25.01.2022 "Sapling is not a representation of how the world is, but it is a somewhat mythological depiction of how we could connect with the organisms that surround and support us." In the second instalment of our Artist Talk video series, Patricia Piccinini discusses 'Sapling' (2020); the centrepiece of her exhibition 'The Gardener's Eye' at Roslyn Oxley9 Gallery. The idea behind 'Sapling' grew from Piccinini's sister’s involvement in a protest in Melbourne to save an ancient tree gro...wing in the forecourt of a suburban petrol station. The unique positioning of the man and plant is drawn from an experience the artist had meeting a woman who fosters orphaned tree kangaroos in North Queensland. Watch the full video to hear Piccinini describe the deeply hybrid relationship between a person and a plant/animal chimera, a notion that has been at the forefront of her practice throughout the majority of her career. 09.01.2022 In a recent project with Kids' Home Publishing, John Wolseley creates a story around the life-cycle of a beetle local to his forest studio, using all the techniques which have made him a renowned artist and naturalist. This is a mini masterclass in creativity as play, with a beautiful reading of the finished book by the author. 04.01.2022 Roslyn and Tony Oxley are saddened to learn of the death of John Nixon, a great Australian Artist who had a formative influence on the Gallery in the 1980’s. He was widely admired for the integrity of his practice. His passing represents a big loss for our community. Our condolences go to Sue and Emma.
