25.01.2022 Copper Pot House - RDRTE - 2018: At this project, modern-day craftsmanship has invigorated an introverted Californian bungalow, allowing it to engage with the outdoor spaces. The conceptual framework of the house is two-fold: firstly, the aim was to consolidate the spaces within the existing footprint for modern living while creating an outward focus; secondly, the aim was to create a new architectural language that would reinvigorate the rear of the home. The spatial arrange...ment of the rooms improves the quality and character of natural light in the interior and orientates the entertaining spaces so that each one has a direct connection to the outdoors. There is also a new outdoor area that has become an open-air living room with direct access to the new pool. The once-introverted dwelling is now opened up, meaning it can breathe in the landscaped garden. 15.01.2022 Elias House - RDRTE - 2016: The Elias House is a small two storey infill dwelling constructed in the backyard of an existing warehouse. The house is situated in a narrow street in North Fitzroy comprising Victorian row houses and detached cottages, modern infill houses, back fences and garages. The house is an expression of play between the natural elements of terracotta and timber. The two materials interact to form an uneven and textured surface wrapping around the exterior... of the house. The use of terracotta roof tiles in the colours of Delta Sands and Slate Grey pick up on the colour tones present in the brickwork. The combination of brick, terracotta and timber ground the house within the context of the surrounding suburban environment while the vertical proportions align with the adjacent Victorian row houses. The selection of durable natural materials creates a beautiful building envelope that matches the clients brief for a low maintenance dwelling. Simple, cost-effective construction methods were adopted, allowing feature materials to be specified within the project budget. Terracotta tiles were selected for the natural beauty and texture and their enduring colour retention that will maintain the aesthetic of the house for years to come. 15.01.2022 Investing in Quality - RDRTE - 2020: This project involved knocking down the existing dwelling, subdividing the land and building a new home at the front, with two connected duplexes at the rear. A key differentiator of this project is that the homes are Seven Star energy rated and include in-slab hydronic heating. The choice of roof tiles was an important consideration, in terms of making sure everything about the development was of high quality..., as well as in terms of creating the desired exterior aesthetic. Monier Roofing Nullarbor terracotta tiles in Titan, a rich charcoal colour, contrast strongly with the white façade. Combined with A-line ridging, the tiles give the new building a streamlined and contemporary look. The choice of terracotta means that the tiles will not fade, thus providing a strong, contrasting look for decades to come. Inside the main house, quality is also a key focus. There are four separate living zones, which include a basement, and a formal lounge on the ground floor, which features a gas log fire and a detailed cornice. The design was carefully planned and has a unique contemporary feel. Bricks have been used for the exterior, while a wooden door complements the surrounding environment and sandstone features a...round the exterior of the home complete the look. The choice of roof tiles was an important consideration for the overall project, as well as for the exterior aesthetic. The use of Monier Roofing tiles was the perfect choice to withstand changes in temperature and weather conditions. The use of terracotta Nullarbor tiles in Peak helps to create a contemporary look, and the choice of terracotta means that they will not fade, thus providing the contemporary look for decades to come. The use of Nullarbor tiles has a level of restriction based on the roofline pitch; however, additional techniques were carried out to enable the low-pitched front verandah to stay consistent with the overall roof design. 