Kids bunkered and bored with learning on devices White ute, white painters clothes and Dunlop volleys A few white whiskers in his beard To match the flecks of white undercoat on his face as he moves nimbly over trestles From the southern side to the west Then north, where the sun heats the boards early The blistered peeling chamfers Released of decades old colours With the grind and burr of sandpaper The assembly of aluminium ladders and planks Draws the boys outside Curious to climb, ask the patient painter questions of colour And is it dry yet? Its weeks of this, stuck at home A rabble crew with cabin fever And a benevolent painter restoring pride in our timber beams Balancing like a rigger on an old sailing ship East at last, in morning sun All of us on the strangest ocean
