25.01.2022 Wearing a face mask should now be a normal part of our day to day lives, particularly in situations where physical distancing is not possible. NSW Health has strongly recommended the use of face masks in certain situations to help prevent the spread of COVID-19. If you havent already, please ensure that you and your family have access to masks that you can use for medical appointments, catching public transport, attending your local supermarket or other high-risk situations.... Information on how you can make your own cloth mask is available here: https://www.health.nsw.gov.au//covi/Pages/cloth-masks.aspx (thanks Westside Medical Centre for the valuable resource). #makehealthynormal #facemasks #covid19

25.01.2022 Public health alert Pharmasave Cherrybrook pharmacy 09 August 2020 NSW Health is advising people who visited the PharmaSave Cherrybrook Pharmacy, in Appletree Shopping Centre, from 4pm to 7pm on Thursday 6 August to be alert for symptoms of COVID-19. Prior to the onset of symptoms, one of the cases reported in todays figures worked at the pharmacy. They were wearing a mask during their shift.... People who were at the pharmacy at the same time are urged to watch out for any symptoms of COVID-19, and if they occur, to immediately self-isolate and seek testing. The pharmacy will undergo cleaning and will be closed temporarily as a precaution. Please contact your GP over the phone if you are concerned about your risk of COVID-19. A full list of COVID-19 testing clinics is available here, https://www.health.nsw.gov.au/Infectio//Pages/clinics.aspx

25.01.2022 National #StrokeWeek starts tomorrow. This year, it is perhaps more important than ever. Since the COVID-19 outbreak, fewer people have called triple zero (000) and gone to hospital at the first signs of stroke.... This year, wed like to share ways in which we can all save lives by: Recognising the signs of stroke (Face, Arms, Speech and Time), and Calling an ambulance straight away if you suspect a stroke Sharing this message with as many people as possible We will be sharing a range of educational resources this week and encourage you to help spread the word to your loved ones. Best wishes, Team Rosedale

24.01.2022 Taking care of your mental health and wellbeing is important. The pandemic has put extra pressure on peoples mental wellbeing. New research has found that women, young people and those living with children have been the most affected. Concerns have ranged from worrying about getting the virus, to job losses, financial pressures, social isolation, and challenging home environments. When people feel that there is very little control in their life, it doesnt take long for hope...lessness and helplessness to set in and trigger sudden and rapid deteriorating mental health. For a variety of reasons, people may also be reluctant to visit their practice. Fortunately, Telehealth Services are available which mean that people can consult their GP for advice and obtain a mental health care plan via Telehealth. Our GPs are able to offer phone consultations and we encourage our patients to take this up as a way of continuing to receive high quality, compassionate and personalised care. Alternatively, you can also speak to our reception team about booking a video consultation. Currently video consultations are only being offered by Dr Saini, however can be expanded to other doctors if there is strong interest. As always, please stay safe and dont hesitate to reach out. Best wishes, Team Rosedale

23.01.2022 Lets get this week started. Jean Hailes for Womens Health has a great segment today talking about "The Wonders Down-Under". Topics include vaginal and vulval health, uterus, cervix and ovaries, health checks and STI checks, and how to watch out for signs of ovarian cancer. For women who may have missed a scheduled health check (such as a cervical screening test, breast check, heart health check or STI check) in the past months, Womens Health Week serves as a valuable reminder call your GP and book that appointment today.

23.01.2022 Good morning, just wanted to hit pause to ask you how you are doing? Have a think about your response to that question for a moment. What did you say? According to therapist, author and speaker Esther Perel, some of us are naturally inclined to answer this question by saying good or great.... Sometimes, we feel the overwhelming need to put on a brave face in front of others, especially our loved ones. We may feel detached from what is happening in the world around us, or we may simply not give ourselves permission to be truthful to others, or our selves. One thing about COVID-19 is certain. It has disproportionately affected our mental health, and many of us are struggling. Wed like to remind our community that each and every one of our GPs at Rosedale Medical Practice is skilled in providing mental health support and can assist you and your family with the resources that you need during this difficult time. Now with Telehealth phone and video consults, it is easier than ever to speak with our caring, friendly and expert GP team. Book an appointment via HotDoc, or call to speak to our reception team on 02 9680 9644. Best wishes, Team Rosedale Photo courtesy of Kids Helpline Official

