21.03.2022 We hope everyone that was able to get to the cemetery yesterday had a special day commemorating their loved ones. While yesterday in Sydney was a beautiful day, the wet weather of late has meant that the park is not to its usual standard; however, our team is working to restore this as the ground dries out and becomes strong enough for heavy equipment. This is a priority for our maintenance team and we appreciate your patience. #maintenance #parkland #gardens #grounds #landscaping #safety #rainraingoaway #waitingforlongperiodsofsunshine

24.01.2022 The Double Ninth Festival is observed in China, Japan, Korea, Vietnam and several other countries. It is on the ninth day of the ninth month in the lunar calendar. This is a traditional Chinese holiday, mentioned in writing since before the Eastern Han period (before AD 25). On this holiday some visit the graves of their ancestors to pay their respects. Sometimes whole extended families head to ancestral graves to clean them and repaint inscriptions, and to lay out food offerings.
24.01.2022 Today begins Australian Wildlife Week (5-11 October)! This week, we're going to share some of our diverse wildlife species that can be found in Rookwood Cemetery, starting with the Eastern Water Skink. Generally found near slow flowing creeks and estuaries, this species is endemic to Australia. They are greyish brown with small black spots, have long tails and are about 10cm from snout to vent. 23.01.2022 Built between October 1873 and May 1878, the Elephant House was a rest house for cemetery visitors in the Anglican section. The name is rumoured to have come from a nickname as visitors felt it looked like the original Elephant House at Taronga Zoo. Left derelict for many years, it was recently restored and is a striking example of Victorian-era architecture.

21.01.2022 On this day in 1908 was the death of John Gowing, the man who founded the famous eponymous store. At 24 years of age, Gowing emigrated to Sydney with 400. He opened his drapery business on Crown Street in 1863 and he and his brother set up the Mercery and Glove Depot, at 318 George Street, which John managed for 200 per annum plus half the profits of the business. This store was located on the corner of Market Street and George Street and still stands today. He passed away in his home in Stanmore and is buried in Rookwood Cemetery.
21.01.2022 Today is Mid-Autumn (Moon) Festival (also known as Lantern Festival or Mooncake Festival), a popular East Asian celebration of abundance and togetherness, dating back over 3000 years. 20.01.2022 On this day in 1999, Sir Peter Emil Herbert Abeles passed away. A refugee from Hungary, he became a businessman in Australia, and was knighted in 1972. Abeles was born in Vienna, but grew up in Budapest until Germany occupied Hungary, where he was sent to a Nazi work camp. He later worked in Romania, until migrating to Australia in 1949. Here, he set up a transport company, Alltrans, with George Rockey, a fellow Hungarian immigrant. In 1967 Alltrans merged with Thomas Nationwide Transport, the combined companies trading as TNT-Alltrans. Under Abeles' guidance as managing director, TNT quickly expanded, and by the 1980s had established a presence in 180 countries and was termed "the second biggest transport empire in the world, operating by road, rail, sea and air". He is buried in Jewish 23E in Rookwood Cemetery.
