One helicopter had skidsthey looked like skis. Thank you so much for giving the children the opportunity to learn more about the helicopters they hear and see flying over the kindy and of the important job you do in the community.

02.03.2022 And to finish the week, the helicopter service! Thanks everyone at RACQ Rescue Helicopter service for having us. We enjoyed learning about the two helicopters and were able to get up close with crew and machines.

16.02.2022 Wow, what a week! Nature play on Wednesday in one of our favourite spots where we discovered the Great Elf tree, built a library (the bamboo) and finished off with some deep listening. Coobeerie Park visited with some friendly reptiles and we got up close and personal with lizards, snakes and a crocodile. And tomorrow we are off to visit the RACQ Rescue Helicopter service. What a fabulous community we live in .

03.02.2022 A keen interest in learning about reptiles lead us to plan a Nature Walk to visit the reptiles at the Zoo. The children eagerly took their clipboards so they could draw some of the animals. They noticed that the crocodile and Perentie have scales, have their abdomen close to the ground, they crawl, have long claws and observed how they warmed or cooled their blood by moving into the sun, shade or water. Back at kindy, many painted their favourite reptile. After observing the reptiles we moved to the Mammals where the children observed the dingo, wombat and koala in length, choosing to draw one of these. As they observed they talked about the features they noticed - fur, 4 limbs (legs) and that they have their babies lives and feed them milk.

25.01.2022 Feeling a little nervous about starting school. This is such a fun book to share.

25.01.2022 Unfortunately we will not be having our High Tea this year Our amazing fundraising committee has tried to make it work, but with the current restrictions with ...events we just aren't able to make it happen. Thank you all for your continued support of our Kindergarten and we hope to make next years event even better See more

23.01.2022 Jane Bourne and Stanley return with the classic story "5 Little Ducks". We've included some play & learning ideas below... What do you think the ducks were d...oing over the hills and far away? Do you think it would be tricky looking after 5 little ducklings? What might you have to do to keep them safe? Asking open-ended questions builds children's communication skills. Keep the conversation going - you never know where you may end up! You can also explore how many Find some of your small figurines or toys and act out the song. As each duck or toy is lost, talk about the number of ducks or toys left? Are there more or less than before? Play with grouping your toys. Talk about mathematical concepts of more, less, same and equal. Classifying, sorting, pattern making, measuring, counting, weighing, estimating, matching, and exploring shape, size, space, volume, position, direction and movement are mathematical concepts children explore through their play. #LearnThroughPlay #LoveCandK

22.01.2022 These little Eco Warriors were treated to a play in the Garden's playground today for all their hard work each fortnight in cleaning up the rubbish they find at the Botanical Gardens. Climbing trees, running through tunnels, swinging and enjoying this great playground with their friends was loved by all.

22.01.2022 We are having a fundraiser sausage sizzle at Bunnings on Saturday 21st November. If you're out and about come and say hi and enjoy a sausage or cold drink to support our Kindy :)

22.01.2022 It was a very exciting day for us all today with the visit from Cooberrie Park with all their amazing reptiles. We all loved being up, close and personal with Shingleback, Blue Tongue Lizard, the Western and Eastern Breaded Dragons, a baby Fresh Water Crocodile (4 years old) and 3 types of pythons Black headed Python, Carpet Python and a small spotted Python. They stayed for over an hour and allowed all the children and adults to feel comfortable, either touching, holding or just looking. We also learnt that skinks the shingleback and bluetongue have their babies live, along with some snakes. This experience was the icing on the cake after a keen interest all year in Reptiles, building Crocosiums (Croc play environments) and visiting the Reptiles at the Zoo.

22.01.2022 Are you helping to keep the environment clean for the animals that live there? Please listen to an important message from our young Eco Warriors.

21.01.2022 The children at Rocky South Kindy made these special wreaths to remember all who have served to keep our country safe. The children usually walk over and eat their ANZAC biscuits here as we share special ANZAC stories. This year we will all be Lighting up the Dawn.

20.01.2022 Learning about Force, Power, Catapults and Levers was all in a weeks work of play, fun, experimenting, wondering and learning at Rocky South Kindy last week.

19.01.2022 We also revisited some of our favourite experiments - lava lamps and volcanoes. We discovered that washing up detergent helps create a slower reaction and we can really see the bubbles. The children showed great confidence and enjoyment in their investigations and had theories and possible explanations for their discoveries.

