22.01.2022 Let us just take a moment to appreciate what a super pony this guy is. Remaining completely calm even though I saw he did see the wild loose horse hurtling past mid test! He very much kept his cool and I was able to carry on and complete my whole test with no distraction. ... 10/10 good boy!

19.01.2022 How a horsewoman knows she is rich: I am rich. I have $15 in my checking account and a golden mare in the barn. I am rich. I have a car that mostly works and en...ough gas to get to the barn every day this week. I am rich. I have boxes of pasta and generic sauce in my pantry and enough hay to feed my horse through the winter. I am rich. I have enough old coats and sweaters to layer up and stay warm while I do barn chores. I am rich. I vacation by camping with my horses and going to cheer on my horse riding friends at horse shows. Sometimes I even play too, and spend $1000 to bring home a fifty cent ribbon that I will treasure more than a photo in front of the Eiffel Tower. I am rich. I have tools: duct tape and baling twine and the know how to fix just about anything with these tools. I am rich. I find joy in making my own things, making do, and making right. I have a 30 year old saddle, a 50 year old body, and the wonder and joy of a 6 year old child learning that a horse can give her wings. I am rich. My wealth is not measured in dollar signs but in horsey snorts and nickers. My riches aren't spent on electronics and fancy clothes but are shared with my human and four footed friends. Next time someone finds out that I have a horse and says, " You must be rich to afford that" I will smile, and agree. 18.01.2022 Thank you Oscar for being such a wonderfully fun partner in crime this weekend! First proper event of the year and also the last for 2020. So not a bad way to do it 5th place in the EVA60 class... Back in his paddock this evening with a hard earned, albeit late dinner. And I reckon a day off or two for this guy. Super proud of him today. 3 phases and pretty darn perfect if you ask me. Good boy Oscar!! Thanks for trusting me with your beautiful man @rubyhalloran.aus

18.01.2022 Agistment available in Abermain We are currently setting up a new equestrian facility in Abermain (between Cessnock and Kurri) Our agistment package includes a large private paddock for your horse with brand new, safe equine fencing. ... Feeding and rugging as required twice daily (you to supply feed) Waters regularly monitored Current facilities include large 50x50m riding space, jumping equipment, round yard, feed shed, shared tack room with designated area including saddle racks and shelving. The property is surrounded by endless trails. Perfect for a casual ride out or fitness work. We are actively making improvements to the property, in coming months we will have a new shed built which will include stables, tack room, wash bay, kitchenette/bathroom etc. Also on the list of jobs is a new dressage arena with lights, as well as shelters for the paddocks. We are offering agistment at a temporary price of $70 per week per horse. This will increase incrementally as we make further improvements to facilities. (Always with fair warning) Please get in touch to discuss. We will have limited places available as we don't want to run a busy equestrian centre, but rather create a small but close community of like minded people to enjoy the space together.