10.01.2022 Jacob Wells - RDRTE - 2018: The dark tile works with the large gutter profile, hinting at an oriental influence, which is mixed into the open tropical design. The different aspects of the roof create many hips and valleys, with a skillion Custom Orb section in the middle, which is the anchor of the home. The layout underneath is a highly articulated design, which dictated the evolution of the roof above. 10.01.2022 Mont Albert - RDRTE - 2018: The roof overhang presented a challenge, but the result appears to be effortless, almost floating in the air. 07.01.2022 Bowral - RDRTE - 2019: This private home is located across the street from the Bradman Museum and International Cricket Hall of Fame in Bowral, New South Wales. The Bradman Oval and Grandstand are heritage-listed items of state significance, and the property is located within the Bowral Conservation Area. The design for the new home needed to respond to the substantial heritage values of the surrounding area and the heritage items. To allow the home to sit comfortably in the ...heritage environment, a dark-red face brick was used for the walls, and dark-grey tiles were used for the roof. The Bristile Planum clay flat roof tile was the perfect choice for the project. The colour Slate and a zinc ridge were used to provide contrast. The traditional design of the roof, incorporating high pitches, dormer windows and a large entry porch framed by classical columns, is perfectly finished with the slate-style roof tiles. 06.01.2022 Orana Swanbourne - RDRTE - 2018: The Monier Horizon roof tiles used on this home provide the perfect balance between traditional and contemporary elements of this design. The colour palette and streamlined roof profile draw on the contemporary design elements of todays architecture, while the tile itself provides a sense of familiarity and connection to more traditional building styles of yesteryear. Further, the Horizon range of roof tiles is both cost-effective and suitable for use in this coastal location. Architect: Rietveld Architects | Builder: Zorzi Homes | Contractor: Dale Mason | Manufacturer: Monier Prime
05.01.2022 Avondale Golf Club Re-Roof - RDRTE - 2018: The Avondale Golf Club was built in 1927. Due to the significant deterioration of some of the original tiles, a new tiled roof was added as part of an extensive clubhouse upgrade. Furthermore, the heritage-listed building featured several different tile patterns, the result of numerous additions over the past ninety years. Following consultation with the heritage consultant and local council, it was agreed that a suitable new terraco...tta tile roof could be achieved using the Bristile Marseille pattern in the colour Roja, with matching curved ridge tiles. The original roof had a weathered character that some considered attractive, and there was concern that the new tiles could appear too bright and visually dominant due to the large extent of the roof. The pattern, patina and reflective qualities of various roof tiles were assessed, and the Bristile products were judged as the most appropriate for this project. The end result makes a significant contribution to the overall impression of the rejuvenated Avondale Golf Clubhouse. Architect: Architects Johannsen and Associates (AJA) | Builder: Paynter Dixon & Heritage Consultant Sue Rosen Ass | Contractor/Manufacturer: Bristile Roofing | Product: Ceramic Roof Tiles - Marseille Roja
05.01.2022 Sam Klopper, director at @klopper_davis_architects, gives his perspective of the beauty of roof tiles, commenting on @raffaellorossellis project; The Beehive - RDRTE award winner of 2018. . Nestled between an industrial brick warehouse and a row of Victorian terrace houses, the Beehive refuses an immediate reading at first sight. Upon approach, the use of stacked terracotta roof tiles in the facade is revealed, reconfigured into a rhythmic brise-soleil. The project explores the perceived limitations of terracotta tiles and celebrates the layers of filigree and geometric complexity that can be found in the often-overlooked terracotta tile.
