24.01.2022 How are you feeling after the 60mm of rain we recently received?? At ease?? Complacent?? Thinking we’re done with the bushfire season?? Maybe time for the pub?? The forecast shows that summer is not done with temperatures in the mid to late 30’s all next week, drying the landscape out once again.... Statistically speaking, the longer we go without a major fire, the closer we get to one occurring. The one thing you must have is a plan. Confusion, doubt and uncertainty creeps in during stressful situations and that’s the last thing you want during an emergency. Make a plan today, https://mybushfireplan.wa.gov.au P.S. the Department of Fire and Emergency Services WA 3rd busiest day for 000 calls was in June. Just let that sink in....

23.01.2022 To the Roleystone/Karragullen and wider community, Thank you to those who came to the corporate service meeting at the City of Armadale chambers on 22/06/2021 and provided unprecedented support to your volunteer fire brigade. For the those who we able to hear the comments made by the City, you will recall the CEO stated that the management committees request for the BFB management be handed to DFES was done with no notice of motion being put forward. Whilst the Brigade is ...disappointed that the City failed to refer this matter back to management, we have reviewed our Brigade Constitution (recognised by State Government)which does not establish the need for a "notice of motion" referred to by the CEO. Additionally the brigade has also reviewed the City of Armadale ‘Bush Fire Brigade Local Laws’ and these laws do not establish this as an obligation, in fact they confirm our motion was valid. The extract of the laws states, 5.1(3) "Business may be conducted at an ordinary meeting of the bush fire brigade notwithstanding that it was not specified in a notice given under subclause (1) in relation to that meeting." All our meetings are already run in compliance with the subclause (1) referenced. This means the motion and vote to separate from the City of Armadale stands valid. The brigade will follow this up with City directly. The Brigade thanks Mayor Ruth Butterfield and Councillor Caroline Wielinga for their time and consultation prior to the Corporate Services Committee meeting. In addition, the Brigade stands in support of the recommendation made by Councillor Grant Nixon that the City of Armadale seek further consultation with the Department of Fire and Emergency Services Commissioner Darren Klemm AFSM in this matter. Whilst Tuesday night’s meeting has not resolved the concern of the brigade we see this as a positive step forward. Thank you again for your support. #onecommunityonebrigade

23.01.2022 How Fireproof is your plan?? Everyone knows the risk bushfires pose every year. Too often the Facebook community groups light up as soon as smoke, sirens and choppers fill the air wanting to know where the fire is but a majority are not prepared.... You don’t want to be the next statistic... Head to https://mybushfireplan.wa.gov.au or download the app. (P.S. Our Community Engagement Team can help with any questions you have.)

23.01.2022 As most residents would have noticed today there was a mix of the smell of smoke and sirens in the air, signalling the approach of summer. Whilst our brigade is currently supporting the City of Gosnells Volunteer Bush Fire Brigade at this incident, this is a timely reminder that the Prohibited Burning Period is just over a week away. You need to ensure that you and your family are prepared this summer as bushfires can happen at any time, in any place. Asking for advice on fa...cebook is NOT a plan. Make sure you have a plan this summer. Head to www.firechat.wa.gov.au before it’s too late. https://www.facebook.com/1017436634965331/posts/4683596981682593/?d=n

22.01.2022 Winter is wet. And yes, the risk of bushfires is minimal... But it also means you can't be complacent. Winter is storm season and brings other challenges to your property. Preparing for storms is much like preparing for bushfire. ... Keeping gutters clean, trim overhanging branches, pack an emergency kit and have an alternative relocation place. Certainly sounds familiar..!! If you have damage from a storm that is too great to handle, ring the WA State Emergency Service on 132 500. This short video from our colleagues at Department of Fire and Emergency Services WA explains how easy it can be. Make the most of lockdown!! (P.S. remember to stay 8 metres from any fallen powerline and always treat them as live..!!)

