20.01.2022 A drachm of Ariarathes VII of Cappadocia (116-101 BC) Ariarathes VII Philometor ("mother-loving") inherited the kingdom of Cappadocia from his father Ariarathes VI young and his first years were under the regency of his mother Nysa, who was sister to the aggressive King Mithridates VI of neighbouring Pontus. Mithridates attempted to interfere in Cappadocian affairs, but his sister was no tool for Pontus - instead she married Mithridates' rival, Nicomedes III of Bithynia, who ...invaded Cappadocia to protect Nysa's interests. Mithridates' expelled Nicomedes but his agent in Cappadocia, Gordius, was also the assassin of Ariarathes VI and Ariarathes VII refused to co-operate with his uncle. Before their two armies met, Mithridates arranged a meeting with his nephew, but hid a dagger in his loins, according to the Epitome of Justin. When a Cappadocian servant tried to search the king of Pontus, Mithridates made a quip about his private parts and the embarrassed servant searched no further. Alone with nephew, Mithridates withdrew his dagger and stabbed him, thus winning the kingdom of Cappadocia. His victory, however, was temporary and the dynastic struggle for Cappadocia took many decades and involved Pontus, Bithynia and Rome and the short-lived reigns of three Cappadocian kings. Cappadocia, Ariarathes VII. Silver drachm, 19mm, 4.28gm, issued 110/109 BC. Obv: Diademed head of Ariarathes VII facing right. 06.01.2022 I'd just like to quickly draw the attention of Romanorum's customers and clients to the facebook group Ancient Greek & Roman Coins Australia. This is an Australian based discussion group about coins in gold, silver and bronze issued in the Greek and Roman world (as well matters relating to them, such as books, news and newly discovered items, auctions and results, related events etc). Some of you might already be familiar with the group, but if not, it hosts some very relevant discussions about ancient coin collecting in Australia - I recommend a look. https://www.facebook.com/groups/AncientCoinsAustralia
