10.02.2022 They’re not particularly superstitious but Warwick SES volunteers had a feeling Friday, 13 May was going to be a challenge. As the Condamine River and other loc...al creeks began to flood and isolate areas, they began doorknocking, sandbagging and undertaking medication and food runs. The water rose much quicker and higher than expected, leaving many people isolated on the wrong side of the river with no access to supplies, including a number of workers in an industrial estate. With 73 people to rescue and nightfall their deadline, the SES mapped a safe route for evacuation and launched their first boat at 2.15pm. A second boat was launched shortly after with the crews making multiple trips to transport the remaining people to an evacuation centre. What an incredible effort! Well done, Warwick SES! See more

25.01.2022 If you wanted to understand why import record shops needed to save us from the execrable album releases by Australias major companies in the late 60s and early... 70s this is as good an example as anything. Just as LP artwork was becoming more imaginative and ambitious overseas, in our part of the world much of it was tending to look like fish & chip wrapping. That is, if anything ambitious was released at all. I suppose that there was no choice with Wales BADFINGER things like Baby Blue and Day After Day were hit singles for the Apple band but heaven forbid anything that was deemed underground by somebody in an ill-fitting suit who played Mitch Miller at dinner parties. I had a long and revealing 1982 conversation with Tom Evans of Badfinger under a willow tree in his house in Surrey. It had been set up by Alex Young of Grapefruit (and before that The Big Six, who backed Tony Sheridan after the Beat Brothers moved on to find fame as The Beatles), he was one of the big brothers of George, Malcolm and Angus. Tommy and I chatted about a wide range of things and the highlights can be heard on a Raven label CD titled Apple Daze. We spoke about the suicide of his partner Pete Ham, who was depressed over the financial dilemmas that came from management and publishing deals gone wrong (interestingly, Alex had also been signed to Apple Music). He told me how tragic it was that his comrade had seen that as the only way out. Not that much later, he would take the same path himself, hanging himself from the same tree under which we spoke in November 1983. If only theyd been able to see the future. Without You, the Ham/Evans composition that Nilsson had sent to number one, would become another number one, for Mariah Carey, in 1994. It has been recorded by over 180 acts. One imagines, the royalties would have dampened their financial woes. If only they had heeded the words of Take It All, the opener of 1971s Straight Up which Tommy signed for me that day - maybe everything would have turned out differently. Any day, the sun will shine on you Makes it silly to take it bad Take it good, take it glad, take it all I dont need it at all I dont want it at all No, no, no. #badfinger

24.01.2022 Happy birthday to drummer Sandy Nelson who was born on this date December 1, 1938 in Santa Monica, CA. His first recording, with a band called the Renegades (Ri...chard Podolor, Bruce Johnston, and Nick Venet), was "Geronimo", written by Venet, produced by Kim Fowley, and released on the Original Sound Records label. Although it flopped on the national charts, it charted in some of the Mid West markets. The song, along with "Charge", is part of the soundtrack of 1959 film "Ghost of Dragstrip Hollow" released by American International Pictures. Nelson attended high school with Jan Berry, Dean Torrence (who became Jan and Dean), and Kim Fowley. After gaining respect as a session drummer, he played on such songs as "To Know Him Is To Love Him" (Phil Spector's Teddy Bears, 1958), "Alley-Oop" (The Hollywood Argyles, 1960), and "A Thousand Stars" (Kathy Young and the Innocents, 1960). His instrumental recording "Teen Beat", on Original Sound Records, rose to number 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1959. It sold over one million copies, and was awarded a gold disc. Subsequently, he signed with the Imperial label, and released out two more Top 40 hits, "Let There Be Drums", which went to number 7 on the Billboard Hot 100, and "Drums Are My Beat". Guitar playing on these hits was by co-writer Richard Podolor, later a songwriter and record producer. Near the end of 1963, Nelson was in a motorcycle accident. The injuries necessitated amputation of his right foot and part of that leg. Nonetheless, Nelson continued to record into the early 1970s, releasing two or three albums a year, consisting of cover versions of popular hits plus a few original compositions. In September 2008, Nelson and a few friends, recording as Sandy Nelson and the Sin City Termites,[10] released a new record of original compositions, "Nelsonized", on the independent Spinout label. #SandyNelson #drummers #thewreckingcrew #drumlegends #kimfowley

02.01.2022 On September 18 LONNIE LEE celebrates his 80th birthday. He has been performing rocknroll on stage for almost 65 years and has been recording for more than 60.... He really is the Last Man Standing (along with Col Joye and Pee Wee Wilson from the Delltones) from the crop of rock pioneers in this country who blazed the way for the exciting new sound that shook up the world in the 1950s. Almost every entity he trod the boards with (and even wrote songs with and for) are now no longer with us Johnny OKeefe, Dig Richards, Barry Stanton, two of the Brothers Gibb and, internationally, Roy Orbison, Johnny Cash, Phil Everly, Glen Campbell, Lesley Gore, Bobby Vee and Ricky Nelson. Back To Base X arrived in 2019 and got trampled in the rush and crush of all that has happened since I admit my own culpability here. It is an energetic 15 track album that is notable for featuring songs penned by legendary tunesmiths that Lonnie maintained contact with since his/their heyday. In some cases he had tapes forwarded to him by their family members. Every scholar of rocknroll is going to be excited to come across unheard works by Otis Blackwell and John Marascalco. The former, who wrote Great Balls of Fire, Dont Be Cruel, All Shook Up, Return To Sender and many more for Elvis, as well as Defenceless which was a smash here for Lonnie in 1960, has two songs on the album - Loves Hunger Pain and Ready Steady. The latter, who wrote Lonnies big hit Starlight Starbright and, at the same time, global hits such as Rip It Up, Ready Teddy and Good Molly Miss Molly, has four original rock era songs here: Hey Little Mama, Going Jukin, Back Door Sally and Wouldnt You Know. Lonnie has a great many career distinctions, such as Australias first stereo LP, one of the earliest covers of a Barry Gibb song (Id Like To Leave If I May), stints hosting Six OClock Rock, filling in for Johnny OKeefe (his early manager/ producer and writer of his first record and first smash hit, Aint It So), and some time working in the U.S. A particular joy here is the presence of the original Leemen drummer Leon Isackson, who played on literally hundreds of tracks over the years and has been a member of The RJs, Rajahs and Mighty Guys. This is not some crass party reworking of old hits, it is something worthy of an 80 year old who still has fire in his belly and continues to personify a life lived for rocknroll. I recommend it. Oh and Happy Birthday Lonnie. May you keep on keeping on .. for a very long time. Your spirit does you credit, you long have been, as you put it in one of your own songs, A Real Gone Cat. #lonnielee #backtobasex

02.01.2022 If, when I was a teenager, PATTIE BOYD had even acknowledged my existence, let alone conveyed her ‘love’ to me, I would have been quite delirious. The dolly bir...d in the railway carriage scene in A Hard Day’s Night who was so gorgeous that she won the heart of an actual Beatle, epitomized everything that was truly scrumptious about the opposite sex. When she was later celebrated as Layla by Eric Clapton she became even more exotic, and I swooned even more. At a Sydney art gallery, decades later, I duly pledged my troth during a photo exhibition and she was gracious enough to accept it with a smile, even a laugh. I think she’d seen it before! #pattieboyd
