22.01.2022 Hi All. I recently did my first Podcast for the Dardanup Shire, and I'm really pleased with how it turned out!! HUGE thankyou to Ric and Barrie for their amazing work, both with me and with the editing!!... I can (and do) waffle on, and onnnn, and onnnnnn when I get on my soapbox about my beloved roos, so for them to pull together something that covered most of the details I wanted to share was nothing short of a freakin miracle!! Please be kind with your criticism and comments, because they had a LOT of waffle to get into something that sort of made sense, and lots was left on the cutting room floor. Apologies for anything I missed, or got wrong!!! Please click on this link and not the one below it, Dardanup Shire would like to see how much interest it generates!!! https://www.dardanup.wa.gov.au/connect-dardanup-podcast/
21.01.2022 Here's a wonderful site where you can listen to almost any Aussie animal in the wild!! Check it out!! https://wildambience.com/wildlife-sounds/kangaroo/
21.01.2022 We are ALWAYS happy to offer advice, help, guidance or assistance with Wildlife and to those who are genuinely interested in becoming a rehabilitater, but it takes a lot more than just feeding and releasing!! Please contact us anytime on 0417992492, and put the animals before your ego!
21.01.2022 Hi All. It's been the craziest week here and there are many people to thank and lots of news to catch up on!! We had our first pinkie of the season come in, a l...il 480g boy who's doing very well so far. He's been named Corona, it seemed only fitting!! Graham had been unwell last week (he looked like death on Thurs!) so I finally got him to contact the doctor and he sent us to the hospital. He had a wheeze in his left lung which WE kinda knew what was happening (again ) but because of these times we find ourselves living in, they called a Code Red (covid alert!!) and went into full-on lockdown mode!! Impressive and great to know that our local hospital is fully prepared for the second wave, but kinda scary if you're the patient!!! Anyhooz, after a cat scan, etc and the appropriate treatment for yet another pulmonary embolism, he came home Friday looking much better than he has in a while!! Friday night I had a callout for a BIG boy down on Centenary Ave... what a shame, he was magnificent!! Three new girls have joined our mob, thank you Caitlin and Dean (Sally and Remi), and Tim and Jim (Suzie) for entrusting us with your precious lil girls! It's always so hard to say goodbye to our furkids when it's time to move them on, but they are all settling in really well!! HUGE thankyou to Michelle Jones and ARC for our medical supplies which arrived on Friday!! I'll do a separate post and tag everyone in!! Thanks to the young guys who contacted us about the lil fence hanger yesterday, and took the time and effort to get her the help she needed. Poor lil girl is at the vet's right now, the prognosis doesn't look good unfortunately. And, just when I thought everything had settled down, I now have 5 joeys that have started sneezing since last night!! So, all action stations for a possible outbreak of Besnoitia!! Fingers crossed it is only a mild case, and not the full Monty!! Soooooo, that was my week, how was yours?!?!?
20.01.2022 Hoppy 3rd birthday Rufus, you're almost a grownup and what a handsome boy you've become!! Looks like Mum and Dad have spoilt you yet again, I hope you share nicely with all the other furry grasshoppers!!
18.01.2022 The work that this amazing woman and the wonderful group of volunteers she works and coordinates with knows no boundaries, especially in troubled times like these!! Thank you just doesn't seem enough for these kinds of miracle lifelines!!! Keep on paying it forward you earth angels, and we'll keep supporting you too!! #VolunteersArePriceless #ARC... #ArcRescueCooperative #RUOK #AOK #ActsOfKindness See more
17.01.2022 WARNING... GRAPHIC IMAGES Hi All, Roo Rescue WA is having its own crisis right now, and the lack of hand sanitizer, discenfectant, etc is just adding to our concerns. Two days ago Gumby (6kg WG boy) started to hunch and look miserable.... Our joeys ALWAYS get sick late on a Friday, just before the weekend when it's even harder to find a vet! Don't know why, it's just how it is! Later that day I noticed his poo was very dark (a possible sign of internal bleeding) and soft, so he was immediately treated with antibiotics, painkillers and isolated. He seemed to settle ....but ... His condition gradually worsened overnight, and he threw himself out of his pouch and started to bleed from the cloaca, then he started to fit. He was heavily sedated, and I was prepared for the worse ....it was a long night. Surprisingly, he made it through the night!!! So first thing this morning (Sunday) my amazing vet managed to get an IV into him, and we brought him home and into ICU. He's on heat, definitely a bit brighter because he even managed to drink half a milk bottle after a dose of baycox, and had a half-hearted nibble on woolly bush, but he's still an exceptionally sick lil man!!! Painstop and Valium are helping to keep him subdued and comfortable, but it is a long shot to pull him through this! In the meantime, the other 5 joeys have started a program of ABS and baycox, even though we aren't sure if that's what's going on!! But because two of the other Joey's have started to show the same symptoms, it's ALL about prevention with the other 5 now!! Wish us luck guys, we're going to need it!!! Bucket loads!!! PS. In the event that Gumby doesn't pull through, there will be a full necropsy done on him so that we can determine exactly what is happening here!!
