22.01.2022 This here is Brian. You've probably never seen a picture of him on our feed, but he is an integral part of the farm. Without Brian coming every Thursday since the farm has begun here in Harvey, it would have been a steep learning curve full of many more errors learning how to mechanise our farming. Brian is our fix it guy, he maintains all of our machinery and makes sure he says hello and goodbye to everyone on the farm every single day, with a smile on his face and a posit...ive attitude to boot. Today he setup our new boom sprayer and has locked in the weekly foliar feed and dipel for all of our brassica crops, as the cabbage and diamondback moths come out in full force during this time of the year. On ya Brian, thanks for being a legend. #grownwithlove #grownwithcommunity @ Harvey, Western Australia

21.01.2022 A quick crash course on the pruning and trellising of our little tomato plants, so that Dec can take the reigns tomorrow and smash it out in the greenhouse whilst the sky delivers us more of this delicious rain. We're keeping it simple this year. Two leaders. Terminate suckers. Prune off any leaves touching the ground. And next plant! For market gardeners out there, we can't recommend highly enough this vineyard tape trelliser our neighbours Richard and Graeme gave us. They r...equire staples and tape, but they are so quick to use, and they also remove any risk of damaging the plant that can happen when just trellising with twine. Happy week ahead, everyone! #marketgardening #marketgarden #tomatoes #trellis #growveg # #knowyourfarmer #knowyourfood

19.01.2022 This handsome fellow left the farm this weekend, and my what an impact he made! Louis has been stuck on solid ground in Australia since the plans for the boat he has been working on were put on hiatus due to COVID. We lucked and out and have had the pleasure of having him stay with us for the past couple of weeks. He got the call last week and now he is finally off to begin his journey to the Antarctic. With Mel transitioning to full time off farm work, the job list before ...summer hits its stride was a little overwhelming to say the least. So many jobs are 3 or 4 times easier with another person, not to mention the moral boost from sharing your days working with other like minded people and being able to reflect and problem solve together. It was humbling and settling being able to share my days with someone else, who is respectful, hard working, earnest and a critical thinker. Our space was filled with laughter and the bubbling of excitement, and it reminded me how important community is in all of this. Without good people around, your days can feel a whole lot longer and devoid of perspective. We gotta whoooole lot of plants in the ground, ACTUALLY cleaned and organised most of the shed and got a decent start on building the second greenhouse. Thanks for choosing to spend a little chunk of life here Louis. I swear soon I will learn a few proper knots rather than just tying lots. #grownwithlove #grownwithcommunity @ Roly Poly Farm

15.01.2022 The story of spring and summer Never ending transplants; successions of little plant babies going in the ground on schedule to ensure (never goes to plan) a consistent harvest. I feel like all I do is prep and turnover beds and plant at the moment. These melons are the last transplants before we begin direct sowing this week now that our soil has well and truly warmed up. Saves time, effort, and ensures a much healthier root system and more vigorous plant. ... Sometimes ya just can't wait for melons though, so early transplants are our jam :) #grownwithlove

11.01.2022 Getting a bit steamy in the broad beans this arvo #mustbelove

08.01.2022 It's this fabulous farmers 28th birthday today! He's on his way to meet me at the beach, where I've got a big bottle-a bubbly and some fish and chips waiting for him, so wish him a happy birthday below as a big surprise for when he gets here! Dec, you're a 7163829/10, and I wouldn't have you any other way! Thanks for carrying the farm load these past few weeks, and I'm so excited for the year ahead, when hopefully we find you some headphones you don't lose ... #happybirthdaydec #happybirthday #farmersgettingold

08.01.2022 Another big day of transplanting yesterday! We have refined the system and even with raking out the beds by hand to reduce the amount of residue that gets caught in the mechanical transplanter and blocks it up, we got 6000 plants in the ground using a total of 1140 person minutes for the whole process (Louis and Sheralee rocked the transplanter yesterday). That is 11 seconds per transplant (whole process, not just the actual transplanting), which is a metric we can use goin...g forwards as we track how we are going with improvements in the process such as adding a Coulter blade in front of the transplanting shoe so we can hopefully retain our precious organic matter on the beds rather than raking it into the pathways (a trade off we have had to make in order for the system to work). The raking even acted to give the beds one final weeding which is an added bonus!! This week rounds out a bunch of prep for summer, as I begin supplying Gathered Organics next week. Roma tomatoes and Piel de Sapo melons in the ground today, a couple of days to work on the greenhouse and then the harvest schedule begins again!! #grownwithlove #andwithfriends

08.01.2022 We take our social media seriously around here . Those watching would have noticed Sir Farmer Dec of Social Media has taken to the Roly Poly stories with guns a-blazing, but we're yet to see some posting actio . Now that the formalities are done with, keep your eyes peeled. This week has been a bit of a stress-bomb for him, so let's not be too harsh, but...just some gentle nudging ... . In other news, I'm on-farm today Time to get stuck into some harvest! . #marketgarden #harvest #knowyourfarmer See more

03.01.2022 Cover crop in our about to be finished second greenhouse is pumping. The next two weeks are blocked off primarily for me to finish building this so we can plant successions of summer crops into the cooler months. . The oats are a dark, thick, sharp and luscious head high sea of green. These lovely plants have been covering the soil and filling it with living roots, which in turns proliferates biological life underground. . The aim is to rotate through the two houses, cover... cropping them once a year so we can keep that diversity and carbon cycling in the soil. It is a magical thing setting the stage for nature to run its course . #carboncycle #covercrops See more
