25.01.2022 In the touring world the Rohloff is the gold standard, and there are many riders who have ridden 100,000kms and more... without an issue. That's why touring cyclist travelling the globe use a Rohloff Speedhub. In the mountain biking world, the Rohloff is not well known - it's not popular and it's rare to see one out on the trail. On an eMtb, the Rohloff Speedhub is really the perfect drive train option - an expensive upgrade, but can it withstand abuse? This video may give an insight into the type of riding I am subjecting my Rohloff to. So far so good... 2,000kms all off road on the trails - social riding and racing. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tHheFe3xJwQ&t=1s

24.01.2022 Out and about yesterday with the Rohloff racing the Qld Sunshine Series XCO at Nerang, finished 1st in the eBike category. Love the new Specialized Turbo Levo bike with the Rohloff... 1.5 hours and 30kms of rocks, berms, drop-offs, jumps, a little mud and some great fast flowing single track. Great event and great course... thanks to Chris Thompson and GCMTB club. 23.01.2022 Project Lero was a success. Replacing the derailleur system on my Specialized Turbo Levo Expert eMtb worked out to be better than expected. Easier to ride and shift, clean and quiet chainline and the handling seems even better balanced. Love the Rohloff, love the Levo Expert... and now I can just enjoy the ride. https://vimeo.com/329098140

23.01.2022 For those who like a little custom machining and custom frame building. A Rohloff Speedhub drive train with a custom designed and custom machined trigger shifter - beautiful job! The complete bike was designed and built by a good friend of mine for touring - mainly dirt and gravel roads. He makes one-offs... for himself, for the challenge, for a specific purpose and for the achievement. By the way, that Speedhub is his original, purchased in 2003. Very nice Job!

22.01.2022 Project LERO (Levo-Rohloff) Part-2. This is a project to convert the Specialized Turbo Levo eBike to a Rohloff Speedhub drivetrain... ie. remove the derailleur, cassette and handle bar trigger shift. Rohloff A12 thru-axle Speedhub received, new wheel set built and everything fits and works fine so far, just need to install the cables and test ride tomorrow. Preliminary test ride up and down the driveway done... checked the electric motor operation, checked new sensor magnet installation and trialled the new drivetrain... all perfect. Next is to take to the trails and do the real test.

21.01.2022 The customer who owns this derailleur wants a Rohloff. Started the process with the A12 Measurement Kit. It's an eFatbike.

21.01.2022 The 2020 Update. 9 months on and 2500kms on my Specialized Turbo Levo eMtb fitted with (converted to) a Rohloff Speedhub drivetrain. No issues, original chain, original rear sprocket, original front chain ring and nothing needs replacing - just keep on enjoying the ride. Watch it in HD :-) https://youtu.be/Zuhcd2-a7z8

