25.01.2022 A newly published paper from University of South Australia found the use of antidepressants and opioids by older people doubled the risk of fall or hip fractures. http://bit.ly/2F7TK4O (article from Talking Aged Care) The research found that psychotropic drugs are used on a variety of conditions, like depression, pain and dementia, but the side effects can be quite significant, including drowsiness, dizziness and blurred vision, all of which increase the risk of falls and fracture.

25.01.2022 When Margo Baker was in her second year of her registered nursing degree, she had an experience that changed the course of her career. My grandfather was in a palliative care unit and I was so impressed by the care he was given by the nursing staff, she said. It inspired her to specialise in palliative care in her graduate year.... it is such a privilege to work with families and their loved ones in the last stage of their lives and support them through this hard time. As a society, we are quite removed from the dying process, and it is our job as nurses to alleviate that stress and fear and create a beautiful space around their loved ones, Margo said. http://bit.ly/2SAkMav

We are excited to be partnering with HESTA to fund a new trial by Nurse Researcher Dr James Hughes and his team from QUT (Queensland University of Technology) and Metro North Hospital and Health Services Royal Brisbane and Womens Hospital. The study will explore if providing therapeutic activity kits to people with dementia could reduce the use of psychoactive medication, sedation and... physical restraints in emergency departments. If the trial is successful, the kits could be a permanent fixture in hospital emergency departments in years to come. http://bit.ly/2ZrcAzU Image: Nurse Researcher, Dr James Hughes with Registered Nurse Leonie Higgs and the HESTA team.
