23.01.2022 With the drought and the hot weather, gum trees are shedding their branches. Please be careful where you put the kids play equipment

16.01.2022 I'm taking a day off from the trees. It is 40 degrees after all! I am quite aware that many people are still dealing with trees, particularly the ones that are on fire. In recent years many of my customers have been frustrated by by the inability to clear the fuel load build up on their properties and the surrounding roadsides. Large fines exist for removing trees and even dead logs, which now seem to have gone up in flames anyhow. I have posted some legal information which m...aybe of interest. The first is a booklet called "Trees and the law" which is reasonably readable. The other body of law I posted was the "Native Vegetation Council", which has increasingly been throwing its weight around and prosecuting people for very minor breaches, such as clearing a few branches on their own property. I am no lawyer, but as far as I can tell, at least in the hills you are still allowed to clear anything up to 20 metres from your residence. Beyond that you are allowed to clear non significant trees, that is trees with a girth less than 2m, measured 1 metre above the ground. Unless they are natives. Then they are protected, as far as I can tell. In the suburbs the laws are more restrictive, especially when it comes to natives, but with non natives you are allowed to remove anything closer than 10 metres to your dwelling. Maybe the take home message is don't plant natives because the government won't let you manage them! See more

07.01.2022 The road to the Harrogate bushfire meeting

04.01.2022 Some more images from the fire grounds around Harrogate. This customer saved his house with a garden hose. Many people in these parts could not leave because even though they cleared around their house, the fire raced down the road sides, stopping them from leaving, and stopping the Cfs getting in.

02.01.2022 A couple of photos from the road from Woodside to Harrogate, a scene of total devastation, houses, sheds fences all gone, along with all the dead wood and fuel build up on the sides of the road. Once upon a time, the less wealthy amongst us could use the roadside debris to heat our homes and reduce our power bills