19.01.2022 It all began with National Science week. We created 2 dioramas of the oceans - one warm and one cold - and then one day our oceans were filled with rubbish. No-one knows how but the children were very upset that it had happened. They talked about the problems that happen from pollution and quickly cleaned it up and sorted it into recyclable, scrunchable plastics and rubbish. This got us thinking about environments close to us and we wondered about our own Botanical Gardens ne...xt door, lots of wildlife and plants call it home. We wondered if it was rubbish free and if people were caring for it, so we decided that we would have an excursion to see and to count how many bins were available. Today we had our excursion. It started off slow, with a little bit of rubbish in the Japanese Gardens, but we were soon finding lots of rubbish. In the end we found 2 very full bags of rubbish on our short walk from kindy to the lagoon and back. We also were able to enjoy the treasures of our beautiful gardens - some cherry tomatoes growing on the way to the lagoon, some coconuts, animal tracks, feathers and skeletons and the many birds. We also had a special visitor Sherri, from C&K who joined us. Tomorrow we are going to decide what we will do next, we know we want to help everyone remember to do the right thing and keep the gardens clean, we just have decide the best way! See more

18.01.2022 Final days at kindy celebrating Christmas, friendship, along with our final group Gardens clean up around the playground.Oh the places you all will go.....

18.01.2022 Harold and Brittany recently had a wonderful few visits to Rockhampton South Kindergarten. They were both very impressed with what the children had learnt durin...g their visits (just ask them to show you how big their brains are!). Thanks for having us Rocky South Kindy #HealthyHarold #CQLifeEducation See more

17.01.2022 This term the Possum group have been following an interest in vegetable gardens. We have harvested from our kindy garden and cooked using the produce. We have set up a kindy Fruit and Vegetable shop, made a healthy man, used fruit as a stimulus for art, graphed our favourite fruit and vegetable and learnt all about why we should eat healthy food. Lots of us have awesome vegetable gardens at home and have been sharing our photos and bringing in produce to share.

17.01.2022 A few explosion along the way as we celebrated science week. Experimenting with bi-carb soda and vinegar, that we usually use in our volcanoes, lead to so much fun and exciting as we caught the gas in gloves and balloons, launched rockets, erupted volcanoes, experimented how to catch bubbles and explored magnets.

17.01.2022 A wonderful visit from Barry O'Rouke yesterday to congratulate us on our successful grant application, that will see us being able to paint our kindy both inside and out. Barry took time to share his own experiences of kindergarten and hear our stories too. Thank you Barry.

14.01.2022 What a way to finish our term, pizza party!! We had picked some tomatoes from our plants the week before and voted on pizza to use them. We created a graph to discover what pizzas we will be making, wrote a shopping list and then each created our own pizza to enjoy for lunch.

13.01.2022 Thank you Bunnings Rockhampton the Kindy kids will enjoy planting these

12.01.2022 Today we reflected on our excursion and made a plan. We looked at all the rubbish we had collected and sorted and decided we needed to tell people to take care of the gardens, the plants and the animals. As a group they have created posters we hope to display at the gardens to remind visitors to do the right thing. We have some to go at the Tea Room asking people not to feed the birds, and some at the playground to use the bins. Some children decided to write letters as well..., one has been written and will be sent to our local council and the other is below. We hope that we are going to help keep our gardens beautiful through our actions. "Dear People, I am Eliza and I am Levi and we are at kindy, Rocky South Kindy. We went on an excursion to the Botanical Gardens to pick up rubbish, count the bins and check that no-one feed the birds. We found rubbish, a lot of rubbish, 2 bags of rubbish. We picked it up and came back to sort it, some can be recycled. People need to put their rubbish in the bin so that it can go to the dump. The rubbish could go down to the lagoon, the river or the ocean. It could go into a animals tummy and make them sick and could die. We counted 24 bins, that is a lot, but there were no bins at the playground and we found lots of rubbish there. People need to put rubbish in the bin or take it home if there is no bin and not feed the birds. From Eliza and Levi." See more

12.01.2022 This is a sample of the excitment and fun we had a kindy this week during science week as we experimented with bicarb soda and vinegar. We sure had a few explosions along the way.