17.01.2022 With the World in lockdown because of covid-19, it can be easy to forget the reality of East coast wildlife carers who are still struggling to recover from the worse bushfires in Australian history only a couple of months ago!! Rebuilding is continuing, though at a completely different pace and style than before as social distancing is now in play, but the animals don't understand a pandemic! They still need to be cared for, loved, healed and released.... Love your dedication and commitment Rae, sending you much love light and strength!! Please follow Wild2free as they continue to rebuild their sanctuary, and please support them if you can!! It's great to see that, in some places, life goes on as normal.
17.01.2022 DUCKLINGS ON THE MOVE It's that time of year again! Ducks and their fluffy ducklings are beginning to leave their nests in search of the nearest wetlands, a...nd we ask that motorists and cyclists be cautious of duck families on the move. Mother ducks often nest in tree hollows and shrubs a considerable distance away from wetlands. Once ducklings have hatched, the families have to walk to their preferred habitat, which can be challenging as it often means crossing busy roads. It is best not to interfere or try to pick the birds up. This can result in the mother taking off and abandoning the ducklings. It is also not uncommon to see ducks and their hatchlings in backyard swimming pools. If this occurs, we recommend that people leave gates open if possible and encourage them to leave, without chasing them, so they can find suitable nearby wetlands. Ducks and ducklings will be making the journey from nest to wetlands from now until about November. To report injured or orphaned ducklings, call our Wildcare Helpline on 9474 9055. Rick Dawson
15.01.2022 Hi All, As you know, we got hammered by the storm on Tuesday night, and thankfully all the furkids survived, including the 2 big girls who should have been relocated last December, but have defied ALL attempts to relocate them! HUGE thankyou to Mike and Dean from Australian Pest Management Control who finally solved our problem and darted Duchess and Lucy who were safely released yesterday!!... So now we can finally start the clean-up!! It is planned for 11am Saturday (today) and we're asking Roo Rescue WA volunteers, carers and any locals if they're not busy Saturday morning, can you please come over and give us a helping hand!? Text me on 0417992492 for address details (we're in Eaton) if you can make it, the more the merrier!!! All are welcome!! Lunch and refreshments will be provided, and if you have a wheelbarrow, rake, shovel or gloves, please bring them with you so we can get this done as quick as possible!!! Social distancing will be practiced, but it is a BIG yard, so masks won't be necessary!! The highlight of the day will be relocating the 9 lil guys from the front run, into the back yard, and watching their very first HUGE hoons!!! Really hope you can join us!! It should be a fun day! PS. There will be drinks and marshmallow toasting around the firepit afterwards, hope you can stay and enjoy it with us!!!
15.01.2022 Hoppy MacMummy's Day to All the crazy and dedicated kangaroo carers around Australia and across the World! Hope you ALL have a wonderful day!!! ... Lotsa love from the 2020 Roo Rescue WA mob!!!
14.01.2022 No matter how many times I see these crazy lil guys doing what comes naturally to them, they still spin me out and make me laugh!!!!! If you have never seen one before, meet BJ, one of our very own Aussie Lumholtz tree kangaroos!!! Dr Karen Coombes runs the ONLY tree kangaroo sanctuary in Australia, and for the last decade she has been researching the causes behind the increasing blindness that is spreading through the wild tree roo community.... Please follow her sanctuary and share my delight in these adorable but relatively unknown Aussie critters!!! PS. LOVE your work gf!!
