24.01.2022 Showcasing Cemetery Heritage Historical Societies and family history groups have been offering cemetery tours across the Gippsland region, which are becoming in...creasingly popular. These cemeteries are crucial sites of local heritage and memory. They are important places but are often overlooked in the shadow of more high profile heritage sites. All active cemeteries are run by volunteer trusts with very modest resources and few, if any, employees. Cemetery tours are a good way to explore the social history of your region and a good way to support your local cemetery trust. The Hazelwood Cemetery Trust is running a cemetery tour on Sunday 29th September from 1.30pm . Details are in the attached link. (Disclosure: The CGS Director is a volunteer member of the Hazelwood Cemetery Trust Board) https://www.eventbrite.com.au/e/hazelwood-cemetery-history-

20.01.2022 The cemetery has an information gazebo located just inside the main gate. It contains a list of all burials recorded in the cemetery between 1856 and June 2012.

18.01.2022 Over the last few weeks we have been making improvements to the cemetery. Some changes may be more obvious than others. There has been an upgrade to the drainage at the cemetery. Also a new equipment storage shed is being constructed. These projects should be completed soon. We appreciate your understanding and apologise for any inconvenience that they may have caused.

17.01.2022 In 1912 the Rosedale Cemetery Trust purchased concrete memorial crosses in order to mark out the graves not otherwise shown by tombstones. 45 crosses were placed to mark some of the earliest graves. Only about 20 crosses remain in the original section of the cemetery today.

16.01.2022 SOPER Requiem Mass for the Repose of the Soul of Mr Brian Soper will be offered at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, Queen Street Rosedale at 11.30am on Wednesday October 9, 2019. At the conclusion of Mass, the Funeral will leave for the Rosedale Lawn Cemetery.

16.01.2022 Administering local cemeteries will be the subject of the next social meeting of the Rosedale and District Historical Society on Sunday 4th of August. Sharyn R...ees, secretary of Sale and Rosedale Cemetery Trusts will speak about important matters that families need to know when loved ones pass away and the remains or ashes need to be interred in a cemetery. Right of Interment is one of many forms that grieving families or friends are asked to sign by funeral directors and Sharyn will explain the importance of families knowing their responsibilities. Sharyn will explain that cemetery trusts are charged with overseeing all activities in a cemetery and families need to be aware of the regulations if they wish to make changes to family graves. A BBQ will be held at 12 noon and the presentation will follow at 1.30pm at the societys rooms in the 1913 Rosedale Shire Hall at 1-3 Cansick Street Rosedale. Everyone is welcome and for further information and bookings please ring Marion Ph. 0432579757. See more

14.01.2022 In Memory of the Arthur triplets. The Arthur triplets, Agnes, Ethel and Thomas, were born on the 16th of September, 1893, at Rosedale to Constable William Arthur and his wife Mary. William Arthur was born in Ireland about 1856. He was stationed at Sale when he married Mary Howard at St Marys Chapel in 1879. The couple lived at Heyfield and Cowwarr before William was appointed to the Rosedale Police Station about 1886. By 1893 the couple had four boys and two girls.... When the triplets were born Ethel lived for just 36 hours, Agnes for four months, and Thomas for six months. They are buried in grave 14 of the Old Catholic section (P4) of the cemetery. The grave is marked with a headstone that is broken and weathered. The only inscription currently visible is IN MEMORY OF at the top of the headstone; the remaining inscription has been eroded by the weather. After the death of the children the family moved to Melbourne, and William and Mary had another two girls and a boy.

14.01.2022 Then and Now These two posts are located in the original section of the cemetery. They are approximately 6’ 6 high, each with a section of about 9 square and they have notches for three rails. The post on the left has vee notches on the south face and partial notches on the west face. The post on the right, in the "now" photo, shows signs of charcoal and burning on the south face. There are the remains of another post approximately 8’ to the north of the left post, however ...only about 8 of this post remain above the ground. The first photo was taken 7 March 1975 from the State Library of Victoria. The Second photo was taken 19 November 2019. Do you have any old photos of the cemetery to share? 11.01.2022 The building to the right of the original cemetery entrance was built in 1912 by T. A. Duck for the lump sum of 32 pounds. It was used as a mortuary chapel and was fitted with trestles, etc., to support a coffin during a religious service. It was made of iron on red gum standards, with a room partitioned off for storage and a water tank. The works also included the construction of a picket fence of one chain on each side of the entrance gates, and re-hanging the gates on new posts.

10.01.2022 In Memory of Ah Lee who died the 8th of February 1890, aged 50 years. Buried in the Rosedale Cemetery, Old Ground, grave 43 (OG-00-043). The inscription reads: RIP... Ah-LEE 1839-89 This headstone is a bluestone slab measuring 14 x 12 (35 x 30 cm). The inscription was made using straight lines by a stone marking tool making the text look runic in style. This headstone is lying flat in the ground. It has survived in a row of unmarked graves in the original burial ground in the cemetery. The inscription has the year of death as 1889, when in fact Ah Lees death occurred on the 8th of February 1890. From the Gippsland Farmers Journal, 14 February 1890, page 2: A Chinaman named Ah Lee, employed on the Nambrook [Nambrok] estate, Rosedale, was killed on Saturday by falling from a dray he was driving, the horse having bolted. He fell from the shaft and broke his neck. Ah Lee worked for John King as a gardener on Kings Nambrok estate.