20.01.2022 February 6, 2011. A devastating day for our community and one that many will not forget. 72 houses were lost and a further 37 were damaged.... Today marks 10 years since the Roleystone/Kelmscott fire ripped through our community in what could be described as some horrendous localised weather conditions. Those similar conditions have been seen over the last week and many times already this summer. After a couple of quiet seasons, the 2020/21 bushfire season has so far been a big one. Numerous large fires have occurred and many great saves have happened. But sadly, this week broke the trend with the loss of 86 houses from a beast that could not be tamed. Since the 2011 Roleystone/Kelmscott fire, there has been 57 houses lost in the 2014 Parkerville fire and 181 houses lost in the 2016 Waroona/Yarloop fire. Now 86 in the current 2021 Wooroloo fire. And with all that has been learnt from the past, houses still get lost. Why?? Because people’s attitudes still remain the same. Time and time again we see comments like: - We didn’t think it would get here that fast. - I was prepared but I didn’t think the fire would be that intense. - Why are we doing controlled burns when wildfires start anyway? - We just need bigger aircraft to stop fires. Sadly, most amongst our community understand the risk bushfires have but only a few will do anything about it. Local Facebook groups are quick to light up whenever a fire occurs as people seek information but still there is the elephant in the room. - Too many unprepared properties with high fuel loads. Coupled with no written fire plan, this presents a recipe for disaster.... Both our brigade’s Operations Team and Community Engagement Team are constantly working hard to provide the safest community possible. This hard work was recognised last year with the brigade receiving some of the most prestigious team firefighting awards possible in the state. But we can’t do it alone... The City of Armadale is at extreme risk of bushfire and the constant threat will be there without everyone doing their part. Even if your plan is to leave, you still need to prepare your property. Your property could be the weak link in the chain. If you need help with your preparations, our Community Engagement Team can assist questions you may have. Start by making your bushfire plan. NOW. https://mybushfireplan.wa.gov.au taken by various Roleystone crews at the Wooroloo Incident.

19.01.2022 With the wet weather drawing in, it is a stark contrast to what has occurred this week. At 1202hrs on Monday the 1st, a fire was reported in Wooroloo. The events that transpired led to an emergency warning spanning several local government districts and lasting for several days. Welcome news that this incident has been downgraded and fingers crossed substantial rainfall occurs.... Just a few hours later, the Roleystone VFRS Urban Pump and Light Tanker were requested to form part of a strike team. A short time later, the Roleystone BFB Light Tanker was requested for an additional strike team. These appliances then stayed at the incident until being released at midday today. A total of 1150 personnel hours over 11 shifts. A mammoth effort to help fellow West Australians. Whilst a huge effort from our firefighters, it’s also thanks to their families for the sacrifice of having their loved one gone for extended periods of time. We wish the affected communities a speedy recovery and our thoughts are with those homeowners who have lost their homes. Donate to the Lord Mayor’s Distress Relief Fund at https://appealswa.org.au

18.01.2022 So, I moustache you a question. Have you or someone you know been affected by a health issue?? Chances are, the answer is yes. ... As tough as us blokes think we are, we are all vulnerable and will experience health issues during our lives. This could take the form of cancer, mental health or suicide - which is the single biggest killer amongst males. This year, 10 of the brigade’s finest have stepped up to the challenge to make a change in men’s health, by signing up to Movember. Help us raise awareness for men’s health by donating to our team at: https://movember.com/t/Roleystone-volunteer-fire-brigade I never liked the idea of having a moustache.. But then it grew on me.

17.01.2022 Every year, all firefighters who hold Breathing Apparatus qualifications in Western Australia must undertake the annual refresher to keep their BA qualification current. Monday night saw the first group of RVFB firefighters undertake their refresher. Not only does the refresher reinforce the basic skills but firefighters also learn the new processes or skills that have been released since the previous refresher.... Whilst this year’s refresher was not as elaborate as the last, it’s certainly a good time to sharpen the skills such as the Mayday Drag and buddy breathing. Definitely two skill sets we hope not to use..!! Volunteer Fire & Rescue Services Association of WA Inc

10.01.2022 There’s a new kid on the Emergency WA block! DFES and the Department of Health (HealthyWA) have partnered to customise the Emergency WA website (www.emergency.w...a.gov.au) to include map-based ‘human pandemic’ warnings if they’re needed. The website is now equipped to show localised outbreaks of COVID-19 and provide targeted information to communities impacted. While we hopefully don’t have to use it, this enhancement is part of the WA Government preparation for potential outbreaks of COVID-19 in WA. To help keep the community safe, remember to: Practise good hygiene and wash your hands regularly. Maintain a physical distance from others where possible. Stay home if you’re sick. If you’re experiencing symptoms, get tested immediately. Stay home and self-isolate if you are waiting for your test results.