13.01.2022 Stuffed toys are not just for human kids!!
11.01.2022 Just thought I would post the official link to our podcast. Many thanks to the Shire of Dardanup for all the support and assistance they have and continue to give to Roo Rescue WA . It takes a village to raise a joey too!!
11.01.2022 Thought we all needed a little happiness right now!! This is a tree kangaroo, from Papua New Guinea, but we have our very own version called a Lumholtz tree kangaroo. If you are interested in seeing more about our guys, check out our very one and only tree kangaroo sanctuary at https://www.treeroorescue.org.au/ Isn't he sooo sweet??
11.01.2022 Good morning everyone!! Breakfast time in lockdown at Roo Rescue WA, or ANY morning, lockdown or not!!
11.01.2022 I know we're all in lockdown, staff have been stood down, but some businesses, like restaurants, have been able to adapt and do takeout for example. BUT, what about those businesses who can't just stack the chairs, close the doors, and come back later?? What about businesses that work with animals, such as zoos, and wildlife parks, and native animals???... These businesses can't "stand down" their animals, and right now, they can't feed them as well!!! They fall between the gaps of government payments and hand-outs, (and the animals don't have social security numbers!) so they aren't eligible for any of the prop-ups available to other businesses, and the animals still need feeding!! I know we are ALL struggling in our own ways right now, but IF you can, please support these people and their furred, feathered, or scaley charges. Covid-19 is really affecting these poor darlings and they can't even catch it! Please donate if you can, and share this post far and wide, coz it's going to be a long lockdown!!
09.01.2022 I have nothing but love and total admiration for this amazing woman and her incredible dedication and commitment to our native animals!!! Rae, you're definitely an earth angel!!
09.01.2022 We really need to get the front flyscreen door latch fixed!! Can't even watch Aussie Gold Diggers without an audience gatecrashing!!!
09.01.2022 Hi All. It's been a while since I posted here, definitely time for an update!! After being hammered by a storm early in May, I'm pleased to inform you that the "Storm of the Decade" thankfully amounted to nothing more than a few branches down and some gusty winds for us here! ... And, we have a new arrival!! Poor Monty lost his buddy a few weeks ago but because we still had the two big girls we were unable to take him in sooner. I prepared the quarantine pen yesterday and his carer Lee brought him over in the afternoon. Saying goodbye is always tough on our carers! Our joeys become a BIG part of our daily lives and routine, but eventually the time comes when they have to graduate from home care and enter Roo School. Congratulations Lee, yet another gorgeous furbub!! Monty Carlo is a beautiful fat and healthy 12-13kg boy who will fit right in with the other like-sized boys we have here, and will go to release in October with the rest of them. We have two lil girls coming in tomorrow (thanks for all your time, dedication and love with them Caitlin!) which will give our mob the much needed female companionship for our 3 girls. Then, apart from the possibility of one more doe to join this mob (Nic?) Roo School is now at capacity and closed for enrollment this year! The final headcount will be 13, 6 girls, 7 boys, so it's going to be a HUGE move again come October, but we're getting good at this! Fingers crossed it goes smoothly from here on!!!
08.01.2022 Great advice for this time of the year Sue! Caring for pinkies takes an incredible amount of time and dedication, and it is around the clock!!! Feeding is 3 hourly, their skin needs to be kept lubricated, tiny eyes that when they finally open will need wetting drops to keep them from developing cataracts, manual toileting, and the list goes on!!... It's definitely not for the inexperienced, no matter how "cute" they might be. If you find an orphaned joey, please contact your local wildlife shelter, Ranger or vet who will gladly take them in. You can always contact us directly on 0417992492 (sorry, no Messenger) or the WA WildCare Helpline on (08) 9474 9055. Stay safe, and please stop'n'check roadkill if you can. It's joey season.
07.01.2022 Hi All. Got an interesting case from Waroona Vet yesterday afternoon. 1.5kg just furred lil WG boy, who was found near his mother who had fallen into a caustic ...acid waste water treatment site at Alcoa. She had thrown him before she went in so he didn't have direct contact with it, but 3 hours after he arrived here, I noticed his eyes were swollen and sealed closed. I bathed them with cool water, opened his eyes, and discovered the pink tissue around the eyeball incredibly inflamed and starting to protrude from under his eyelids. I applied a liberal amount of Chloroint to each eye, then started cold packing his eyes. I changed the packs every hour throughout the night, and 2 more doses of the ointment. This morning the swelling has almost completely disappeared, and he opened his eyes and actually looked around, which is terrific because I'm really concerned about damage to the eye lens from the caustic fumes. Apart from that, he's drinking very well for a newly in bub, still a bit dehydrated but otherwise in great condition. Has anyone else had any experience with caustic acid and macs? And can anyone offer any advice, or tell me if I'm on the right track, or if I should be prepared for other symptoms/complications, coz this is a first for me!!
07.01.2022 First BIG storm of the season, and we survived the night!! Lotsa branches down, lost one tree at root level, and the quarantine pen took a hammering yet again, but all the furkids are safe!! Preparing for round two today so most of the clean-up will have to wait!!... Big thankyou to Graham and Jodi who got up early and dragged most of the branches into a pile and fixed the quarantine pen! It was a long night for me, even with most of the kids originally pouched, so I slept? with my window wide open so I could hear and see what was happening in the joey pen! Needless to say, not much sleep happened, but the bubs made it through without injury. Nana naps today!!!
06.01.2022 UPDATE on Gumby Hi All, What a difference 24 hours has made!!!... Gumby woke up about 11pm, actually looked around, then did the world's biggest poo (looking quite proud of himself) which was dark reddish brown (old blood)at first, then became a dark green!! And it still kept coming! Many people don't understand wildlife carers obsession with "the poo", but we Mac carers live by the motto "good poo, good roo"! We aren't at "good" yet, but considering this time last night?? I'm absolutely thrilled!! He refused his evening bottle, and decided instead to wash his medicine down with a long, slow, much enjoyed drink of water! Everytime I went to remove it, he went back for more! Then came the icing on the cake .... he stood up and had a big wee! Unfortunately he pulled the IV out when he did it, but that's ok, he had taken over 600mls and doesn't really need it anymore! He's no longer dehydrated! So, with the IV removed, meds onboard, clean bedding, electric blanket and his beloved woolly bush, he's happily snuggled back into bed!! Here's hoping we both get some sleep tonight!!! Huge thankyou to everyone for your wonderful messages and happy thoughts!! Hopefully we really have turned a corner!!
06.01.2022 And a smile for all of our followers!! Nothing as joyful as wombat zoomies!!
06.01.2022 Hi All. It's been an interesting few weeks here at Roo Rescue WA . I had a 7kg wild WG male joey handed in after it had been attacked by a dog in a local suburb. Amazingly he has survived for over a month now without any visible signs of capture myopathy (so far, so good)... BUT, as the clinic still is a work in progress, he was moved into the loungeroom, where of course I too moved in! His trachea was quite infected when he first arrived, and we had to sedate him to debride and dress the wound daily. I also discovered at least 30 other puncture marks around his forearms, back legs, ribcage and neck, plus tendon and muscle damage. He was very lucky to have survived! But, he has finally healed!!!! So hopefully this is the last time I wake up to this!!! #HellisReal #IalsoHaveaEuro #DreamingofaRealBed
06.01.2022 The convid-19 virus has even affected us here at Roo Rescue WA. We were very excited, getting ready for our first official display at Walk on the Wild Side on the Eaton foreshore at the beginning of April, plus we had been booked at Bunnings Bunbury for Easter, and Bunnings Australind for Mother's Day. Things were looking great........ Three opportunities to not only educate the public, but the possibility to raise necessary funds to continue running our wildlife shelter. We run a clinic here, and have 12 joeys and roos of various sizes and ages, so we're going through milk and feed like there's no tomorrow, but now this damned virus has shut everything down until further notice! All three events have been cancelled, so no opportunity to fundraise, and the feed bill keeps adding up!! Things were looking extra bleak until our knight in shining armour once again came to the rescue!!! HUGE THANKYOU to Steve Jones at Sunflower Farm in Margaret River who is also in the same boat, but on a much BIGGER scale!! The local community has rallied behind him so totally that it has been a bit overwhelming for everyone concerned, and true gentleman that he is, he has shared his bounty with us!!! His generous donation of 4 bales of oaten hay and 2 bags of shandy chaff will definitely help keep our fat furbums fat and happy for a few weeks!! So thank you Steve, Debbie, Julie and everyone who made it possible! I'll have to think of something very special in return to show our gratitude. #FeelingTheLove #SharingTheWealth #TrueFriendsInTimesOfNeed
05.01.2022 Bedtime routine for we Mac carers!! Love your work Scruff, ya big softie!!! Such spoilt and much loved furbubs!!
03.01.2022 A timely reminder why it's so critical for our native orphans to go to an experienced carer!! They look soooo cute and cuddly, and everyone wants one as a pet, but the reality is that these lil guys are complex wild marsupials that need specialised care!! They can fall fatally ill just from giving them cow's milk, because ALL Aussie critters are both lactose AND gluten intolerant!!... Please, if you find an orphaned joey, take it to your local vet who will check it over for any injuries, and they will then contact a qualified carer. And, if you want to become a wildlife carer, please contact your local Parks and Wildlife department, become familiar with the new laws coming into play in WA, find a local shelter or carer and volunteer with them!! Our wildlife needs ALL the help it can get, and we always welcome dedicated new carers!!!
03.01.2022 Ok, I'm concerned!! I've just heard that the WA/SA border is to be closed, what does this mean exactly!?!? Does it mean that car and caravan traffic is no longer allowed through, or does it also include trucks and trains??... Because if the borders are totally shutdown, where are we Waussies going to get our supplies/food/feed/etc from?? Except for fresh produce ie. fruit, vegetables, dairy, meat which is sourced locally, EVERYTHING COMES IN TO WA BY TRUCK OR TRAIN FROM THE EAST COAST!!!! AND this Includes ALL of our wildlife formulas!!! We don't have WA warehouses that stock this stuff, we have to order directly from the east coast each time, and it's pinkie season!! How prepared is everyone? I'm down to my last half bucket of divevelact, and I'm supplying formula for 5 carers with 15 joeys between us!! My bigger kids are now going to begin weaning off altogether, but that's not an option for the smaller bubs!! Thankfully pinkie season is late over here because of the lack of rainfall, but what happens if the borders don't reopen before we get hit bigtime!?!? I'm going formula hunting tomorrow, wish me luck!
02.01.2022 GRAPHIC WARNING IMAGE!!! This was Gumby when he first started fitting late last night. He had been on a pillow dog bed wrapped in towels, but this is how I found him 15 minutes after I had last checked him. We here at Roo Rescue WA endeavour to be a teaching/education facility as well as sanctuary and triage clinic.... Sharing our stories hopefully can help others. I am posting it to show new carers who quietly follow us how fast this kind of thing can hit, and what to expect if they find themselves in this situation. He had already been given antibiotics, but he was immediately sedated with IM Valium at the rate of 1ml per 2kgs (he weighs 6kg), and an oral dose of Painstop night of 3mls was also given. I administered an equal second dose half an hour later before he stopped fitting. Total Valium dose was 1ml per kg. (2x 3mls) I apologize if it is hard to watch, but it's even harder to experience firsthand. Please feel free to scroll by!
02.01.2022 I'm always learning about our weird wildlife, and I love sharing their weirdness with everyone!! Our wildlife truly is unique!!