15.01.2022 What is the longest a horse can safely go without food? More and more I see horses and ponies stood for long periods of time with no hay or haylage. Usually un...der the guise of a weight control diet. So how long can a horse be without food before damage is done? And what damage is done? For those with a short attention span, I’ll give you the answer to begin with - 4 hours, maximum. Why? Horses are grazers. They are designed to eat constantly. They have no way of storing their acids and digestive enzymes, they’ve never needed to. They have no gall bladder to store bile and their stomachs release acid constantly, whether or not there is food in the stomach and intestines. A horses stomach only holds approximately 8-15 litres. Depending on the substance eaten, it takes on average 4-6 hours for the stomach to completely empty. After this, the acids and enzymes start to digest the inside of the horses stomach and then the intestines. This causes both gastric and intestinal ulceration. It has been estimated that 25-50% of foals and 60-90% of adult horses suffer from ulceration. But I won’t go into detail about this, there is a lot of information around about ulcers. So is that it? Are ulcers the only concern? No, having an empty stomach is a stress situation for a horse. The longer they are starved, the more they release stress hormones, cortisol predominantly. Cortisol blocks insulin and causes a constantly high blood glucose level. This stimulates the body to release even more insulin, and in turn this causes fat tissue to be deposited and leptin resistance. Over time this causes insulin resistance (Equine Metabolic Syndrome). All of these mechanisms are well known risk factors for laminitis and are caused by short term starvation (starting roughly 3-4 hours after the stomach empties). Starving a laminitic is literally the worst thing you can do. Over longer periods, this also starts to affect muscle and can cause weakness, and a lack of stamina so performance horses also need a constant supply of hay/haylage to function optimally. Let’s not forget horses are living, breathing and feeling animals. We talk about this stress reaction like it’s just internal but the horse is well aware of this stress. Door kicking, box walking, barging and many other stable vices and poor behaviour can be explained by a very stressed horse due to food deprivation (we all have that Hangry friend to explain this reaction). Next time you shout or hit a horse that dives for their net, remember their body is genuinely telling them they are going to starve to death. They know no different. But surely they spend the night asleep so they wouldn’t eat anyway? Not true. Horses only need 20mins REM sleep every 24 hours (jealous? I am!). They may spend a further hour or so dozing but up to 22-23 hours a day are spent eating. So if you leave your horse a net at 5pm and it’s gone by 8pm, then by 12am their stomach is empty. By 4am they are entering starvation mode. By their next feed at 8am, they are extremely stressed, physically and mentally. Now I know the cob owners are reading this mortified. I can almost hear you shouting at your screen if I feed my horse ad lib hay he won’t fit out the stable door in a week!! I will say that a horse with a constant supply of hay/haylage will eat far less then the same horse that is intermittently starved. They don’t eat in a frenzy, reducing the chance of colic from both ulcers and over eating. Cobs included. However I’m not suggesting you sit your cob in front of a bale of haylage and say have at it! There is a difference between ad lib and a constant supply. There is much we can do to reduce calorie intake and control weight whilst feeding a constant supply. The easiest is small holes nets. There are many. Trickle nets, greedy feeders, nibbleze, trawler nets etc. My personal favourite is the Shires Soft Mesh 1. They don’t cost the Earth, they are easy to fill and they don’t have knots so are much gentler to the teeth. Now often I suggest these types of nets to owners and the owner tells me Oh no, *** won’t eat out of those this is nonsense. If he was left it, he would. Remember, you can give a normal net and one of these for them to nibble at after. Better than leaving them with nothing at all. A few other tricks, hang the net from the ceiling/rafters, it’s harder to eat out of a net that swings. Soak the hay, a minimum of 4 hours to be effective. Mix with straw but be sure to introduce the straw slowly and make sure it’s top quality and a palatable type eg Barley or Oat, otherwise they won’t eat it. Don’t forget exercise. The best way to get weight off a horse is exercise. Enough exercise and they can eat what they want! And lay off the bucket feed and treats! Horses on a diet require a vit/min supplement in the form of a balancer but that’s it. The odd slice of carrot or suede won’t do any harm but no licks, treats, treacle, molasses, cereal based rubbish. Even if it says low sugar or the marvellously misleading No added sugar! Your horse would rather have a constant supply of hay, I promise. Written by Vikki Fowler BVetMed BAEDT MRCVS A few edits for the critics- Firstly, feeding a constant supply does not mean ad lib feeding. It means use some ingenuity and spread the recommended amount of daily forage so the horse is never stood with out food for more than 4 hours. I am not promoting obesity, quite the opposite, feeding like this reduces obesity and IR. This can be done whilst feeding your horse twice a day as most horse owners do. Just think outside the box for your own situation. Secondly I am in the UK and this post is UK specific, use some common sense when reading. Yes in warmer climates, soaking hay for 4 hours is dangerous and studies show 1 hour is plenty in hot weather but in the UK’s arctic climate, a minimum of 4 hours is required. Equally the UK feed exclusively grass hay. I can not comment on other types. Thirdly, yes every horse/pony and situation is different, but this is a law of nature and all horses have this anatomy and metabolism. How you achieve this constant supply is individual, the need for it is not. Fourthly, the use of hay nets in the UK is very very high. I’d estimate 95% of horses I see are fed this way and very very few have incisor wear or neck/back issues as a result. Yes, feeding from the ground is ideal, but a constant supply, I feel trumps this. Again with ingenuity both can be safely achieved. Finally, straw can be fed to horses safely, introduced very slowly, with fresh water always available, plus a palatable and digestible type of straw which will depend on your area. Again many horses in the UK are bedded on straw and most of them eat it. This is not a new concept to us.

