20.01.2022 SPOILER ALERT!!! Tradies’ discrimination in Passengers (2016) Even a toddler nowadays is aware about the discrimination, and brainstorming about the existing types of discrimination never stops (there is even boldness discrimination, ginger discrimination, name discrimination, discrimination based on physical attractiveness etc). But when you type in tradies' discrimination in Google, it looks like such a phenomenon does not quite exist. Instead, there is an amount of texts... with headlines like What to do when tradies stuff up, Resolving disputes with your tradie, Tradies: lazy or just bad at business? ... Meanwhile, this discrimination does exist (and those headlines are one of its evidences). In Passengers (2016), this problem is very well demonstrated. There is a huge spaceship heading to a new planet to start a new civilization. 5000 people are on board sleeping in their hibernation pods. Some are passengers who paid big amounts of money for their tickets. Aurora, a Nobel Prize winner’s daughter, is one of them. She is travelling in first class and lives in a luxurious cabin with a huge pool looking up into the open space. Some are crew, like Jim, mechanical engineer, who does not have all these privileges because he is just a tradesman in demand. He is the one who finally fixes all the troubles on board and saves lives of these 5000 people using his hands (and his brain!). But all along the movie we can’t help facing this unfair and ridiculous disrespect towards simple people. It happens when we see how different the conditions of their travelling on board are. It happens when Aurora mentions that a woman like her and a man like him would never be together in other circumstances. And when Gus comments that Jim is too lucky to be the only person awaken in such a company as Aurora. By the way, this Gus is the third and the last actor in the movie, he is an African American, and he is a chief deck officer (well, like there was any doubt!). Even though he only woke up for a couple of hours and did nothing else but giving a wise piece of advice before he died (you have to fix this problem!), all his rights were respected in full So why are tradies at the bottom of the society opinion? Why is it so cool to be a doctor, a teacher, a chief deck officer or even a Nobel Prize Winner’s daughter or wife, and it really sucks if you are a tradie? Aren’t all the issues that people sometimes face when dealing with tradies (often causing legal disputes) based on these biases and the fact that their important work and role in our society is undervalued? The problem is, nobody expects a tradie to be smart and cool, and expectations of others affect behavior. So, let’s break the vicious circle and treat tradies as first class passengers because we are all in the same boat, and they are the ones who built it! Olga Korlevic

10.01.2022 A king, a businessman and a builder met the devil at the gates to hell. - You can make one phone call, but you’d have to pay for it, the devil said. The king made a quick 5-minutes call, asked who the new ruler of the kingdom was and how people were feeling about these changes. He was assured that everything was fine and hung up with relief. - This call will cost you $100,000, the devil said. The businessman was the next, he talked for 2 minutes, asked about his company, ...how things were, made sure everything was ok, and hung up with a satisfied smile. - This call will cost you $1,000,000, the devil said. The builder dialed a number and talked for 6 hours Workers quit the job, sub-contractors didn’t finish the job properly and left the site messy, clients are whinging, deadline is over, certifiers are picking on details, insurance costs raised twice in price, banks are refusing the loan, homeowners want to change half of the house for free, tax is too high, work is not being done because of the rain, regulations have changed again - How much do I owe you? he asked the devil after he finished, in a desperate exhaustion. - Nothing, - the devil replies. - But why? How can it be so? the king and the businessman exclaimed together. He talked so much longer than we did! The devil explained: - Calls from hell to hell are free of charge as they are under domestic roaming. See more

07.01.2022 In England, it is not uncommon to see "wavy" brick walls. Interestingly, the design uses fewer bricks than a straight wall. A straight wall that is just one bri...ck thick is not sturdy enough to stand alone & can be easily toppled, so they generally have a thickness of at least two or more layers of bricks, & are also reinforced at regular intervals with vertical posts serving as buttresses. But a wavy "one-brick" wall stands just fine on its own due to the arch support provided by its shape, which combines both wall & buttress. Such a structure is called a "crinkle crankle wall" "the Old English version of "zig zag." See more