18.01.2022 Project LERO (Levo-Rohloff) Part-3. The real test begins, out on the trails. The video is an edited 10min version of my 20km test ride today at the Nerang State Forest. Tried a new trail and a few that I know well. The end result... yes I am biased, but I love the Rohloff with the eBike. My original issue was the derailleur system on an eBike takes a real beating - and this was confirmed again today by others who own eBikes or ride them... as much as you try to be careful wi...th each shift, the electric motor often kicks in and you hear the familiar 'bang' or 'crunch'... not good for the cassette or chain or front chain ring. My new Specialized Levo is only a few weeks old and the front chain ring had noticeable wear when I fitted a new chain with the Rohloff Speedhub. So you can watch the video... or read the conclusion. Conclusion: the Rohloff and the new stronger heavier rims came in at 1.5kg heavier than the standard build. Did it have an affect, not really according to Strava with a new personal best on one trail section and on another 6min trail only 7 secs slower... which was done at the end of the ride when I was tiring (not at the start, when I was fresh and recorded that PB) and I also slowed to refix my phone bracket during the run. How did the Rohloff perform? Well... as expected the shifting was easy, no big 'derailleur' bangs and just so much simpler and quieter with a single chainline that doesn't move. After the ride, a few of the guys at Just Ride Nerang(#justridenerang, where I purchased the bike) had a quick ride and 3 out of 4 were impressed (one was unsure, as shifting with the Rohloff cannot be done whilst pedalling - or at least it takes more effort if you are pedalling). If you ride with a Rohloff this becomes second nature and you learn to shift a little different... in saying that, I have been shifting the eBike derailleur gears the same way (and cautiously) because shifting under power or pedalling, really abuses and impacts the derailleur and drivetrain (you hear it regularly). One thing I had forgotten being a long-time Rohloff rider, was the quietness of the Rohloff drive train... as there is no chain movement with a single rear sprocket, the guys at Just Ride Nerang noticed the quietness and simplicity immediately. Very happy. The bike is now bullet proof, quiet and will require very little drivetrain maintenance. The cabling is only temporary on the outside of the frame for the test ride and I will look into a more concealed and tidier cabling option over the coming weeks. Project Lero was a success and well worth the time and cost involved for long term trouble-free eBike riding. https://vimeo.com/327714921

18.01.2022 The latest Rohloff AG converted eMtb. There had been 7-8 Merida E160 owners contact me about converting the Merida E160 to a Rohloff drivetrain and initially we thought there may be an issue with the dropout width being out-of-spec with Rohloff. So I decided to do the measurement process and a big thanks to the guys at 99 Bikes for loaning me an E160 to measure up in their workshop. The end result is that the Merida E160 is a perfect bike for the Rohloff conversion. With that... knowledge, I had Warren Polley from Gympie wanting to proceed with his Merida E160/E900 converted asap. The Rohloff A12-Speedhub wheel fitted without any issue or modification. We did space the rear caliper up with a 1.5mm washer to give a little more rotor "top clearance" as it was close. We relocated the left brake hose and the e-motor mode wire to the right side cable entry clamp/bracket, and drilled an additional hole on the left cable entry clamp so both Rohloff shifter cables fitted neatly... with a nice flowing bend. Warren wanted a little higher gearing so we went to a 17-tooth rear sprocket and swapped the standard sprocket carrier to a slimline to align the chainline perfectly. Cabling was fed carefully through the frame internal through a black nylon tubing shroud to protect the cable housing from rubbing, bends and rattling. The cables come down the front down tube and then over the top of the motor. We also fitted the Rohloff DH Chain Tensioner which neatly tucks up tightly under the rear swingarm, stays in place over the rough stuff and is less susceptible to get caught by sticks, rocks and other nasties. We didn't do an initial weigh in, but the final weight was 23.6kg with pedals. The rear wheel went from 2.95kg to 3.78, a 0.83kg increase. But there is a weight reduction with the removal of the rear derailleur and derailleur trigger shifter which is replaced with the cabled Rohloff shifter. It's an eBike so weight is not a big issue in any case. Finally the testing (will post some videos later)! Put simply... the Rohloff works as it should... quiet, no noisy derailleur changes, smooth with the single chainline and it's easy the change gears. If you want, chnage 3-4 gears at a time or 8-9 gears at a time - whatever is needed. The Rohloff has no limitations with the number of gears that can be changed at once, and for mountain biking I find that a big plus. I rode some familiar trails and a few demanding ones to test the cabling, making sure there was no excessive rubbing or movement. It was quick 17kms and by the end of the ride I was really enjoying the bike and picked up a new KOM and a couple a new PBs on one of my favourite trails which is mainly downhill... Pete's. The testing went as expected, no issues and like most Rohloff riders... "I just enjoyed the ride"!

14.01.2022 We had the pleasure of a visit from Barbara and Bernie Rohloff on Tuesday, who are over holidaying in Australia for the very first time. They were accompanied by Maria (Barbara's sister) and Dieter who started Rohloff in Australia so many years ago, until their retirement and handover to ourselves in July 2012. Very special visit for Denise and I to catch up here in Australia. Always a pleasure... thanks for dropping by Barbara, Bernie, Maria and Dieter.