23.01.2022 Australia is on track to eliminate cervical cancer by 2035. We could be the first country in the world to eliminate cervical cancer as a public health problem. This achievement is possible because of the success of HPV (Human Papilloma Virus) screening and vaccination. HPV vaccine reduces the risk of:... - cervical cancer in females - genital cancer in males - genital warts (males and females) Now is a great time to look after your health. Heres three things that you can do to protect you and your family: 1) Participate in the free Gardasil (HPV) School Vaccination Program. The HPV vaccine is usually given in year 7, to boys and girls between 12-13 years of age. 2) If your child has missed her or his Gardasil vaccine at school, please book in with your GP for a catch up vaccine (please let reception know so that we can order this in for you) 3) Book in with your GP if you are due for a Pap (Cervical) smear. Please call reception on 02 9680 9644 to make a booking. Best wishes, Team Rosedale

23.01.2022 Recovery after a stroke can be difficult. Stroke survivor Katrina shares her story and the power of YET: From Katrina: Its amazing the power of three little letters. They can change the whole way you look at things. - Y.e.t. It can change "I cant climb stairs" into "I cant climb stairs yet". It can change "I cant read those words" into "I cant read those words yet".... https://bit.ly/3495nFP

23.01.2022 In line with recommendations from NSW Health, - All patients that require face to face appointments will be required to wear a face mask on entering the practice. We encourage you to bring your own where possible, or alternatively can provide you with one on arrival. From shaving foam to masking tape, this article from Medical Republic has some (odd but) useful tips to help you achieve a comfortable fit and stop your glasses from fogging up!... 21.01.2022 Happy Friday. Reminder that this is a totally normal reaction, so be kind to yourself. Be sure to allow time for rest, relaxation and restoration this weekend.... - Liz Fosslien, author of No Hard Feelings: The Secret Power of Embracing Emotions at Work. #kindness #selfcare #balance

21.01.2022 COVID-19 update A decreased number of new cases in NSW has been reassuring, however the virus is still circulating. Areas of particular concern include southwest and western Sydney, where multiple cases are cropping up in these areas with no known source.... Testing for COVID-19 is still very important. The goal in NSW is to eliminate community transmission. Testing will help with this. All people with symptoms, as well as any person who has visited areas and venues identified as hotspots, should get tested for COVID-19 and self-isolate as per guidelines from NSW health. Stay well, stay safe. Best wishes, Team Rosedale

21.01.2022 #StrokeRecovery #Rehabilitation There is life and hope after stroke. With time, new routines will become second nature.... Rehabilitation can build your strength, capability and confidence. It can help you continue your daily activities despite the effects of your stroke. So what is rehabilitation? Rehabilitation is the therapy and activities you do that help you recover after a stroke. It helps you to re-learn or find new ways of doing things that were affected by your stroke. Rehabilitation uses a principle called neuroplasticity. Neuroplasticity is your brains ability to change and adapt by forming new brain pathways. This means that other parts of the brain can take over the functions of those parts that were affected by your stroke. When should rehabilitation start? We now know more about strokes than ever before. For example, we now understand that there is no limit to the extent of your rehabilitation and that improvement can last for years. People that develop an optimistic outlook often make the most of their recoveries, and there is no better time to develop this attitude than the present. We also know that how much you get out depends on how much you put in. We also know that starting rehabilitation early after a stroke can lead to better outcomes. This is why its important for health professionals like physiotherapists and speech pathologists to start working with you as soon as possible after your stroke. Information, education, support and love are the most important aspects of rebuilding life after brain injury. The EnableMe website is an amazing resource and we encourage everyone to check it out for more information and tools. As always, please reach out to your general practice team at Rosedale Medical Practice if you have any questions, or if you would like to know more about reducing your stroke risk, stroke treatment or recovery from your stroke. Were here to help! Best wishes, Team Rosedale

