25.01.2022 Hello everyone! Sorry have been a bit slack on my page, but I have been very busy this past few weeks, however here is a little tip for you all. The voice must... not be pushed out. You must 'drink' it in - you know yourself if you try to whistle too hard with too much air no sound will come out. Think about it!! See more

16.01.2022 Dear Singers, first of all I want to be able to correct a couple of myths about the breathing. When a singer wants to sing, he wills his voice to do it. I am not going to include the pop singers in this statement, as what they are doing is screaming in the chest register, hence the faces changing colour when they try to get out of the chest voice. Have you ever noticed that all the girls and boys sound exactly the same with a pushed straight sound and no vibrato because their... voices are not free? So I am only going to talk about the classical singers. Too many people today are taught to support their voices by pushing down with their stomach muscles and sqeezing the breath out that way, attempting to place all tones in one particular spot - forward. A lot of teachers call that focus, or placing all tones in the mask. This method is called the "Diaphragmatice drive", it's a method that was made years ago to boost up the vocal chords. Do these people realize (of course they don't) that the throat, the jaw, the back of the tongue all stiffen with that push, as they are trying to force more and more air through their chords? I have just had three more students this week from overseas and each one of them came to me with that method of push- - one of them has had six teachers. This is what has prompted me to write this. Students need to learn that it is the expanded lower ribs that control the return of the diaphragm, but because the lower ribs are slack and weak, they squeeze the breath up with their stomach muscles - not a good practice today, particularly with professional singers. The will to sing causes the chords to close before the breath pressure is applied to them and this creates a head of compressed air from the lungs to form underneath the chords, it's that compressed air that enables the singer to use the minimum amount of breath for the right pressure for each note; it is the same as a petrol tank supplying petrol to the carburettor of a car as needed. Pushing down with your stomach muscles stops all this from happening, the vocal chords try to resist the push with a muscular gripping and eventually the wobble is just around the corner and that is the end of the game. Your diaphragm and ribs know only two things, expansion and relaxation, there should not be any force of any sort. I will post another piece of information tomorrow, until then, happy singing, Ron Lees

09.01.2022 I was unfortunate enough to catch a glimpse the other night of these poor young people trying to 'sing' or 'yell' on the X Factor. This is the reason today why ...music has degenerated to the lowest possible place it can go. These types of shows have completely ruined show business for the professionals and reduced the standard of singing to an all time low - I have a little dog who sings better, and stays in tune. Happy singing! Ron Lees See more