13.01.2022 What better present could I give my grandson on his 3rd birthday... a custom made Rohloff jersey just like his Dad and his Grandpa wears (Jenna Milburn, Denise Moir, Jane Milburn)

12.01.2022 Took my Rohloff converted Specialized Turbo Levo out for another race last Saturday. The annual Bayview Blast, a 25km one-lap sprint... placed 2nd in the eMtb category behind a very good rider and quicker young gun (well 20 years younger then this old gun). Completed the race in 1:09:51 (a minute quicker than last years winning time) with an average speed of 21.4km/h and average heart rate 160bpm, 170 max. First time I have ever ridden at Bayview... awesome trails and facilities out at Bayview Conservation Park, Mt Cotton (Brisbane). Definitely going back. Rohloff eBike Conversions: about to do the next Rohloff eMtb conversion with a Merida E160 E900. Wheel being built later this week and should have some conversion photos next week. 11.01.2022 2,000KM UPDATE. Well the Specialized Turbo Levo Comp which I converted to a Rohloff drivetrain on week-2 of ownership (24-Mar-19), continues to perform without issue or any significant wear. Others with derailleur drivetrain eMtbs will share a much different story. 2,000kms all on mtb trails... all serious trail riding, with 6 races and 90 Strava KOMs. I'm still using the original front chainring, original rear sprocket and original chain - the chain is starting to wear and i...t now measures some stretch, although all within the limits (no need to change any time soon). Oil changed once at 1000kms and again just now at 2000kms (not really necessary, but I wanted to check the oil at these milestones for any signs of unexpected wear being an eMtb - but none, all looks normal). Rohloff oil changes are normally every 5000km on once a year. I've enjoyed getting back into the racing after 10 years and ended taking out the eBike category in the SE Qld XCO series (cross-country), 2nd in the 25km Bayview Blast and yesterday another win in my first Superflow event (it's a relaxed format enduro style race, 3 trails and best time out of a possible 5 runs on each). I did 2 runs on 2 trails that I stuffed up on, and just 1 on the final trail). Forgot to turn the motor on on the first trail run and a rock dislodged the battery connector on the second. Ended up with the fastest overall time for the event (it's downhill, but I do have an eBike advantage for the little pedalling here and there). So I've listed those events and achievements to demonstrate how serious and demanding the 2,000 kms of testing has been. I'd like to say that the testing is over, but I love riding... so my Rohloff fitted Specialized Levo will continue to receive maximum punishment out on the trails, with much more riding and racing to come. Enjoy your ride!

11.01.2022 The Merida E160 Rohloff-XL Fatbike! Seen one of these before? No... this is a Rohloff Australia custom build. 10.01.2022 EMBN world eMtb news last week... Episode 131 'Ghetto Talk' focused on our Rohloff conversions. Thanks to Steve and Chris at EMBN for the nice little recap of what we've done and doing here in Australia (and assisted others around the globe) with the eMtb Rohloff drivetrain conversions. It won't be too long and I will need to make an update video on how my Turbo Levo Rohloff is performing... currently at 3,900kms and still going strong with the original drivetrain - original chain, sprockets and Rohloff geared hub. 10.01.2022 OIL LEAK TRIALS We replaced the whole internal gear unit on 2 Rohloff Speedhubs last week with apparent oil leaks... both were done under warranty at no charge. We rely almost 100% on a few standard tests and checks carried out before we receive the Speedhub. Because oil can travel, it is very important that the tests are done to try and help identify the leak origin. And even with these tests done, I'm not always convinced that there is a leak problem. For those interested, ...a little technical background. Whilst the Speedhub should not lose oil, oil weeping or sweating can happen (so don't worry, don't be concerned). Why... a Rohloff Speedhub has no top or bottom like an automotive gearbox has, and as such, any changes in air pressure or temperature (eg. aircon to riding in 35 heat, extreme altitudes, air travel etc) must be balanced out through either the hollow quick-release axle or through the specially designed hub-shell seals which also act like an engine breather. This is sweat oil (weeping) and is completely normal for this type of design. So the LEAK TEST TRIAL. We decided to switch the 2 problem internal gear units (with apparent leaks), into two problem-free Rohloff mountain bikes. To exaggerate any possible leak issue, we filled these Speedhubs with 25ml of Rohloff Cleaning oil... which is a much lighter oil (like water) and will show up any leak much easier than the normal Rohloff All-Seasons Oil. THE RESULTS - only early days of the trial, but after 4-5 hours riding... no visible leaks! No external leaks and inspecting the inside the cable box, again no leaks and no oil. We will keep monitoring this trial over a few months. WHY NO LEAKS - we believe the original reported leaks were caused from an altitude or temperature extreme... that small amount of leaked (expelled) oil then pools inside the external gear mech and/or cable box. Then oil keeps draining from these components... this oil is seen as ongoing leaking.

