22.01.2022 Say it with zinc, a scrunchy or leg warmers - or any pink you have - and donate a gold coin for breast cancer research in this weekend’s annual pink round.
22.01.2022 Tip 5: Hungry netballers will need to pack some snacks as the BBQ and canteen will not be operating at Northern Suburbs this season.
22.01.2022 Dear NSNA Community - we made it - we played netball during a pandemic! Thank you all for joining us in this shortened 2020 season. A season that none of us i...n our lifetimes has ever experienced. I would like to thank all Club administrators for their work during the season as they dealt with ever changing parameters due to Covid-19 and helped ensure the safety and wellbeing both physically and mentally of their players. And thank you umpires, players, coaches, managers and families for being so understanding and appreciative. Congratulations to you all whether you won, lost or drew - it made us all appreciate our love of netball, community and each other. I give a Herculean thanks to the 2020 Executive and our business administrator for sticking out this exploration of administering netball during a pandemic. Please note, I use the word exploration instead of journey because the word ‘journey’ indicates a definitive start point, a road map and an end point - none of which we had. Administering netball in a pandemic saw us dealing with a constantly moving start point, changing and frustrating parameters such as a limit of 500 people and 20 minutes between games. And still the team persevered, remaining flexible and optimistic as they forged ahead through unchartered territory to find a safe and compliant way for us to play netball. The spirit of exploration and the power of creativity, teamwork and collaboration are what have enabled us all - clubs, players, umpires, coaches and the Exec Committee to put on the 2020 season. Thank you.We give huge thanks to Mayor Gail Giles Gidney and the team at Willoughby Council for supporting us this year, in particular by waiving grounds hire fees meaning we are able to pass on this fee reduction onto our clubs. Thank you also for the terrific new seating area and landscaping around the courts and assistance in the car park. In April, during isolation, having time on our hands we partnered with the Northern Sydney Area Health Staff Appreciation Project and Northbridge Plaza to collect donations for Covid-19 testing nurses at Royal North Shore and Ryde Hospitals. These frontline nurses do a terrific job carrying out thousands of tests daily and the endless hours and hand-washing they do deserves a show of appreciation. Thanks to so many of you for donating goods to these amazing people. When we were first shut down in March and then sent into isolation in April two of our long serving Norths players, coaches and umpires in Sarah Antico and Mikaela Marsh showed great initiative and ownership in creating player focused fitness and skills videos as well as coach the coaches film clips which were then made available to all members during Covid. They are this year’s winners of the Eddie and Mary Britt Appreciation Award. We thank them for their willingness to give of their time over the years but especially in 2020. This year’s Pat Clarke Service Award is shared by both our Grounds Convenor, Donna Baker OAM and Mel Fisher, Representative Convenor for their outstanding work this season. Many of you might be familiar with the dulcet tones of Donna Baker OAM as she corrals the players in the top car park and reminds everyone to sanitise and social distance. Donna, your energy and experience is overwhelming - thank you for helping to make this season possible. Mel Fisher, our new 2020 Representative Convenor undertook a massive overhaul of processes and implemented new systems whilst managing ever changing logistics around (a now cancelled) State Titles, helped organised numerous mini carnivals so our Reps could have a semi-rep season and umpired Rep Games as well. Thank you Mel for your many, many hours spent on the Representative Program. This year’s Joan Burge Award for outstanding club volunteer goes to Catherine Stokes from Willoughby United. Cath has been a member of WUNC since 1994. Her involvement in the Club has been enormous and she has played, managed, umpired, mentored, selected and coached. She has been involved with WUNC for over 26 years and always shows heart and a love of the game at all levels. The 2020 Joe Hockey Junior Encouragement Award was won by Matilda Damian (Loreto) and Donna Mai (WGHS) for both showing maturity, a willingness to help and dedication to netball through umpiring, playing and coaching at both a club and Association level. We congratulate these two great ladies for embodying what it means to be a Norths girl. This year’s Club Coach of the Year Award (donated by Monte) goes to Lyn McDonald, coach at North Sydney Juniors. Lyn’s passion for netball is infectious and her knowledge and love of the game is reflected in the girls she coaches. This years President’s Award goes to Glenys Paranihi our Competition Convenor for being a fabulous mentor not only to myself but also to others within the Association and for using her extensive knowledge of the MyNetball system to enable us to continue to play despite the ever changing circumstances and withdrawals and requirements of Clubs. Her service to the Association over the years in various roles including Vice President, Competition Convenor and President as well as Junior and Senior State Titles Coach, Metro League Coach, State Cup Coach, various Netball NSW Committees and Willoughby Council committees over the past 15 years has made her a worthy, dedicated and knowledgeable recipient. Thank you and congratulations Glenys. I thank each and every member of the 2020 Executive; April Butler Vice President and Covid Officer, Katrina Damian Secretary and resident medico and lawyer, Katarina Vencel Treasurer and Guru who knows how to apply for any grant known to man, Competitions Convenor Glenys Paranihi for re-doing the draw on multiple occasions, umpiring convenor Eileen Hukins for all those levelling and badging requests and settling of disputes, Jenny Gage Coaching Convenor who has ensured coaches across both the association and the Representative program were informed and up skilled, Mel Fisher our Rep Convenor who has grabbed her new role with both hands, to Toni Palmer for Sunday’s facilitation of our super well organised NetSetGo Program and last but not least, our business administrator Marie Cherote for keeping us all organised. We still have the postponed Round 8 of Friday night games to be held next Friday 11 September so will see those of you then. Our Twilight Competition will be open for registration on Monday and as teams register directly with NSNA they are all required to have an accredited umpire and CovidSafe Officer. Visit our website for details. I wish all of you a healthy and happy off-season and I hope that you join us as we continue our exploration of Netball in the time of Covid. Here’s to taking the best parts from this time and the best parts from ‘normal’ times to hopefully create the best of times in 2021 and beyond.
