25.01.2022 Roger Day 86 - Bar Harbor to Portland via Augusta 22nd July 2019 We had a late breakfast before setting off for Portland via Augusta.... US1, once through Ellsworth, is a fine road which eventually merges into the I95. The I95 is an even finer road, as are all the Interstates. We had a quick 2-hour drive into Augusta where we had lunch with Jackie, Carol’s sister. We only spent two hours with her as we were anxious to get to Portland before the afternoon traffic started. This was enough time to settle, in Carol’s favour, that she, Carol and I had been to Bar Harbor and Cadillac mountain in Acadia National Park. I was adamant the previous night, when talking with Carol that this was only my second visit to Bar Harbor and my first to Acadia. I said to her that this is not the type of place you forget. It seems like I did forget because Jackie confirmed that the three of us had indeed been to Bar Harbor and Acadia. Jackie has a remarkably good memory and recalled a few other incidents that I had forgotten. Her opening words to us when I arrived were did you run out of gas. She was recalling the time when I misread the gas gauge and ran out of gas, stranding us in the middle of nowhere. This incident I had not forgotten I drove to Augusta and I know Susan was nervous about my tendency to end up on the wrong side of the road. I did this just once on the bike coming into Ellsworth. Had I had my wits about me, I should have lied to her and said I was crossing the road because the sidewalk on the other side was shadier. My memory is as bad as my inability to lie Susan drove into Portland where we had reserved a night in the Tru Hotel, a new brand being offered by the Hilton. It was a nice hotel especially since it was new. We had dinner at the Crackerjack and then headed back for an early night
08.01.2022 Susan: End of the Road Wednesday July 24, 2019 Where to begin.... Back in 2015, I wanted to try bicycle touring. I had ridden for about a week on the Oregon coast and got a taste of it. I had the bike and some gear but needed somebody to show me the ropes. This is where Roger comes in to the picture. We were both members of Adventure Cycling which is all things touring. A monthly magazine also let you place ads in it for equipment or anything you might need, including ridin...Continue reading
06.01.2022 Roger Day 87 Scranton PA 23rd July 2019 We got up at 6am this morning thinking we had a lot to do before Susan’s flight took off just after 9. As it happens, her flight was delayed until about 10:45 just minutes before mine left so we could have got up at 8 had we known... We had breakfast in the lobby, headed out and filled the car with gas and then drove to the airport, where we dropped off the car. I was TSA Pre-approved, and Susan was not. They don’t trust people from the south here it seems. Anyway, when we arrived at the TSA queue, I went one way via the TSA Pre-approved line and the Susan went the other way through the Great Unwashed line. We were the only two in the queues and my walk was longer than hers, so she got to the security agent before me. Apart from the devaluing of my TSA Pre-Approval, this was the shortest time in a TSA queue ever. The airport was empty, so everything worked well Susan plane got delayed until 10:45 so we left almost at the same time. It was sad seeing Susan disappear into the plane, but we have had this a few times. My flights worked well and I arrived in Scranton on time, where Grant and his mother-in-law Carol met me. It was a long drive to the Poconos. Deb and Gene have a great house up here and it is a wonderful place to spend a few days;
01.01.2022 Susan: Heading Home Tuesday July 23, 2019 You know how you never want to get caught in one of those weather related back ups at the airport? Yeah, me too. It was that kind of day. We got up early because my flight was at 9:15. We had breakfast and headed to the airport. Didn't take long to fill the rental car with gas and get to the Hertz rental return and get into the airport. The airport was all but empty. That was the best part of the day. And then it went downhill from ...Continue reading
