25.01.2022 An awesome ethical business - have a well deserved break

24.01.2022 Another great school Holiday program about to start. Once again we are teaming up with Parks and Wildlife Service for another Shorebird activity! Join us and help us celebrate Broome's beautiful shorebirds and be part of a Wall of Wings Display! Thursday 1st October 2:30 to 4pm Broome Youth and Families Hub 22 Louis St.... 23.01.2022 Sand Bubbler Crab’s (Scopimera inflata) tiny sand balls (they extract food particles from the sand) are centred around a small burrow, into which the owner swiftly retreats if it detects potential danger. These two must be feeling a bit of silly season stress

23.01.2022 Birdwatching legend Adrian Boyle Is also a frog watching legend photographer. Ady has generously shared photos of the 13 frogs in the Broome region. This will have us on frog watch from here on, come on the rain Thanks Ady

22.01.2022 Let’s see if FB can be used for good? Do you hate seeing plastic in the ocean or at the beach? If yes, please consider throwing some spare change at this very cool project?... James Brown, third generation pearl farmer, marine biologist has been nominated to participate in the Take 3 for the Sea CEO annual cleanup event this year!! We all know that millions of tonnes of plastic are going into the sea each year and how great is it to finally see some initiatives to slow that down and possibly even turn it around. As with everything the best way to make transformational change is through education and that’s what I really like about this project. Imagine engaging 1 Million kids about the issues of plastic in the ocean, there are so many brilliant things being created by young crew these days that I just know they will come up with new solutions to these problems. So I will lead by example, and on the 20th November, I will go to the muddy smelly places where most people avoid, along with other Central Coast business owners, to help clean the Tuggerah Lakes foreshore. Last year in 45 minutes, they collected over 200kgs of waste! If you want to help out too, you can participate by following Take 3’s simple method taking 3 pieces of rubbish away with you every time you visit the ocean. You can also donate to the cause and help me reach the top of the leader board! Click link below and select my name from the dropdown menu. https://www.ceocleanup.com/fundraise/ All money raised helps Take 3 from the Sea deliver education programs in schools, surf clubs and communities around Australia. Their goal is to educate 1 million school children by 2023! You all know that I am (Janes) is a little competitive..... I would love to win and raise the most money so don’t be tight?

21.01.2022 Great photos by Adrian Boyle on board BroomeWhaleWatching this morning. Australian Snubfin Dolphin and Dugong WoW, Roebuck Bay is such a jewel for Broome, look after it and keep your boat speed below 5 knots if you see nearshore dolphins or dugong.

19.01.2022 THE NEW BEACH BOYS: MUSIC FOR FISH If you were going to charm a fish with a mixtape, what would you play? University of Exeter marine biologist Tim Gordon has the answer. Tim recorded healthy Australian coral reefs and played them in dying reefs to lure fish species back.... For now, it’s just a proof of concept. We’ve shown we can do it. One day, we may be able to target specific fish species by mimicking their calls, says Tim.

18.01.2022 Parts of Roebuck Plains transform into a wetlands after heavy rain, attracting an incredible diversity of wildlife. The wildlife in the Kimberley region is remarkable and we need to look after it forever and a day.

17.01.2022 Over the last few months we have been promoting the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology (ANSTO) Shorebird Poster Competition among Broome primary students, years 3 to 6. In the past this competition has been restricted to the eastern states but this year it was decided to run nationwide. With Broome being the 'Shorebird capital of Australia' we definitely had to be involved!! The aim of the competition is to create public awareness for shorebirds. Entries have now close...d and have been sent to ANSTO in NSW for judging. Broome has submitted 18 entries and these were displayed at the last Science on the Broome Coast presentation. Partnering with the Broome Bird Observatory, these entries will be involved in a local competition as well, with category winners receiving a Mangrove Tour family pass. Winners for the local comp will be announced the 1st September. To help students understand why Broome is such a special place for Shorebirds, Lindall Kidd, Migratory Shorebird Program Officer for Birdlife Australia organised an online presentation - https://drive.google.com//1uqWuUrcrVOn1l4Luv0ha3YzI_X/view Copies of the posters are on display at the Broome Library for everyone to see! Many, many thanks to Birdlife Australia and Lindall Kidd for her efforts, the Broome Bird Observatory for donating the local prizes, Kimberley Parks and Wildlife service for their support and Inspiring Australia for funds allowing the Science on the Broome Coast Series to happen!

04.01.2022 A rare mangrove snake, endemic to Roebuck Bay, is under threat from a proposal to clear mangroves at Streeters Jetty. A scientific survey needs to be undertaken to determine if it is found elsewhere in the bay before any clearing goes ahead. Good to urge Minister Stephen Dawson for a proper survey to be carried out. Send him a quick email here - mailto:[email protected]