10.01.2022 One of the latest Rohloff conversions. Great job done by Jonny Sprockets of Toowoomba on this carbon frame Norco Search XR. A few little challenges with the flat-mount disc brake, but it all came to together very nice! Looks great, works great and most importantly the customer is very happy. 10.01.2022 Racing again yesterday at Samford north of Brisbane Round 3 of the SE Qld Sunshine Series XCO. 3 out of 3 eMtb category wins now on the Rohloff converted Specialized Turbo Levo. First time riding at Samford and the local guys had done a great job of building, setting-out and creating a top race course... a lot of fun, plenty of ups and downs, lots of single track, a few bridges, zig-zags up the hills, some good slippery gravel... a little of everything. Awesome venue and thanks to all those that helped and supported the event. Rohloff AG Just Ride

09.01.2022 Not a Rohloff... but his father has 3 Rohloffs and is part of the Rohloff Australia duo. My son's new 2019 Intense Carbine... Foundation build. For those mountain bikers out there, this is one very stable, very plush and very very capable serious all-mountain mtb. We had it out on the Nerang 2018 Commonwealth Games trails for it's first test ride last weekend. And for those who follow the World DH mountain bike scene... the new 2019 Intense Racing team has to be the hottest lineup out there. My nephew Jack Moir is now joined by Aaron Gwin and Neko Mulally (https://www.pinkbike.com//gwin-mulally-and-moir-on-intense)

09.01.2022 Our custom modified Merida E160 frame and Rohloff converted rear drive has hit the world eMtb news on EMBN's Show, Episode 129. The latest Project Rohloff-Fatty... the Merida E160 'beach n bush bike'. Thanks to Chris and Steve at EMBN (I will write to you guys with some photos of the modified rear frame of the E160 - we did some serious widening of its rear end). 08.01.2022 Another eMtb Rohloff conversion... Christian's very sweet looking Specialized Kenevo. We supplied Christian the Rohloff A12 Speedhub and all the components required for the build and he did the rest. And I must say, he's done a very nice job - attention to every detail, beautifully installed and cabled. Christian's story and ride impressions in his words... "Ive owned the Kenevo for just on a year and a half now and in that time I went through 3 derailleurs, 3 chains, 1 chai...nring and 2 hubs. I was getting sick of breaking my bike in the middle of the bush and constantly changing parts. I ride cross country, gravity, parks and a bit of downhill, and the Rohloff hasnt missed a beat! The whole system is quiet, chain slap almost non existent and the 'gear changes' are so much more reliable and consistent. The ground clearance is way better in the rocky stuff and in the mud and dirt the Rohloff setup doesnt pick up all the crap like the derailleur did. At first I had to get used to the gearing and backing off before changing, although this I picked up pretty quickly. I did find on the steep climbs I needed to choose the correct gear as you cant change under load, but again I quickly learnt what gear suited the hill I was about to climb. I especially love changing gears while stopped or when I get stuck on a hill and have to restart in a lower gear, a simple twist and Im there and no more lifting a heavy eBike to cycle the cranks. On the downhills I absolutely love it. So so much better than a derailleur. Because you dont pedal as much going down, you can choose a gear to suit whatever you're about to attack without pedalling, which is super quick and handy. I also felt like the bike had more momentum, whether due to the extra weight or the hub gearing itself? Either way, I loved it. Yes the initial cost is higher, but for what you get it's hands down worth it. The Rohloff is well built, easily maintained and takes anything I throw at it. What more does one want from a product!"