11.01.2022 Lovely ride out on the first sunny day in a while. First time we've seen the creek flowing, very brave ponies.

10.01.2022 What a little champ! Oscar and I had a ball up at Tamworth yesterday competing in the Hillgrange Equestrian EVA60 class He felt great in his dressage and definitely becoming more and more comfortable in there, so with a little more training, it won't be long before he starts getting up there in the placings for it. But happy with 64.38% and sitting in 10th out of 23. Then to showjumping, he was foot perfect. Really felt great and got all the striding I had walked and planned.... Becoming really rideable! Clear round! Then out to the cross country, where he seriously just felt at home. Really on the job at every fence and just felt so comfortable and confident. Couple spots where we didn't get the perfect distance. But in what was a fair enough ask for a 60 class, I was stoked with how well we took on the challenge. Taking home 5th place to finish the day. Huge thanks to Hillgrange Equestrian for sponsoring the class. We appreciate the support of our sport! And Oscar looked great with use of your Hairy Pony products! Thanks to my sponsor Silverleaf Equestrian for the ongoing support Thank you @rubyhalloran.aus for trusting me with your little steed, really proud of where he's come to. Thank you Fibregenix Hunter Valley and Fibregenix Australia for providing such wonderful feed balancers that help my horses look and feel amazing. 09.01.2022 So I farewelled Sven on Sunday morning to his new home down the coast. I have really enjoyed working with this horse but had recently come to the decision that he just wasn't going to make an eventer. He is hopefully going to be a great mount for his new owner, doing pleasure riding and some dressage. #sold #hihosilver

07.01.2022 Out to HVSJC today for a training day. Had some really good moments and one majorly not good one I started with a lovely round on Mikhaila's Holly, in the 45-60. Was for a bit of fun and good experience for her and she was just super. Then two super rounds on Oscar in the 60-70 and 70-80. Couple of baby moments, but overall was fantastic and he just keeps improving, really happy with his progress.... Then it was Sven's turn...forever testing me this horse. He was behaving beautifully and actually having one of his best rounds to date. But then found it all a bit much in the double and said a big fat No! So tried as I might, I couldn't quite stick this one. - a bruised tail bone (and possibly ego) as a result. But got back on and he regained some confidence and he jumped a few other fences and came back to the double and he did it beautifully to finish well for the day. 04.01.2022 So somehow I'd kept this guy a bit of a secret. Meet Harvey Birdman, an 8yo off the track TB. I took him on just as we moved house. So he sort of sat in the paddock and I'd had minimal time for him.... But of late I've been having a bit of a play and so far liking him a lot! We ventured out to Willow's Leap for a little cross country schooling with Lyndel and he was really super. I can't wait to see what he can do as his training develops. 04.01.2022 What if I told you I had a secret that will help: improve your dressage scores, get inside knowledge from dressage judges, find out exactly what they are looking for, give you some helpful tools you can take with you and start working on right away to get better marks for your next comp. ... And what's more, it's free!! ... Want to know how? Dressage Pencilling! We all regularly attend dressage or eventing competitions and all have the Privilege of having a volunteer committee put together these days for us. For our sport. What we fail to realise is the extreme lack of riders putting their hand up to help. The facts are simple. We don't have a sport if we don't have volunteers. I spent a few hours recently pencilling at a dressage competition after I'd finished for the day as they were short for helpers. And I'd forgotten how much we can actually learn sitting beside a knowledgeable judge. The conversations went beyond just what was written down on the test sheet, but I was able to pick up many things and started to see more of what they were referring to as each horse came through. It was fantastic! And I am eager to do it again at different levels to learn more and expand my understanding of dressage. I know we are all busy. But if we can find the time to compete, please have the courtesy to donate an hour or so of your time somewhere during the day of the event. You may find you can get a lot more out of it than you think.

04.01.2022 Well thankfully nothing major. But Sven decided on getting choke this afternoon... He recovered quickly and wasnt too bad, will keep a close eye on him over the next few days. They keep you on your toes these horses! Same hay, same tie up spot, same time as normal, added wild wind was about the only change. ... Who knows.... See more
