22.01.2022 In 2014, the Memorial commissioned Senior Torres Strait Islander Rosie Ware to retrospectively interpret the experience of the Second World War and its legacy i...n the Torres Strait. Working predominantly in lino-block, handpainted fabrics that combine traditional Torres Strait cultural production and symbolism with non-Indigenous imagery, Ware has drawn on her own family history of military service. Rosie’s father, Elia Ware served in the Torres Strait Infantry Unit on Thursday Island. He was taken on strength in 1941 and ascended the ranks over four years of service, and when discharged in 1945 was an acting sergeant. His story is not unlike other Torres Strait Islanders; upon the cessation of the War, he lost all access to his payments from serving in the military. ‘Torres Strait Light Infantry Battalion’ is a three textile panel work that can be exhibited individually, or together as a triptych. The positive feedback she receives drives her to keep working, creating and designing to share her culture through art. Rosie enjoyed getting to know all her PNG sisters, through the first exchange in the #PNGAusPartnership Laikim Sister program. Learning about their businesses, where they live and operate from, hearing their stories and struggles helped her think about her own business, stories and struggles. In Cairns, Rosie hopes to share more of her Torres Strait Islander culture with her PNG sisters. See more
