23.01.2022 In 1885, the world's first skyscraper was built in Chicago. The Home Insurance Building went down in history as the world’s first modern skyscraper. Designed by engineer William LeBaron Jenney, the building was supported by a revolutionary steel frame, which allowed for much greater height and stability without the greater weight of traditional masonry construction. It originally had 10 stories and stretched 138 feet in the air. In 1890, two additional floors were added at ...the top, bringing the total height to 180 feet (55 meters). The Home Insurance Building stood until 1931, when it was demolished to make way for another skyscraper, the Field Building. #firstskyscraper #tallestbuilding #homeinsurancebuilding #OMGFacts2020

21.01.2022 The CAIPIRINHA is considered to be the national cocktail of Brazil Consisting of cachaça (a strong rum), lime juice and sugar, it is one of my favourites too! First made in the 1500s, cachaça is similar to rum, but it has a flavor all its own. Most rums are distilled from molasses while cachaça is distilled from the fermented juice of sugar cane. This important difference yields a distinct spirit that is characterized by its funky, grassy flavors, which set the Caipirinha ...apart from other sweet-and-sour cocktails. Many historians believe it was served in the early 20th century as a remedy for illness. Others say it was invented in the 19th century by Brazilian farmers as a way to showcase local sugarcane. The Caipirinha is easy to make and can be constructed right in the glass, but its build instructions are exacting. Lime juice and simple syrup won’t get the job done: The drink specifically calls for lime wedges and finely granulated sugar. Muddling the limes with abrasive sugar helps to release not only the fruit’s juice, but also the rich, aromatic oils from the peel. The difference between a mojito and caipirinha is a mojito is made with rum, mint, and sugar. They are both clear, a little sweet, and muddled, but the drinks taste wildly different. #caipirinha #cachaça

21.01.2022 So this year we are all about TRIVIA! It's taken me a week to finally find the calendar so here we go......... In ancient Greek mythology, who was the god of sleep? Hypnos, known as Somnus in Roman mythology. He was the son of Nyx, goddess of night. He lived in a cave next to his twin brother, Thanatos, in the underworld, where no light was cast by the sun or the moon; the earth in front of the cave was full of poppies and other sleep-inducing plants. The river Lethe (the ...river of forgetfulness) flowed through the cave. #hypnos #Somnus #godofsleep #mythology #Nyx #goddessofnight

20.01.2022 Apparently, soy milk doesn't need to be refrigerated until after it's opened. Supermarkets sell it out of the refrigerated section to make it seem more like cow milk. Soy milk, once opened, should be refrigerated and consumed within five days. Prior to being opened, however, soy milk actually has an unrefrigerated shelf life of at least one year. #soymilk #OMGFacts2020

20.01.2022 Women blink twice as often as men do...and older women blink more frequently than younger women On average, most people blink more than 13,000 times each day. This makes it our most frequent facial action; it is also one of the swiftest movements that our bodies can generate. The blinks primary function is to keep the eyeballs lubricated, but 13,000 blinks is more than necessary to perform this task.... #blinking #OMGFacts2020

18.01.2022 What does the early19th-century term BOBSY-DIE mean? One for our Kiwi friends........... Lots of trouble or fuss. The NZ term evolved as a contraction of an earlier phrase, Bob's-a-dying. The usual dictionary sense of Bob’s-a-dying is of a disturbance or uproar, perhaps with physical violence involved. It requires no stretch of imagination to connect this with sailors on shore leave getting well tanked up, but drunkenness as such doesn’t seem to be the idea behind it.... It’s rare these days and most people will probably have come across it only in seafaring novels. We begin to see it in print in 1828 but by the end of the 19th century it had largely dropped out of public writings but was being recorded in dialect, from Cornwall to Northumberland, sometimes in modified forms such as bobs-a-dial or bobs-a-dilo. It was said to mean boisterous merriment, though it could also mean causing a row or making a huge fuss. The many references to kicking up Bob’s a dying suggests a high-kicking dance. This presumably wasn’t a sea shanty but a tune particularly popular with seafarers. It’s a pity that this doesn’t now seem to be known. It must have been particularly lively to have become linked to uproar ashore, though sailors putting the boot in during an affray would at once have seen the connection. Who or what was bob is likewise not known. One theory has it that it referred to a shilling in old British currency, known as a bob since the latter part of the eighteenth century; bob might have been dying because the sailor’s money was almost spent. On drink, we may reasonably suspect. #bobsydie #bobsadying #forgottenphrases #seafaringterms