08.01.2022 Another recent Rohloff Speedhub conversion we did last week. An interesting one being a Lekker Amsterdam GT eBike... Lekker was apparently "born in Amsterdam and raised in Australia"? This model has the Enviolo (ex-NuVinci) constant variable transmission geared hub fitted. The issue the customer had was a very limited gear range (310%), and therefore needing more lower and higher gearing, and that the bike seemed to be underpowered to his expectations. We discussed the Rohlof...f benefits with the customer being a much wider gear range (nearly double... 526%) and the "perceived" power increase that could be expected. "Perceived" as it is the loss of efficiency with the Enviolo (NuVinci) geared hub that will consume power (power output from the motor doesn't change, but efficiency loss will consume motor power and pedaling effort). The Enviolo, from reported tests, has an efficiency of around 84%, whilst the Rohloff is the most efficient geared hub for a bicycle being around 95% (see efficiency comparison graph attached). The end result is what counts. After the customer's first ride with the Rohloff, he wrote back... "30 kms this morning and some areas with steep uphills, it was a great improvement. The gear range is much better, cadence now no problem and very happy. Thank you very much for your work, really appreciated".

07.01.2022 Another Specialized Rohloff conversion... Sam's 2019 Kenevo. This one was installed at JustRide Nerang where I helped out a little with their first Rohloff eMtb conversion. Not really needed, JustRide did an excellent job and kudos to Jack on the build and Nicolai on the frame protection (very nice clear matt). Sam has been out on the trails with the Kenevo and also finding some new ones... "been exploring and wow, the bike is built for that". He also mentioned he had a bought a Rohloff Speedhub some 12 years back for his old Optibike, saying it was possibly one of the very first eBike installs :-). And in Sam's words about the Kenevo fitted with the Rohloff... "What a combo!"

07.01.2022 Now that the testing is all done and proven with the Rohloff eMtb conversion, some tidy up work was in need. Cables were rerouted internally, inside the Specialized Turbo Levo's carbon frame... it looks good, all hidden and protected, and tested all ok today out on the trail. Have had an amazing number of enquiries from the video I published recently (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WqFdsFMSBsk), not only from Australia, but around the globe with eBike owners wanting to insta...ll a Rohloff to remove their derailleur/cassette problems. The common feedback I am receiving is that the eBike cassette/derailleur/chains are lasting around 1000-2000km... which aligns with what I have been told locally. Obviously the environment the bikes are ridden in has a significant impact on longevity of these components. One eBike commuter wrote to me recently... "I replace my cassette and chain every 6 weeks or 1100 miles". And the testing has been serious... out on the local mtb trails in both dry and wet, rocky, dusty, loose and hardpack, drop-offs and jumps... even race conditions.

