25.01.2022 As cliche as this is going to sound and before you put this down as another typical Instagram stereotype, just think about it. Adventure isn’t just about finding new places, it’s about finding yourself. The only way you can learn about the person you are is by putting yourself outside of your comfort zone and doing things that don’t fall within your usual routine. Living on the edge and reacting to a scenario that you’re not used to will create this little buzz you never knew... you had. Think about one of those moments where you went ‘I can’t’, then you went and did it and said ‘I didn’t think I could do that’. That’s what adventure is about, those moments. One of those moments for me was all about heights. I used to be petrified of heights as a kid, then I climbed some mountains that I never thought I could and now look at me...I’ve completely lost my mind and stand at the edge of ledges. Don’t be stupid like me, just be more open to trying new things and being ‘adventurous’. 22.01.2022 A few special moments from my dive trip at South West Rocks last month. Not only was the diving incredible, but the sunrise from Smoky Cape Lighthouse was beautiful. You know how much I love kangaroos so seeing around ten up at the lighthouse was a highlight of the trip. I also met a guy staying at the lighthouse cottages who knew the ocean like the back of his hand. He passed on some technical knowledge about water visibility, swell directions, blue water currents and marine... travel patterns that he has observed over 30 years out on the seas. I always take the time to chat to locals because they have so much knowledge that can make a huge difference to any trip. Have you ever been to South West Rocks? The Grey Nurse Sharks populate in the colder months and in the warmer months the leopard sharks move in and take over. 21.01.2022 The connection I have with the underwater world has become so so strong lately. It’s all I seem to think about when I’m on land and it’s certainly going to dictate my future. It brings me so much joy. The peacefulness underwater can not be matched by anything else. It’s the one way I can escape the harsh reality of 2020. However, it isn’t all things bright and beautiful. Right now it also brings so much sadness and anxiety. That’s as a result of the terrestrial world’s impact.... I’ve been sharing a lot of stuff lately about oil spills, fishing and shark finning and how it’s affecting our oceans. It’s sad to see that when I do this, I get unfollowed and messages from people asking me to just post sunsets and sunrises. Why should we ignore the reality of what’s happening? The media showed a five second clip relating to the oil spill in the Mauritius but then devoted 60 seconds to a pig running off with some human clothes and some naked guy chasing it the other day. Sure, it’s funny and good to escape all the negativity, but come on, how can we ignore what we are doing to this world? It’s really getting me down. When I spend time looking into the eyes of these beautiful creatures, it sticks in my head and I want nothing more than for them to live in an environment that they’re familiar and happy with. Maybe if you experience something similar, you’ll all feel the same. 20.01.2022 It’s been a bad week for surfers and sharks. My condolences and thoughts go out to the family and friends of the surfer that died. It’s these events that shake a community and I’m sure the Gold Coast is going through a tough time processing what’s happened. Surfers, divers and everyone else who enters the ocean accepts that you take a risk. We are not the apex predator. But can more be done? Yes! Culling, drum lines, shark nets, these are all actions being used to ‘help’. The... question is, are they helping? No. $17.1m has been spent by the government actioning archaic measures that have failed since their inception in the 1930s. Only $1m has been spent on investigating alternatives. Shark nets, drum lines and culling just act as chum for other sharks. They’re ambush predators, so if a whale, seal, or a smaller shark is distressed in a net, bigger sharks will be attracted to that struggle and so they will investigate and attack. This draws them in closer to shore as a result. Therefore a government with such an archaic mindset is actually proving to be even more dangerous as opposed to offering a solution. So what other alternatives are there? Well, in my opinion, education is the single most effective solution. If people are aware of a sharks environment, then they can react. I also think that the drone trials being actioned in NSW is a good one and very effective. I certainly do not agree with culling. The tiger shark which was caught and killed yesterday in QLD had nothing to do with the attack as a tooth lodged in the victim’s surfboard was that of a great white. So why should that tiger shark be killed? What are your thoughts? 