12.01.2022 At least 30,000 Americans are injured by toilets every year! Now thats Infants and toddlers have fallen into toilets and drowned. Injuries to adults include bruised buttocks, tail bones, and dislocated hips from unsuspectingly sitting on the toilet bowl rim because the seat is up or loose. Injuries can also be caused by pinching due to splits in plastic seats or by splinters from wooden seats, or very rarely if the toilet itself collapses under the weight of the user.... Older high tank cast iron cisterns have been known to detach from the wall when the chain is pulled to flush, causing injuries to the user. Furthermore, injuries are frequently sustained by people who stand on toilet seats to reach a height, and slip. There are also instances of people slipping on a wet bathroom floor or from a bath and concussing themselves on the fixture. There are also injuries caused by animals..... Some black widow spiders like to spin their web below the toilet seat. In some cases rats crawl up through toilet sewer pipes and emerge in the toilet bowl, so that toilet users may be at risk of having a rat crawl up their buttocks. (Many rat exterminators do not believe this, as pipes are too large for rats to climb and are also very slippery). An 11ft snake emerged from a squat toilet and bit the man on his penis at his home in Chachoengsao Province, Thailand. Both victim and python survived. #toiletinjury #OMGFacts2020

11.01.2022 It took 220 years AFTER the pencil was invented for someone to invent the eraser. The original erasers were bread. Until the 1770s, the preferred way of erasing errant graphite marks relied on bread that had been de-crusted, moistened and balled up. In 1770, the natural philosopher and theologian Joseph Priestley described "a substance excellently adapted to the purpose of wiping from paper the mark of black lead pencil." The substance was rubber.... Though Joseph Priestly may have discovered rubber's erasing properties, it's the British engineer Edward Nairne who is generally credited with developing and marketing the first rubber eraser in Europe. Edward claimed to have come upon his invention accidentally: He inadvertently picked up a piece of rubber instead of breadcrumbs, he said, thereby realizing rubber's erasing properties. "Rubber" actually gets its name from erasers. It was Priestley who is generally credited for naming rubber. The erasing "substance" he described in 1770initially referred to as "India gum"required a rubbing action on the part of the user. Thus, yep, a "rubber." The name ended up generally applying to erasers' construction material rather than erasers themselves, especially after Charles Goodyear figured out how to vulcanize the stuff in the mid-1800s. In Britain, erasers themselves are still often called "rubbers." (Which may lead to some confusion, maybe.) Erasers don't just work manually; they work chemically. Pencils work because, when they are put to paper, their graphite mingles with the fiber particles that comprise the paper. And erasers work, in turn, because the polymers that make them up are stickier than the particles of paperso graphite particles end up getting stuck to the eraser instead. They're almost like sticky magnets. #rubbereraser #OMGFacts2020

09.01.2022 Between 1848 and 185, thee population of an Francisco grew from 900 to 35,000 people thanks to the Gold Rush. The effects of the Gold Rush were substantial. Whole indigenous societies were attacked and pushed off their lands by the gold-seekers, called "forty-niners". The Gold Rush accelerated the Native American population's decline from disease, starvation and the California Genocide. Outside of California, the first to arrive were from Oregon, the Sandwich Islands (Hawa...ii), and Latin America in late 1848. While most of the newly arrived were Americans, the gold rush attracted thousands from Latin America, Europe, Australia, and China. Miners lived in tents, wood shanties, or deck cabins removed from abandoned ships. Roads, churches, schools and other towns were built throughout California. In 1849 a state constitution was written. 04.01.2022 Panama hats are actually made in Ecuador! A Panama hat, also known as an Ecuadorian hat or a toquilla straw hat, is a traditional brimmed straw hat of Ecuadorian origin. Traditionally, hats were made from the plaited leaves of the toquilla palm or jipijapa palm. Beginning in the early to mid-1600s, hat weaving evolved as a cottage industry along the Ecuadorian coast as well as in small towns throughout the Andean mountain range. Hat weaving and wearing grew steadily in Ecuado...r through the 17th and 18th centuries. In 1835, Manuel Alfaro arrived in Montecristi to make his name and fortune in Panama hats. He set up a Panama hat business with his main objective being exportation. Cargo ships from Guayaquil and Manta were filled with his merchandise and headed to the Gulf of Panama. 04.01.2022 The ancient Celts were the first to ferment and distill grains into whiskey. They called it water of life. The word whisky (or whiskey) comes from the Classical Gaelic word uisce (or uisge) meaning "water". Distilled alcohol was known in Latin as aqua vitae ("water of life"). This was translated into Old Irish as uisce beatha, which became uisce beatha in Irish and uisge beatha in Scottish Gaelic. The art of distillation of "aqua vitae", spirit alcohol, spread to Scotland a...nd Ireland no later than the 15th century, primarily for medicinal purposes. The practice of medicinal distillation eventually passed from a monastic setting to the secular via professional medical practitioners of the time, The Guild of Barber Surgeons. The earliest mention of whisky in Ireland comes from the 17th century Annals of Clonmacnoise, which attributes the death of a chieftain in 1405 to "taking a surfeit of aqua vitae". In Scotland, the first evidence of whisky production comes from an entry in the Exchequer Rolls for 1494 where malt is sent "To Friar John Cor, by order of the king, to make aquavitae", enough to make about 500 bottles. #whisky` #wateroflife #aquavitae #uiscebeatha #uisgebeatha #OMGFacts2020