06.01.2022 Met a young German tourist travelling around Australia when we visited Cape Leeuwin in Western Australia a few months back. I told Michael to call me when he got to Brisbane and I would loan him a bike and show him some local trails. He's German and had never ridden with a Rohloff before :-). Now he has! Daisy Hill trails... Michael enjoyed the trails and he got used to the Rohloff in no time. He gave me four 6-packs of beer and when I asked if both shopping bags had beer in he replied... "of course, there's a carton. Isn't that how you say thank you in Australia"? https://vimeo.com/297411980

06.01.2022 For those who like mountain biking... one of the local trails at Nerang State Forest called the Exit Trail (natural rocky single track, 2 1/2 mins long at Strava KOM pace). Not that you can see the Rohloff working or the gear changing, but it does show the type of trails I ride with the Rohloff. I find the Rohloff gear changing much quicker as you can be flying along a fast flowy trail in say gear 12, come to a gully with a climb out the other side, and as you enter you just grab 5-6 gears in one turn and climb out in gear 5. Simple, it works and it's quiet. Rohloff AG Just Ride https://vimeo.com/355669435

05.01.2022 Project LERO (Levo-Rohloff). For those interested in following this one, I am in the process of converting my new Specialized Turbo Levo eMtb from derailleur to a Rohloff A12 thru-axle Speedhub. The A12 measurement process is done and the new Rohloff A12 hub has been ordered. In the meantime, I'm having a lot of fun out on the trails on my first eMtb. The new rims for the Rohloff are 32-hole DT Swiss HX531 Hybrid and the front hub will be a DT Swiss 530 Hybrid Boost 110/15mm.... Now thinking through the cable routing and waiting for the new Rohloff A12 to be shipped. The derailleurs on the eMtbs I've tested so far all take quite a beating and impact from the extra power that can be produced... that is, when pedalling and electric motor torques are combined. May be interesting with the Rohloff as the role-on effect of the electric motor could make shifting the Rohloff difficult at times... so we will see how it all performs when the Rohloff is fitted and I'm out on the trails. Ultimately I would like to fit the Rohloff E14 electronic shifting to this bike. But currently the E14 is only available for the latest Bosch motors. #justridenerang @justridenerang

05.01.2022 For those who want to learn a little more about the Rohloff A12 Speedhub (12mm thru-axle) measurement process and the Rohloff eMtb conversions we have been doing. I developed the info-video to answer the many questions coming from around the world as a result of the Specialized Rohloff-Levo video I published. https://vimeo.com/346199290

04.01.2022 Just returned last month from a great Tasmanian holiday... plenty of mountain biking on some of the best trails in the world. My Rohloff converted Specialized Turbo Levo continues to perform flawlessly, with the original drivetrain now with 3,300kms. So much fun on the trails in Tassie riding all the best... Derby, St Helens, Bay of Fires and Maydena! And along the way we took in a lot of the best Tasmania had to offer with scenery, campsites, local foods and attractions. We ...also visited Rohloff retailers and service centres in Victoria and Tasmania and helped out one of our customers in St Helens with his recumbent, which had some a number of installation issues which we resolved and rectified. Tasmania is definitely a must see, must ride part of the world - and it is perfect for an eMTB! We were very fortunate to bump into an old friend in Derby from boarding school days, Robert Haskins. Rob raced offroad motorcycles throughout the 70s and early 80s with many national enduro wins and ISDE gold. He loves and rides eMtbs and knows all the trails in NE Tasmania... so guess who had a mtb guide for a week. We had a lot of fun riding Derby and nearby trails and reminiscing many old stories and memories. Paul Moir, Denise Moir

04.01.2022 Specialized Levo-Rohloff eMtb 1500km Update. Another 500kms ridden and still no significant chain wear. The Rohloff Caliber-2 chain wear indicator tool is used to measure chain stretch, which when detected can prevent premature sprocket wear. Measurement side A is for aluminium and titanium sprockets (0.075mm per link), and side S for steel sprockets (0.1mm per link). If the finger drops through the links and lays flat on the chain, that indicates the maximum stretch per link... has occurred. The Caliber-2 (Rohloff Part No.3000) is a handy tool... a precision measuring device available for $38.40 plus postage. I am still hearing from eMtb owners, stories of multiple chain, cassette and derailleur replacements each year, with their derailleur drivetrains. So far with the Rohloff there has been zero maintenance (apart from cleaning), with the chain and sprocket wear still close to immeasurable. And the riding I do is demanding... from day one when I installed the Rohloff, the bike has been ridden hard, fast and certainly pushed to my limits. So I remain impressed with both the Specialized Turbo Levo Expert and the Rohloff's performance on an eMtb. Thanks to Rohloff AG and Just Ride at Nerang.

