25.01.2022 Ooh, this could be interesting!

25.01.2022 ROTARY AND BUSINESS GET THINGS DONE. During a recent inventory at its local warehouse, HIVE Property Services identified some goods that were surplus to their current needs. Quick off the mark as usual, they contacted the Rotary Club of Heidelberg and as a result, Heidelberg and Preston Rotary clubs have facilitated the donation of over $2000 worth of white goods, furniture and recreational equipment to the Darusalam Society, a coordinator of support services for the Somali community in the northern suburbs. Thank you HIVE !

22.01.2022 Always interesting to hear some public speaking tips!

22.01.2022 Rotary’s been around for more than a century and you’ve got to be doing something right to last that long! Keeping abreast of the needs of the local and international communities is a good start, and then proactively work to make things better. Pretty simple really but driven by people of passion.

22.01.2022 If everyone follows the rules things will be a lot better a lot quicker.

22.01.2022 BFTP#2 FREE FRUIT! In 2010 and 2011 our Club participated in the Malahang Festival held in the Olympic Village precinct of Heidelberg West. With the support of local suppliers and the Footscray Wholesale Fruit and Vegetable Market we set up our rustic fruit cart and gave away over 1000 pieces of fruit to promote healthy eating amongst children. The idea was well received and we were asked to bring the concept to Banyule Primary School as part of their 2012 Annual School Fete. An all round easy project with definite community benefits.

22.01.2022 What great work has the Rotary Foundation been doing in 2020?

20.01.2022 Congratulations Rotary Club of Melbourne. Well done!!

20.01.2022 Should be an interesting meeting for those who can spare 30 minutes or so, kicks off at 9am Melbourne time next Thursday 24th September.

18.01.2022 We've said it before and we'll say it again, "Rotarians come in all shapes and sizes". Our club is keen to gain younger members with the desire and verve to make changes that will benefit our local and international communities. 18.01.2022 Earlier this month, we invited State Governors around Australia to share a congratulatory message with students accepted into the NYSF Year 12 Program from thei...r state. Normally each of the state Governors and Administrators hosts an event to congratulate participants selected into the NYSF Year 12 Program in their state. This was not possible this year due to COVID restrictions. The first message is from Victorian Governor, The Honourable Linda Dessau AC. The Hon Linda Dessau AC shared this inspiring message with Victorian students attending the 2021 NYSF Year 12 Program and emphasised the crucial role STEM plays in our lives. "You students should feel particularly proud. You have managed to rise above all the hardships and unknowns of the year and you've proven yourself to be a particularly resilient group of achievers. It is without question that your enthusiasm and talent for science has never been more important." If you know a Victorian attending the 2021 NYSF Year 12 Program, tag them in the comments to share these encouraging words from Victorian Governor, The Honourable Linda Dessau AC. 13.01.2022 Good to see Australian Rotarians assisting in Fiji. The Rotary Club of Heidelberg has a small connection with Labasa. In 1999 our club provided accommodation, schooling and support of a young teenager from the there when he was brought to Melbourne for urgent eye surgery by Rotary Oceania Medical Aid for Children. He was here for 6 months and returned later for follow up treatment. He's married now, has a responsible job and lives in Suva.

11.01.2022 BLAST FROM THE PAST #7 Rotarians are a part of a worldwide family, but more importantly most share their daily lives with their own close family members. Often the projects that Rotarians are involved in draw them away from their own family activities and all Rotary clubs greatly appreciate the sacrifices made by families in the name of Service Above Self. Our club has been very fortunate to have the support of the members' families in many of our projects, whether it be cont...rolling car parking at local festivals, selling Trailer Raffle tickets, cooking BBQ's, hosting overseas exchange students, etc., etc. It is important that the contribution of Rotarians' partners, children and relatives is recognised and the Rotary Club of Heidelberg has done that in a variety of ways over the years, from Paul Harris Fellowship recognitions to modest certificate presentations. Families and friends participating in our social events also greatly enhance the occasion and perhaps this exposure to the works of Rotary helps develop a vibrant community spirit among the younger generations. 07.01.2022 TOP TWENTY REASONS PEOPLE JOIN A ROTARY CLUB WHY DO PEOPLE JOIN ROTARY? Why Join Rotary? ... The TOP 20 1. Friendship / Fellowship / Community: In an increasingly complex world, Rotary provides one of the most basic human needs: the need for friendship and fellowship. It is one of two reasons whyRotary began in 1905. 2. Business Development: The second original reason for Rotary's beginning is business development. