As part of the international 16 days of activism to stop violence against women, we are running a charity women’s self-defence seminar on this Saturday 5 December from 11am - 1pm at our Westfield Warringah Mall gym. 18.01.2022 20 YEARS In the year 2000 we started our journey. New century and the future was open. What’s coming on the rise of the new millennium!? Arriving in Australia ...after 2 months of surfing in Indonesia the plan was to return to my gym and keep training and teaching in my homeland Brazil...but destiny had other plans... Walking on the street on a summer night in Manly I saw a Karate gym glass window where people where training on the floor! so I went to check it out. There was a blue belt bjj teacher and a bunch of white belts students. - Hi, can I come train tomorrow? I asked. - Yes for sure! The teacher replied. So I took my gi and belt from my surfboards bag (I normally use it to protect the boards from breaking in the surf trips, just one of the 1000 ways you can use your gi) and there I went. - Are you a black belt!?! - Yep! And the rest is history. Bringing the ROOTS of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu to Australia the way it is taught in Brazil. The Real Jiu-Jitsu! That’s how and why Roots BJJ was founded and opened it’s first gym doors at Bondi. From there on we just went up and up as a crazy rocket: First gym opened by a Brazilian BJJ Black Belt in Australia. First Brazilian BJJ Black Belt to live and teach full time in Australia. Prof Paulo Guimarães is the first person to receive Australian Citizenship thru Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Creation of the NSW BJJ Federation to grow and develop the sport of BJJ in the state and in the country (as the result of it nowadays we have many international champions who started and learned competing in these events and many more to come) Roots was 3rd place overall team at the BJJ World Cup in Brazil representing Australia and making the first Australian BJJ Champions ever! Andrew Gorton , Phillipa Katonivualiku, David O'David O'Brien and Prof Paulo fighting for Australia brought 4 gold medals. Roots again having the first ever Australian Abu Dhabi BJJ Pro champion athlete, Steffen Krieg. And many other state, National and International champion students since then. Prof Paulo travelling the country teaching seminars in many different martial arts gym spreading the BJJ news. also teaching the Australian Army and Police force in many occasions to improve their hand to hand combat skills thru bjj and self defence techniques. 12 Roots gyms in Australia 17 Roots gyms in South Korea 05 Roots gyms in Macedonia BUT the most important of all in 20 years is changing people’s lives to the better with our gyms, events, competitions, seminars (to civilians and the military), showing everyone our way of life, making healthier, more respectful and happier kids and adults thru BJJ. The journey never ends and I have to tell you that these were amazing 20 years since that day in 2000 and nothing makes me more proud than bringing and being the Roots of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in this country called Australia So thank you to all of you who are/were part of this history. The students who became instructors, friends, brothers, inspiration, example, deception and success. YOU make Roots BJJ, we ARE Roots BJJ! Yesterday was a party with all our mat friends and family from white to black belts together, to celebrate, fight and laugh. Looking to everyone on the mats smiling and enjoying the moment was the best sensation I could have. The Roots BJJ family is a strong, proud and beautiful group of amazing people. Warriors ready to battle! Bring on the next 20 years!!!! We are Samurais, Vikings, Spartans, Alexanders, Gengises, Hanibbals, Boudiccas, Spartacuses, Achilleses, Leonidases, Gracies... 17.01.2022 Women's Self-Defence Charity Workshop wrap-up. On Saturday 5 December, a group of fearless women and girls took part in our self-defence workshop. Thank you to our local community for making this event happen. It was great to not only be part of the White Ribbon 16 days of action, but also to contribute to a local charity, Gotcha4Life.... Thanks to Yugen Surfboards, Amazon Power, M Barber, oOH Media!, Sub Apparel, and Four Seasons Landscaping and Gardening for sponsoring the event.

On Saturday 5 December at our Warringah Mall gym, we are hosting a charity self-defence workshop for women.