04.01.2022 Out on the weekend racing Round-2 of the Queensland Sunshine Mtb Series. 2 out of 2 eMtb category wins now for my Rohloff converted Specialized Turbo Levo Comp. I now have 600 kms of trail riding and racing with the Rohloff fiited. Chain wear is now only just measurable... very close to a new chain measurement (minimal). The front chainring has a little wear (tooth deformation), but this was noted when we first fitted the Rohloff as a result of just 2 weeks riding with the or...iginal derailleur system (no further deterioration to date). All in all, the drive system shows no visible wear since the Rohloff was first installed, and this has been confirmed by measurement. The past 600 kms has included some seriously tough testing up and down the steepest hills, across some of the rockiest trails, jumps, dropouts, both dry and muddy conditions, races and typical trail abuse. Only 600kms so far... but the Rohloff and the drive train is as good as when it was fitted. Talking with other eMtb riders and local bike shops over the past couple of months, I now have some good representative feedback for eMtb drive train wear. As a general expectation, eMtb'ers with derailleur drive trains can expect around 500-1500 kms before drive train components require replacement. Obviously that depends on the rider, the bike and the riding environment... and some owners are getting better drive train life, whilst others have told me they have replaced 3-5 chains a year and a couple of cassettes. Im not sure what life we will get from the eMtb Rohloff chain and sprockets, but I would expect double or triple that of a derailleur system. Im hoping possibly 3000 kms... but its an eBike and its ridden in a mountain biking environment - so lets see. 600 kms without any noticeable wear is a good start. Rohloff Just Ride

03.01.2022 A short video of the riding we did recently on Tasmania's north west coast. We did some exploring in areas that had very little by way of tracks or trails... perfect for eMtbs as you were not concerned about exploring a new track which may go nowhere, and great for the Rohloffs - some of the tracks were overgrown just waiting to devour a derailleur :-). Great riding... magical scenery and a beautiful coastline. https://youtu.be/3kW5A5dJwIA

03.01.2022 Our latest Rohloff Conversion, just 2 days ago. A Merida E160-800. The customer had damaged his rear derailleur and was looking for an alternative... something better for gear changing, and something that didn't need constant tuning and adjustment. Peter did a lot of research which resulted with only one choice for him... the Rohloff. So on our recent travels to Tasmania, we met up with Peter and measured his Merida for an A12 Rohloff Speedhub. On the way back we collected hi...s bike to carry out the Rohloff conversion and some minor tweaking to improve the overall ride... CushCore to both tyres, cable length adjustments and general tidy up of the handlebar cockpit. To say we had a happy customer here would be an understatement. We took Peter out for a test ride on our local trails, when he came to collect his bike. When asked how was he finding the gearing... it was a simple "Perfect... so quick". It took Peter no time to adjust to the Rohloff gear shifting and he absolutely loves his new Speedhub. The photo below from my GoPro on the ride captures a very pleased Peter, after climbing a steep and loose fire road hill at Daisy Hill (south of Brisbane).