05.01.2022 Hamptons in the Hunter - RDRTE - 2019: For this new Hunter Valley home in New South Wales, the design team zeroed in on the Hamptons look, identifying it as a style thats here to stay. The design intention was to use clean lines and traditional finishes. The project was intended to be as simple as possible internally, with features such as marble counters and silver mirrors. The house, located in a new estate in Pokolbin, has a generous parcel of land around it and plenty of privacy. Monier Roofing terracotta Nullarbor tiles in Peak were selected for the roof, chosen for their streamlined, slate-style appearance. Architect: Dymaxion Designs | Builder: Jon Clark Building | Contractor/Manufacturer: Monier Roofing | Product: Nullarbor - Peak
04.01.2022 Custom Design - RDRTE - 2020: The site for this home in Melbourne’s Beaumaris was chosen for its potential to be excavated, allowing the creation of an extensive garage area for the owners’ car collection as well as ample storage space. The entrance on the side helps to maximise the accommodation in the home. The dwelling has three living spaces; a study, which both owners work in; a large alfresco area and an extra external toilet. The home has ...also been future-proofed, with provision for a lift, should the couple stay into their later years. Another key component of the design was for the owners to have their living area, kitchen/dining and main bedroom located on the same level, with the children’s bedrooms upstairs. The roofing material is key to the exterior aesthetic; due to the Bayside suburb receiving a lot of weather exposure, tiles were a good choice for the location. Monier Roofing concrete Atura tiles in Sambuca were chosen for their almost flat profile, with a slight ripple. With the darker colour (Sambuca), there are sight lines for the roof with nice crisp lines. The final result is a contemporary facade with a striking black-and-white colour scheme. 04.01.2022 City Beach 2 - RDRTE - 2019: Built just metres from the coast in City Beach, Western Australia, this two-storey home is both timeless and beautiful. The rendered face is framed perfectly with Terracotta Nullarbor roof tiles from Monier Prime, selected for their finish and ability to sustain coastal weather conditions. With the harsh winter storms, salt and sand that the dwelling will endure in its coastal location, it is imperative that the roof remains watertight for many years to come. The Terracotta Nullarbor profile in Peak complements the many angles and pitches of the large roof space, making it a focal point from the street. Architect/Builder: Mulvay Builders | Contractor/Manufacturer: Monier Prime | Product: Terracotta Nullarbor - Peak
04.01.2022 Amaroo Aged Care Facility - Wandoo - RDRTE - 2017: This project is an extension to an existing aged-care facility, Buckley Caring Centre. The new two-storey wing, named Wandoo, accommodates 74 high-care beds at the Amaroo Village site in Gosnells, Western Australia. To create a seamless finish, the new building needed to blend with the existing buildings. With this in mind, the roof tiles and wall colour were selected to match the original building materials. The roof ste...ps down where the old meets the new, so the elements do not jar against each other. The port-cochere roof twists to form a subtle curve and barges project to convey a resort-style welcome to those approaching the building. The architectural team for Wandoo was Gary Batt, Adrian Grose and Glenn Howat, with interiors by de Fiddes Design. 04.01.2022 Canterbury Residence - RDRTE - 2014: This high-end French provincial residence is of uncompromising quality and class, located in one of Canterburys most beautiful locations in Melbournes east. The award-winning combination delivers the home of master builder Brian Lee and Architect Phillip Mannerheim. Mannerheim says, "These curved roofs are a challenge to get just right, especially with the butt joint. This roof has pulled it off and is perfect. The tiles are very consist...ent, and the artistry is to the highest standard." It is difficult to achieve a polished result when building a curved roof from a flat shingle, but this project has completed this successfully. The use of the Shingle Tile demonstrates a smooth and refined look for the roof and is the bright standout feature in the design of this residence. 03.01.2022 A Refreshing Idea - RDRTE - 2019: The Windsor Downs home was designed and built in the 1990s at the height of the Australian obsession with the Federation style. The roof, made from concrete, had started to discolour and go quite light and greyish. The homeowners decided that it was time to update the roof. Monier Roofings terracotta Nullarbor tiles in Peak were chosen to hold the roofs colour. The house was well designed internally and externally, and addresses its site ...well, prompting the homeowners to keep the current floor plan while refreshing everything, starting with the roof. Dream Roof was engaged for the roofing job, which included replacing and updating the guttering. The project takes the dwelling from a dated Federation look to a Hamptons-style home. 03.01.2022 Integrated Solar Roof Tile Mornington - RDRTE - 2020: The owners of this