16.01.2022 Falling head over heels in love with @visitnsw lately. Being contained here isn’t so bad when you’re having experiences like this with your favourite travel buddy! The last few months have consisted of packing up the swag and heading on the open road to all the best camping spots around NSW. If you don’t camp, now is the time to start! It’s not only a cost effective way to travel, but it’s also the best way to fully immerse yourself into nature. I do however love a good hotel.... Especially ones on the beach. 15.01.2022 One of my favourite sharks, the Spotted Wobbegong. These guys come in a variety of shapes, patterns and sizes. Some can grow upto 3m long and when they get to that size boy do they look big. These beautiful creatures spend a lot of their time hiding under rocks, but I’ve been lucky enough to see them on a number of occasions swimming. Funnily enough this is the one shark which I am most cautious around because they’re the only shark that have the ability to bite their tail, s...o if you sneak up behind them and spook them, chances are you could get bitten. I’ve had one instance of a wobby going for me and damn did I my . 10.01.2022 A morning of patience. A dingo patiently waits for a feed whilst the fisherman patiently waits for a catch. These are wild animals and I shot these at 16mm so you can imagine how close I got. I felt comfortable in their presence and they felt comfortable with mine. Just don’t turn your back on these guys because they’ll sneak up on you. I was running for sunrise and came around a blind corner and a dingo was running in the opposite direction round the same blind corner, I thi...nk both of us had the shock of our lives. It was a beautiful moment when I think about it as we both side stepped around each other and then carried on. I’m looking forward to some more camping adventures over November. 09.01.2022 This cloud formation over Mt Ruapehu is known as a lenticular cloud. As the wind flows over large features like this mountain, it may cool, causing the air to condense into disk-shaped clouds that develop perpendicular to the direction of the air flow. These clouds have often been mistaken for UFOs as they take that ‘saucer’ kind of look. This one I’d say is a bit to big to be UFO, but then again, remember the film Independence Day? That UFO was pretty big. To be able to witn...ess such an uncommon event like this unfold makes me really appreciate just how incredible the natural world is. 07.01.2022 The Wobbegong shark is part of the carpet shark family. They move with such grace and style. That still doesn’t take away from the fact that when these guys get close, I move away. I’ve spoken to numerous divers that have had a bite from a wobby and apparently they really latch on and you’ll have to basically take them out of the water for them to release . This was shot at 10mm, way too close for comfort. I lost the game of chicken. 06.01.2022 You’ve probably heard divers talking about cleaning stations but have no idea what these are. Well, it’s the underwater version of a car wash. This where you’re likely to find aquatic life being cleaned by smaller creatures. The cleaning process includes the removal of parasites from the animals body (inside and out). This is usually performed by cleaner shrimp and small species of fish like wrasses and gobies. A turtle for example will approach the cleaning station and signa...l for a cleaning by opening its mouth wide or position its body in such a way. The cleaner fish will then remove and eat the parasites from the skin, shell and even the gills or sharks. Fish also act like dentists to sharks by cleaning the leftovers on their teeth. This whole process is known as cleaning symbiosis. Look at the difference between the first turtle and last in this series. Diamond Head is @nswnationalparks most premier camp spot as it provides everything you could want from quiet right handers , kangaroos and 4x4ing on the beach . 01.01.2022 How far do you need to go to close to sharks? Not very far at all. It’s only since drones have come about that people have only started to realise and become aware of how close they are. North of Sydney on the NSW coast, it’s almost guaranteed that I’ll find some. Doesn’t that make you think, hey, maybe they’re not these vicious dangerous animals? Because if they were, perhaps the number of sharks biting humans would be higher than the number of humans biting humans. Try and guess the three species of sharks in these photos. This is a leopard shark (Australia) or zebra shark (rest of the world) and it’s one of my favourites! Did you also know that a bait ball of frenzied salmon swarm in their tightly packed spheres and tornado formations to better protect themselves against sharks? The patterns that these guys make are mesmerising, look at the comma or apostrophe this grey nurse shark has created. Bait balls are one of biggest risks to surfers. When sharks are in a feeding frenzy, their judg...ement is impaired and consequently the person sitting at the surface will feel the brunt of it. Some indicators you can look out for are choppy patches of water, jumping fish or birds hovering above and swooping.