21.01.2022 A message of gratitude. We appreciate the additional rebates that were available to our patients during the early stages of COVID-19. Whilst small, they allowed us to absorb some of the costs of providing a high quality medical service and offer bulk-billed Telehealth services to our most vulnerable patients. We acknowledge and respect that these were temporary measures, and have been removed as of today.... As a result of this, we will be moving back to our normal fee structures. That is, all face to face, and Telehealth phone and video consults will be billed at our normal fees. We will continue to bulk-bill Pension card holders and children under the age of 5 years. As a practice, we value the safety and care of our patients above all else. We remain committed to providing the highest standards of health care, whether this is face to face, over the phone or via video. We are also aware that COVID-19 has affected our community in various ways. We acknowledge that our patients experience health care physically, psychologically, socially, financially and in other ways. We are committed to stepping forward, leaning in and participating in new solutions to new problems as we navigate a new world. If you are affected financially as a result of COVID-19, we may be able to consider alternative financial arrangements for you. Please feel free to speak to our practice manager to discuss your concerns. You can organise a time to speak with our practice manager, Gurleen, by calling reception on 02 9680 9644. With best wishes, Team Rosedale

20.01.2022 You sustain change not through doing more, but by becoming more. And to be more requires constant reflection. Marshall Goldsmith breaks this down into 10 key daily questions. You can pick any number of these to begin with, and build your list over time.... Did I do my best to: 1 Set clear goals? 2 Make progress towards goal achievement? 3 Find meaning? 4 Be happy? 5 Build positive relationships? 6 Be fully engaged? 7 Develop new material? 8 Practice gratitude? 9 Not waste energy on what I can’t change? Be present with my family? I’m curious. Which of these daily questions do you resonate with most? What do you need to be asking more of? Share your thoughts by commenting below, and feel free to share this list with your friends, colleagues and loved ones. Bowel cancer affects people at all ages and stages of life. 1 in 10 Australians are diagnosed with bowel cancer BEFORE the age of 50. ... Almost 99% of bowel cancers can be successfully treated. Important points: Youre never too young to have bowel cancer Do not assume that your symptoms relate to other causes such as haemorrhoids, food intolerances, a normal part of recovery after having a baby or even just a result of a living hectic lifestyle GET TESTED. Three steps you can take right now: If youve received a bowel cancer testing kit in the mail, dont delay, get it done! 15.01.2022 It’s okay to dream. As Walt Disney said, all our dreams can come true, if we have the courage to pursue them. BUT... Sometimes, dreams can be scary, especially for our children. We often call these dreams nightmares. So here’s a few tips suggested by the Mayo Clinic for how to have less frightening dreams. Establish a regular, relaxing routine before bedtime. Offer reassurances. Talk about the dream. Rewrite the ending. Put stress in its place by talking about it. Provide comfort measures. Use a night light. Remember, your GP team is here to help and can assist in providing the right support, resources and treatment for your needs. Book online using HotDoc, or call our friendly reception team on 02 9680 9644. Best wishes, Team Rosedale

15.01.2022 Isnt it ironic, that at at time where we have lost so, so much, where there is overwhelming scarcity and inequity in the world, that some people have so much more of themselves to give? The generosity of the human spirit is so palpable right now. During times of crisis, we find that people who feel better equipped to bring their full and authentic selves into the world tend to do better in confronting the most challenging of circumstances. They also have more to give to othe...rs, and in giving more, they find a way to receive more. I heard Ronni Kahn AO talk about #resilience yesterday. Her definition opened my mind - "to advance through adversity". How absolutely simple yet so powerful. Ronni Kahn is the founder of OzHarvest, Australias largest food rescue organisation, driven by a passion to make a difference and stop good food going to waste. So much of resilience has to do with #permission. Permission to be kind to ourselves. Permission to prioritise our needs. Permission to take time out and practice self-care. Permission to allow the full expression of our emotions. Permission to accept ourselves and others for all of our imperfections and vulnerabilities. Permission to "be". I want you to know its okay not to be okay. And when youre not okay, its okay to seek help. If you dont know where to go for help, your GP is a great place to start. And if you dont have a regular GP, Rosedale is here to welcome you with open arms.

