21.01.2022 Destroyers, on Thursday, the World Surf League announced that Brazilian Maya Gabeira has won the WSL’s 2020 Women’s XXL Biggest Wave Award, setting a new world ...record after she iced the largest wave anyone has surfed this year an epic 73.5 foot (22.4 metre) wave in Nazaré, Portugal. But the *men’s* winner was announced in August: Kai Lenny had surfed a smaller 70 foot (21.3 metre) wave. So what took Gabeira’s win so long to be reported? Both the men’s and women’s awards [] were due to be doled out together on August 17 but on that date, while Lenny was announced as the winner via video, the WSL said the women’s race needed further judging and would be delayed. While WSL judges typically will use photos and videos to estimate the height of nominated waves [] They don’t bring complex science into it.", they tasked scientists and engineers to use photogrammetry techniques and collinear equations to calculate the heights of the waves Gabeira and second-place-winner Justine Dupont surfed but only for the women’s competition. Even though the WSL announced a larger wave measurement for Gabeira’s wave than for Lenny’s, using a completely different methodology for measuring them just adds to the common perception that women and men athletes are competing in separate worlds. Additionally, delaying the women’s award for so long after the men’s buried Gabeira’s potential recognition for out-surfing all of the men this year. https://www.theatlantic.com//maya-gabeira-surfed-bi/616216 Destroyers, it wouldn't be because any of the bros were upset a woman iced a bigger wave, would it? Anyway, let’s make up for the delay and congratulate Maya Gabeira on her gun feat of steering a flimsy piece of fibreglass down a *humungous wall of crashing water* and outsurfing the bros!