03.01.2022 "No more clunking, crashing sounds with gear changes..." Since I published my Specialized Levo-Rohloff conversion video 4 months ago, it has had 10,000 views around the globe. That's the good news... with that exposure comes lots of questions back from eBike owners wanting to do a similar Rohloff conversion. One such person was a Dr. John Falconer from British Columbia, in Canada. His bike was a 2019 Specialized Turbo Como 5.0, which is an eBike commuter. Whilst I initially a...ssisted Dr.Falconer, I recommended he work with Rohloff in Canada and by John's feedback... Canada's distributor, Alan Wu, "was super to work with". John sent these photos to me to share with others, saying "Just thought I would let you know that my Turbo Como is now sporting a new Rohloff hub. I love it". He also mentioned what I had expected... "No more clunking, crashing sounds with gear changes..." See more

02.01.2022 An interesting Speedhub service and repair we just completed. The hub was purchased back in 2008... 13 years old, 13 years of use. This Speedhub was installed onto a tandem mtb and fitted with alloy drive pins, for the additional torque requirement generated by two riders. The drive pins had not sheared, but had worn down as they rubbed against the metal edge of the ring gear. After investigation, as this is a very rare issue, the primary transmission factor was confirmed ok... at 2.5. Apparently the first generation Speedhubs (with aluminum pins fitted) could experience damage to the large plastic ring gear with very high torque loads... eg. two riders on a tandem. This is the probable cause. Rohloff decided to provide a new internal gear unit as a "courtesy repair" offer to the owner (the original owner of the registered Speedhub). We also replaced the main bearings and seals as part of the overhaul and repair. Rohloff's support of their product never ceases to amaze me... it is exceptional.

02.01.2022 Chains. We are regularly asked... what's the best chain for the Rohloff Speedhub? And this has become more so with the rising popularity of eBikes. A good quality 'derailleur' chain is recommended as these chains are designed for high-mileage systems (as opposed to the strong, but relatively faster wearing single-speed chains). Rohloff recommends an 8 or 9 speed chain as these have actual protruding pins, so they can be safely riveted together with the Rohloff Revolver tool. ...The 8/9 speed chains are also becoming cheaper and cheaper due to derailleur systems using narrower chains for the current 10, 11 and 12 speed drivetrains. This is a very interesting article just published by Velonews, by Lennard Zinn on January 30, 2020. https://www.velonews.com//we-went-to-germany-to-test-the-m

02.01.2022 Racing today at Mt Crosby, 20 kms west of Brisbane. Round 4 of the Qld State Series (mountain bike cross country racing). 5 laps of a 5.4km race loop... great natural Aussie single track. And that's the series tied up for the 2019 eBike category. 4 races, 4 wins and not one issue with the Rohloff or any of the drivetrain. The whole Rohloff experiment with the eMtbs has been very successful. 1,200 kms now of some serious riding and racing - I've been purposely pushing hard and... riding fast... riding trails from northern NSW to north of Brisbane and west to Ipswich. Still using the original chain, derailleur, sprocket and chainring, with little to no measurable wear on any component. And I am always asked about the Rohloff on race days - some who have never seen a Rohloff before and the eBikers with their feedback on rapid drivetrain wear (and damage) with cassettes, chains and derailleurs. The Rohloff is an expensive upgrade... but so is 2-3-4 drive train replacements a year (that varies from rider to rider and eMtb to eMtb, but the feedback is consistent). Awesome trails and venue today at Mt Crosby, thanks to the Kenmore club for the trail prep and hosting the event, and others that helped and supported the event to make it a great success. 01.01.2022 My Rohloff eMtb 1000km Inspection. Thought it was time and an appropriate numbers of kms ridden to open up the Rohloff to inspect the internals. My main interest was to check the 9 nylon drive rollers/pins which are designed to shear to protect the gear unit from damage, in the situation where it is overloaded. I have purposely really pushed the whole Rohloff-Levo setup to the extremes, climbed some hills which I could never ride up under normal pedal power... weight over the... front and it just keeps on climbing. I am amazed at what this bike will climb! The result of the 1000km Inspection: zero marking found on any of the 9 shear rollers and everything else looks perfect and as it should be. So far zero maintenance, with the chain and sprocket wear still close to immeasurable. Note: please do not disassemble your Rohloff Speedhub like I have shown here, as you will likely void your warranty. I am both Rohloff trained and authorised to do this.