02.01.2022 I love the stories of my fellow carers.... Little Urchins Wildlife Shelter, these guys are simply amazing!!!
01.01.2022 UPDATE ON GUMBY AND STONEY. Gumby crashed again 24 hours after going back out into the pen and was sedated and put back onto an IV overnight. The following morning (Thursday) he was standing up in the cot surrounded by dozens of pellets! He went back into the pen and even though he's still a bit flat, he has been eating grains and browse.... Stoney was given more IV fluids than Gumby and didn't crash a second time. She jumped out of the cot on Wednesday morning and was returned to the outside pen. She's still a bit flat but is also eating grains and browse. Both are drinking water but not as much as I'd like. I took them totally off milk during their illness, as I have found that these kinds of bacterium can thrive in dairy products. They had their first milk bottle on Thursday, and later that day both began to do slimy pellets again. I immediately stopped the bottles. They are now on oat water, black tea and nutrigel in their bottles instead milk (first time tonight) so we shall see in the morning how they are doing! BUT, no more blood in their faeces (touchwood) so far and we have pellets now, not cowpats!! CONCLUSION .... I don't have one!!! They obviously had something but I was unable to get any faecal testing done. Treatment included oral enrotril, Flagyl and sulphur T, sedation, IV fluids (subcutaneous IV), and painstop a couple of times because it was obvious that they had severe stomach pains. I'm still sticking with the possibility of Campylobacter. I contacted the water board and after a lengthy conversation I am getting a professional plumber in to check out the piping system through the roof of my home. We've had trouble with our hotwater system over the last decade (3 new and different systems installed, all by the same company) and I have the feeling there's been some dodgy short cuts done that have left it susceptible to a possible build up of said bacterium. LONG STORY SHORT... I have 6 (mostly) healthy joeys back in the joey run. It looks like we have dodged a bullet! But one of the two lil girls that Jodi took and quarantined has started to show signs yesterday. Slimy pellets and off her bottles, quiet and hunching instead of mad hops so she's been taken off milk, is on abs, and has been subcut today. Fingers crossed we've caught her early on!! Stay tuned.... it's not over yet.
01.01.2022 NOT FOR THE SQUEAMISH!! I don't usually post videos of birds, but this bird is special!! THIS is the Aussie equivalent to the American Bald Eagle, only he's about twice the size!! An adult can have a 6ft+ wingspan!!... He's only a juvenile, still in rehabilitation, but has learnt how to feed himself. Yay! This is a HUGE first step in returning to the wild!! Raptor carers are a special breed! They not only have to supply fresh meat daily for their charges, (usually whilst still dealing with the cuteNfluffies!), they also have to provide a suitable flight pen to continue these majestic birds path to rehab. Bird cages just don't cut it if you have a 6ft wingspan, and flight aviaries don't come cheap!! And without the ability for these majestic birds to truly fly and build muscle strength, release is not an option. We volunteer wildlife carers really are a unique bunch of dedicated weirdos!! And Pam, you're a bloody legend woman!! #WhoNeedsVacations #VolunteersArePriceless #ItsaCallingNotaChoice #TimeOffNotOptional #WildlifeAngels
01.01.2022 This is a brilliant visual and audio explanation of the traits and characteristics of the most common snake I catch on a very regular basis! This dugite (western Brown) is only young, maybe a yearling, but you can see how quickly they move. As explained, they are very rarely aggressive, and tend to be more shy and quick to flee, rearing or striking only if they feel threatened or cornered. Bites to animals and humans usually are the result of accidental interaction and can be... fatal to both without immediate medical attention and treatment!!! But the major problem with a dugite bite is that it doesn't sting, and so people can be unaware that they have actually been tagged. IF you find yourself in this situation and have been bitten, PLEASE dial 000 asap, and remain calm and as immobile as possible. If you have elasticated compression bandages available, apply them firmly from fingertips to armpit, or toes all the way to the groin, including lymph glands, depending on where you've been bitten. DO NOT WASH THE WOUND, ATTEMPT TO SQUEEZE OR SUCK OUT THE POISON!!!! Do not panic, remain calm, still and wait for medical help to arrive. Our local hospitals carry a plentiful supply of antivenin, you're in good hands!! Stay safe, and stay alert.
01.01.2022 It's pinky season again here in South West Australia, so we're asking people (if they can do so safely) to stop and check roadkill for orphaned joeys. For those who feel confident enough to do it themselves, the video links below will show you what to do. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=ISnNiIJmfr4&feature=share... https://www.facebook.com/RooRescue/videos/362371294426054/ But if you do come across a dead roo and aren't able to check the pouch, please call us on 0417992492 or the WA Wildcare Helpline on 0894749055 to get assistance in your area!! Drive safely, and please stop'n'check if you can!