11.01.2022 Learn F.A.S.T. and save a life In Australia, a stroke occurs every 9 minutes. Almost 19,000 strokes will be experienced by NSW residents this year and there are almost 160,000 stroke survivors living in the NSW community.... The first step in ensuring better outcomes from stroke is getting to hospital quickly, and that means recognising the F.A.S.T. signs and calling triple zero (000) straight away. 08.01.2022 Wishing all the dads out there a Happy Fathers Day. What we know... a healthy dad helps to make a healthy family. Fathers Day is a great reminder of the importance of a mentally and physically healthy dad. Why?... A dad who makes his health a priority is more present with his children, happier at home, and a more supportive partner. What struggles can dads face? Lack of sleep, changes in relationships and lifestyle, and new responsibilities are common experiences for new dads. Following their childs birth, men are sometimes left with little attention. What can dads do? Talk about it - dad stress is real. Talking to your partner and GP can help Exercise, eat well, and take time out - hobbies can be useful Counselling and medication are also options sometimes What can families do? 1 Men often visit their GP after a lot of encouragement from their partner or another family member. You can encourage the men in your life to reach out and book an appointment 2 Let dad know that its okay to talk, and that talking can help 3 Ask twice - a handy little trick. Men may not respond to are you okay the first time. Asking again can help. 4 Do things together - men often find it easier to talk when talking isnt the main focus. Playing golf together, or going for a drive, can be a good way to get the conversation started 5 Book in a mens health check with your GP - a full physical can be an important, non-threatening way to address both physical and mental health needs. Coming in solely to discuss mental health is daunting, but a whole-person consultation with your GP can be easier to manage 6 Call MensLine Australia on 1300789978, a great way to receive counselling and advice over the phone, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Stay safe and best wishes, Team Rosedale

03.01.2022 #throwback to this incredible feedback we received from one of our medical students. Why did this matter so much? Because it spoke of the establishment of a cascade or network effect. There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that this medical student will go on to do extraordinary things, and carry the torch of passion, innovation, care and excellence that transforms the lives of her patients and her colleagues.... This is why being a teaching practice is so very important to us, and why we MUST get it right. I leave Rosedale Medical Practice with the conviction that medicine is filled with joy and endless potential. It really is, and general practice has the power to change the lives of both those receiving and delivering care. 02.01.2022 What do I do if I suspect Ive had a mini stroke? Just like a stroke, TIAs (transient ischemic attacks, also known as mini strokes) are a medical emergency. They look just like strokes, with one key difference: people fully recover from TIAs and there is no permanent brain damage.... A person who suffers a TIA has more than a one in 20 (5%) risk of having a stroke within one week. That drops to about a one in 100 (1%) risk if a person gets emergency care immediately after a TIA. People may not seek care because they feel better. BUT it is very important that they go to hospital immediately. We need to figure out right away what is wrong and get people on the right treatment to reduce the risk of a stroke. The symptoms of a TIA are the same as the symptoms of a stroke. They include: - Sudden weakness on one side of the body - Inability to move part or all of one side of the body - Numbness or tingling on one side of the body - Trouble speaking or understanding what others say - Dizziness, staggering, or fainting - Sudden loss of strength in the leg If you experience any of these symptoms, dont delay. Call 000 straight away. #strokeweek2020 #tia #ministroke #medicalemergency

01.01.2022 We regularly talk to our patients about organisational health and toxic workplace cultures. Many of us spend a lot of our day at work. A good workplace can enrich our lives as well as our physical, emotional and social health. On the other hand, toxic workplaces can rob us of our joy and cause negative feelings that can spill over into other aspects of our lives. They can cause relationship and marital strain, and cause feelings of overwhelm, burnout, stress, anxiety and ...depression. But what is a healthy organisation? One aspect of healthy organisations is that they are built on vulnerability-based trust. According to organisational health expert and author Patrick Lencioni, these are some of the statements you might hear if you work in a healthy organisation. I screwed up I made a mistake I need help Your idea is better than mine I wish I could do that as well as you do I’m sorry I’m curious, what does trust look like in your organisation? How often do you hear any of the above statements? Remember, if your work is affecting your mental health, your GP is always a great person to talk to. As always, we’re here for you and ready to listen. To book an appointment, call our friendly reception team on 02 9680 9644, or book online using our convenient HotDoc app. Stay safe and best wishes, Team Rosedale
