25.02.2022 I've been so flat this week hearing the story of 12 year old drayke losing his life to suicide this week. 12. It's incomprehensible. Us along with so many others have been affected by suicide, and I always try and make a conscious effort to speak openly of it. From the very age they can have a conversation. You can die from sadness. You can. If you don't ask for help. Everybody always wants to help. Don't ever think your alone. ... Us as adults need to get comfortable with that word too. Suicide. Trust me is harder to say outloud than you think. We say other things. Are you ok? What about.... Are you thinking about suicide? And don't say commited, it's not an offence. Most of us are scared of the answer, I learnt through a course I did that your there not to fix but as the first aid. Ask the questions then be the friend that guides them if wanted or just the ears. And if they are ok, and get angry you assumed such things, well you would rather lose a friendship than a friend. The kids know they talk to us when they start feeling a little bit sad. No matter how trivial. The open conversations need to start early. Life moves very quick and it shouldn't all of a sudden be a taboo subject. We need to also speak openly about bullying. I know we all see our kids with rose coloured glasses, but they can be mean. We all can. So pull them up on it. Every time. Last night along with their checklist of chores, we added a few things. What's A kind thing we did for somebody today? Speak in the car. At dinner, breakfast, before bed or first thing. What was your favourite thing today? And the worst thing that happened?.... Then elaborate. Start the conversation. About suicide. And bullying. Teach kids from early that you can't fix it alone. It's not a case of looking in the mirror and internalizing, Manning up. It's about crying, talking, being kind, accepting, sticking up for themselves and others. And knowing what suicide and depression is so those thoughts when and if they come are not new and scary, they can recognise and hopefully start that conversation. Stop the taboo with our generation, and lead by example of acceptance, kindness and not bullying.