11.01.2022 A few tips about how to prepare your child for their first day at kindergarten.

10.01.2022 This week we plunged into the deep blue sea investigating sea creatures and taking a close look at fish. As the interest developed we shared some information texts, with the children eagerly sharing what they knew, what they had learnt and more questions they had. They made connections to their current knowledge and celebrated as we all learnt new things about the amazing creatures that live in our oceans.

09.01.2022 After National Science week last week the Peacock group continued to investigate the many areas of science. Following on from our balloon rockets today we created and tested hover crafts. We wondered if they would work on water, and after testing if they would float we discovered that they would travel but kept tipping, after some tial and error a solution was found!

07.01.2022 What an exciting time at our kindy. We have had our letter to the editor printed and an article about our environmental efforts published in our local newspaper - The Morning Bulletin. Yesterday we were very fortunate to have Councillors Donna Kirkland (Water and Supporting Better Environment), Shane Latcham (Waste and Waste to Resource Implementation) and Drew Wickerson (Communities and our Division 6 councillor) visit and thank the children for their efforts in keeping the ...Botanical Gardens clean and safe. They also thanked the children for their letters and the posters that they have created and will be in touch with us soon about the bin situation in the gardens. They were very excited by the enthusiasm and dedication that our children have and are excited by what they will bring to their communities as they grow and share their knowledge. They also gave each of the children a gift to say thanks, and donated bags and gloves to our kindy so we can continue to do what we do - keeping our land safe! They will also be visiting the Possum group who have also been looking at caring for the environment after seeing what we had been doing. See more

06.01.2022 What a great reminder, how different our lives would be without art.

05.01.2022 Thanks to a new lick of paint, our Kindergarten is looking fresh and inviting. We can't wait to meet all our new children this week and see where they'd like to explore and play.

04.01.2022 In December 2019, thanks to the hard work of our Committee, we received a grant from the Rockhampton Regional Council which enabled us to upgrade some of our fencing. One side of the upgraded fencing is between our kindy and the Rockhampton Botanical Gardens. With this in mind, one of our fabulous parents, Heather Watts, used her graphic design skills to create 3 pieces of amazing artwork which were transformed into panels to complete our fence. Each panel incorporates a dif...ferent theme relating to the Rockhampton region - industry, environment and culture and community. A big thank you to the Rockhampton Regional Council for their contribution allowing us to create an aesthetically pleasing and secure fence for our kindergarten. Also a shout out to our 2019 Executive Committee, Grants Officer, Heather Watts and families for their support.

04.01.2022 We were very lucky to have Miss Lydia and Miss Martha from the Queensland Ballet Company come and deliver a workshop with us. We learnt about direction, movement and levels and together created our own ballet to the music of Peter and the Wolf. We have continued to dance and move to over the week. Thank you Lydia and Martha, you were terrific!!

03.01.2022 On Saturday our Kindergarten hosted a Nature Play Professional Development for our fellow C&K colleagues from around CQ. A big thank you to all who let their youthful spirits loose in nature. We can't wait to get our little ones immersed in the wonder, freedom and adventure of Nature Play.

03.01.2022 And that's a rap for 2020. A huge thanks to all of our fun, exciting and supportive families, you've a difficult and uncertain year one to celebrate and remember for many good reasons. Thanks Peacocks, Allison, Cat and Carissa!!

02.01.2022 It was our final excursion as a group to take part in our cleanup of the beautiful Botanical Gardens. It is truly amazing to see the spark that is within our children as they excitedly set off on another adventure hugging and thanking the trees we pass along with greeting those we pass. This week we focused on the zoo fence line as we had not been to that part of the gardens. We were lucky enough to see the macaws eating breakfast and the otters out playing. We also saw the ...excitement around the new meerkats! After morning tea we returned to where it all began, the Japanese Gardens. We had a great chat to an artist who shared her watercolour with us and spoke to the children about their work. After another tidy we returned to kindy. We know that even though this is our last group effort together that our children will continue to be environmental activist ensuring that they help make the world better. We are so proud of your efforts and commitment Peacocks, you've achieved a lot in a short time. See more

01.01.2022 May we raise children who love the unloved things - the dandelion, the worms & spiderlings. Children who sense ... the rose needs the thorn & run into rainswept days the same way they turn towards sun... And when they're grown & someone has to speak for those who have no voice may they draw upon that wilder bond, those days of tending tender things and be the ones. ~ Nicolette Sowder Wilder Child Art by Lucy Campbell, lupiart.com Post content courtesy of Janet Lansbury
