16.01.2022 Mr West’s funeral service is set down for Friday, 5th February 2016 in the School Chapel at 11am. All members of the Trinity family and Anglican community are invited to be present. It should be noted that given anticipated numbers and the fact that seating in the Chapel is very limited, the service will be also relayed through to The Centenary Centre and The James Wilson Hogg Assembly Hall. Limited parking will be available on No. 3 Oval, accessed from Victoria Street. RSVP to [email protected] This is the life story of a giant of Australian education, Roderick Ian West. It is befitting that the final chapter was written by his wife Janet after he passed in January 2016. Balmain boy, inspirational teacher and headmaster, Rod West transformed institutions by his inexorable focus on the people within them. For Rod, it was always people before process, teaching before educationalism and actions before words. His mantra was "The heart of education is the education of the heart" and he touched the lives of thousands. "The Heart of Education" is edited by Graham Anderson, one of the 33 teachers turned headmasters under Rod's stewardship. It is a valuable lesson delivered by one of this country’s greatest teachers and a certain reminder of true leadership. ----- Editors The final chapter of these memoirs was completed by Rod’s wife of 56 years, teacher and published Australian historian, Dr. Janet West. The Heart of Education edited by Graham Anderson, Arden Anglican School Principal and former Trinity Grammar School English master. ----- Roderick West, rejected by the educational system of his day, was to become a legend at all levels of that system. A Trinity parent, 2016 ----- 10% of proceeds will be donated to The Sydney Story Factory. The Sydney Story Factory is a not-for-profit creative writing centre for young people in Redfern. Our aim is to change the lives of young people, particularly those from marginalised backgrounds, through creative writing and storytelling.
