25.01.2022 Jingellic BlazeAid and Local Farmers Thank You BBQ On Wednesday 18th March, seven RCAN members and one partner cooked and served a BBQ meal on behalf of the Jingellic Bushfire Recovery Group for the Jingellic BlazeAid Camp and a small group of Lions Club members who had been cooking for them for over a week. There was much good fun banter between the Lions members and us as to the quality of the cooking and speed of service!! Local farmers who had benefited from the BlazeAid fencing work so far were also there to say a hearty thank you! As well, RCAN provided special sweets for the get together. All provisions for the meal were purchased locally in the Upper Murray to further assist in the Bushfire recovery.

24.01.2022 FACE-TO-FACE We had the pleasure of our first face-to-face Rotary meeting for some time on Tuesday evening at The Manor House, while following Covid-19 procedures. Incoming President, Peter Richardson, addressed the members that were present on some items of general business. We were entertained by our RCAN Voices choir which was very special. Our guest speaker was one of our members, Dean Hutton. Dean reflected on his many years working for Nestle. During that time he ha...d 10 changes of address around the world, including nine years in Switzerland which he and his family enjoyed very much. He described a trip to Madagascar to investigate vanilla production for the company. Farmers in Madagascar produce 80% of the world's vanilla using very labour intensive hand-pollination of the plants. Vanilla is native to Mexico where a native bee performs the pollination, but it is not economical to produce it in Mexico. See more

18.01.2022 COUNTRY CONNECTION Our guest at our regular Zoom club meeting on Tuesday 2 June was Fanny Lumsden. Fanny is a resident of the Tooma area and an award-winning country music singer/songwriter. She described her experiences with the bush fires in the Tooma area in December/January. She launched her third album, Fallow, at the Tooma Recreation Reserve on Covid Friday just before the restrictions came into place. Fanny is hoping to continue her very successful Country Halls Tour in the not too distant future. Since 2012 she has played 130 country halls all over Australia. Fanny delighted us with a performance of one of her new songs!

16.01.2022 JINGELLIC HIGH TEA RCAN supported the Jingellic Hub ladies to help make The Jingellic Ladies’ High Tea a huge success. This was the first community outing since the Covid-19 lockdown. It was a great chance for the ladies to enjoy time together after the devastating bushfires earlier in the year.

14.01.2022 MURRAY DARLING BASIN PLAN On Tuesday 22 September our dinner meeting guest was Cr David Thurley, OAM. David is National President of the Murray-Darling Association and a Basin Community Committee member. He highlighted some dilemmas that are confronting the Murray Darling Basin such as, changing climatic conditions which are competing with farming and domestic needs. The Water Act of 2007 promotes the planning and management for equitable, efficient and sustainable use of water resources. David described some of the problems with the buy-backs and efficiency projects which are supposed to achieve this goal. While this is a very complex issue, unfortunately the states are way behind on their water resource plans.

13.01.2022 SINGING FOR MY SUPPER Our guest at our meeting on 11 August was one of our own members, joint President Elect, Anne Hayward. Anne has been singing since she was five years old. In the 60's she moved from the local area to Melbourne and started a band, performing shows in Melbourne, Perth and Albury. She decided to get an agent and look for work overseas. Anne spend six months as resident singer, playing six nights per week, in the Piano Bar of the 6-star Sheraton Walker H...ill hotel in Seoul. At that time Seoul was the second largest city in the world with a population of 22 million. A vibrant and exciting place to be! Following this gig she moved onto Japan where she spent 6 months as the resident singer in the Doke Lounge at the 6-star Tateshina Timeshare Resort for the very wealthy. During the high season her session was five hours per night which could be hard on the vocal cords. Anne has been the driving force behind our club's choir, RCAN Voices. See more

12.01.2022 cPLAN & cBAG Last Tuesday evening our guest was Cristy Jacka. Cristy's husband, Karl, died from a rare type of cancer three and a half years ago. She described aspects of their journey after Karl's diagnosis. Suddenly there was so much information and so much that they didn't know. As they continued on this journey, Cristy realised that so much of what they had learned could be passed onto other patients to help them get better organised and have helpful tips to make th...e journey a little easier. Cristy and Jenny Jensen, AWCF Chair, along with a dedicated committee developed the cPLAN and cBAG. The cPLAN folder is an organiser to keep every piece of information - appointments, medication, test results, journal of symptoms and more. The cBAG contains links to supportive care information and services, as well as products to comfort the mind, body and spirit, e.g. mentos to take away the metallic taste from medication. The aim is to have the cBAG and cPLAN given free to every Australian diagnosed with cancer. See more

11.01.2022 ARRIVEDERCI ANITA At our zoom meeting on Tuesday evening we farewelled our exchange student, Anita Ricco, before she heads back to Italy. Anita has thoroughly enjoyed her year in Australia even though it has been somewhat unusual with the Covid-19 crisis. She has had several trips to Melbourne and Canberra, and spent 10 days in Sydney over Christmas. Unfortunately, the Rock to Reef trip that all the exchange students participate in each year was cancelled due to corona v...irus. During the year Anita found it strange celebrating her 18th birthday in summer instead of winter! Anita has made several strong friendships with her classmates at Xavier High School and her host families, which has resulted in mixed emotions for her on her departure from Albury this weekend. Anita is a wonderful and enthusiastic ambassador for her country and Rotary. We wish her well for her future studies. Hopefully, one day in the future Anita will return to Albury to visit us! 08.01.2022 JACK OF ALL TRADES Our guest at our weekly Zoom club meeting on Tuesday 26 May was Justin Clancy MP, member for Albury. Justin gave us some incite into his life before entering politics and now as our member, some of the problems he deals with. He related a comment his father made to him when Justin was much younger - as a farmer his father regretfully regarded himself as a Jack of all trades and master of none. This spurred Justin to gain qualifications as a vet. He reflected on the variety of work and issues as a vet and as a politician that lead him to develop a deeper understanding of being a "Jack of all trades".
