23.01.2022 Did you know today is Glynis Johns' birthday? Undoubtedly most widely known for her brilliant portrayal of Mrs Banks in Mary Poppins, she also created the Tony Award winning role of Desiree Armfeldt in the original production of the Sondheim musical A Little Night Music. The most famous song from that show, Send in the Clowns, was specifically written for her voice. She is also currently the oldest living nominee for an Academy Award for acting.

21.01.2022 Did you know that on this day in 1983 the original production of A Chrous Line staged its 3,389th performance? This made it the longest running Broadway show at the time, breaking the record held by Grease, and before that Fiddler on the Roof. It would eventually reach over 6,000 performances. It lost the record years later to Cats, and then Phantom of the Opera, making it the last American show to hold the record.

21.01.2022 Did you know the original production of West Side Story opened on this day in 1957? With music by Leonard Bernstein, and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, the show ran for 732 performances. It was filmed in 1961, and went on to win 10 Academy Awards, including Best Picture. A new film version, directed by Stephen Spielberg, was filmed last year and is due to be released sometime in 2021.

20.01.2022 Did you know today is the 70th Anniversary of the publication of the first Charlie Brown comic strip? The long-running comic strip has been the source for two different musicals: You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown, and Snoopy! The Musical. It was the 1999 Broadway revival of You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown that earned Kristin Chenoweth and Roger Bart their Tony Awards, for playing Sally Brown and Snoopy.

17.01.2022 (I've been looking forward to this one) Did you know today is the 56th anniversary of the original Broadway production of Fiddler on the Roof? The first Broadway musical to run for over 3,000 performances, and the longest running Broadway musical for about 10 years until overtaken by Grease. The original cast included Zero Mostel, Bea Arthur, and Austin Pendleton.... Admin - Paul T

16.01.2022 Can you spare an hour or so to help us do some much-needed fundraising? We are booked in at the Armadale Central shopping centre (Big W shops) on Saturday 10th October, from 10am to 4pm, to sell our Bendigo Bank raffle tickets to the public. We would love a hand, so if you can help please comment below and I’ll then message you the link for the roster poll (so you can indicate what times you might be able to cover). ... The Bendigo Bank Roleystone Karragullen branch raffle has a first prize of $20 000 cash and all funds from tickets sold go straight to our Theatre group! An hour of your time would be worth so much to the group in what has been a rough couple of years financially with COVID-19 an extra challenge on top! Thank you so much, Bree (President - Roleystone Theatre)

16.01.2022 An interesting read about the future of the arts in Australia.

15.01.2022 Did you know that today is Dame Julie Andrews' 85th birthday? While probably most famous for playing Mary Poppins and Maria von Trapp on film, she also created the roles of Eliza Dolittle in My Fair Lady and Guinevere in Camelot in their Broadway premieres. When they made the film of My Fair Lady, the role went to Audrey Hepburn instead, because Julie was not then a big enough name. Julie went on to make Mary Poppins instead. In her acceptance speech after she won the Oscar for Mary Poppins (beating Audrey Hepburn's Eliza Dolittle) she famously thanked Jack L. Warner for NOT casting her as Eliza Dolittle. Happy birthday, Dame Julie!

13.01.2022 Did you know today is Damon Runyon's birthday? He would have been 140 today. Primarily a short story writer, there have been a number of films based on his stories, including Little Miss Marker and Lady for a Day (remade as Pocketful of Miracles). In 1950 a couple of his stories were turned into the musical Guys and Dolls. The musical won that year's Tony Awards, and was selected as the winner of the 1950 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, but because one of the writers had Communist sympathies, the board of trustees vetoed its selection and chose to not award a prize that year. Happy Birthday, Damon Runyon!

11.01.2022 Did you know today is the anniversary of the premiere of David Mamet's play Glengarry Glen Ross? It opened at the National Theatre in London on 21 September 1983, and went on to win the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. (If you want a beautifully Australian send up of it, search Glengarry Glenn Ridge)

09.01.2022 Did you know today is the 68th anniversary of the first performance of Agatha Christie's The Mousetrap? It currently holds the record for the longest continuous run of any play in history, running on the West End from November 1952 until March this year. We may feel a little sorry for Edward Small, who bought the film rights to the play under the proviso he could not make the film until 6 months after the West End production closed.