north-facing, 2,200-square-metre block of land on Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula were looking to build their dream home. The estate had a requirement for a minimum of 5kW solar panels on each house, and the architect/builder introduced the integrated solar roof tiles from Bristile Roofing to the clients. These tiles have a streamlined look and eliminate the need for typical large solar panels. The final... choice of roof tiles was the Premiere concrete tile in Char Grey from Bristile Roofing, which replicates the appearance of a smaller slate tile and integrates with the 5kW of solar tiles that are incorporated in the north-facing garage roof. 02.01.2022 Twin Creeks - RDRTE - 2018: The use of dark tiles (and their potential for heat gain) is mitigated by good design, including a north-facing aspect, ceiling fans, sarking and 2,700-millimetre-high ceilings throughout. In addition, the alfresco area is enclosed. Louvred windows across the rear south wall coupled with an abundance of windows and stacker doors allow for summer breezes. The result is a simple yet elegant roof that will look beautiful for a lifetime. Architect: OBrien Design and Drafting Builder: Sam Gallo Manufacturer/Contractor: Bristile Roofing
02.01.2022 Harrington Grove - RDRTE - 2019: Trademark Designs was asked to design a large Mediterranean-style home a task that required many hours of articulate design and careful thought. The clients expressed their passion regarding the emphasis on the shapes and curves needed to make up the exterior of the home and the special roof design that was needed to accompany that. The considered choice of internal and external materials was paramount to achieving the design brief. The ex...terior barrister white walls feature a fine render detail, with all corners of the structure curved. A large arch and rectangular windows were installed, with curves continuing throughout the interior of the home. The turret tower at the front entry adds to the unique look. The design of the roof and the visual aspects of the roof tiles play a major role in the project. After extensive research with the clients, the designers chose Curvado Roja terracotta roof tiles from Bristile Roofing. The unique colour of the terracotta tile was the perfect choice for achieving the desired appearance. Not all clients are bold enough to select the colour red, but this roof design needed to stand out, and that has been accomplished. The project captures the essence of a Mediterranean home among a sea of grey concrete and metal roofs. 01.01.2022 Casa Dei Sogni - House of Dreams - RDRTE - 2019: Half-pipe roof tiles imported from Europe dominate this homes exterior. Multiple columns, wrought iron balustrading, copper guttering, an intricate chimney and subtle trims give the house the feel of continental Europe. Marble stairs lead to the double wrought iron entrance doors. The doors lead into the 6.5-metre entrance tower, with an arched window giving visitors just a glimpse of what awaits in the alfresco area and court...yard beyond. Handmade wrought iron chandeliers along with moulded archway columns, add to the authenticity of the homes style. Clerestory windows naturally light and ventilate the interior. The living area opens onto a spacious covered alfresco area via eight-metre-wide cavity stacker doors. The alfresco area has detailed skylights, heaters and a built-in barbecue. This space overlooks the mosaic-tiled pool and spa, all to be enjoyed from the separate pool hut, which features a chandelier and decorative ceiling. A skylight offers natural lighting, with metallic ceiling paint that creates for a unique room. In keeping with the Italian theme, different colours have been used on the walls and ceilings throughout the home. Special features such as LED strip lighting with different colour options, underfloor hydronic heating, large underground tanks and concealed downpipes add to the sense of luxury. The home has authentic tile-capped privacy fencing, and perfect orientation for the north and eastern sunlight, and the beautiful escarpment breezes are maximized, all contributing to the Italian villa theme a true casa dei sogni. 01.01.2022 Keilor East - RDRTE - 2020: This project features the Bacchus tiles in Coal Dust from Alice Roof Tiles. The product’s smooth finish is perfect for use on a beachside Hamptons-style retreat, or to simply add a touch of class to any project. This particular site required that the existing structure be knocked down and rebuilt. 01.01.2022 Historically, terracotta roof tiles have been used extensively in ancient and modern architecture. Revisiting its raw character and timeless appeal, terracotta, otherwise known as baked earth, has proven to stand the tests of time. This can be seen in celebrated examples around the world such as the renaissance churches in Northern Italy and rural communities throughout Europe. The evolution of terracotta roof tiles has been primarily in the manufacturing process and final product, where they now come in a variety of colours which do not fade over time and retain their vibrancy for many years. This makes terracotta roof tiles a superior choice due to their durability and ageless aesthetic.
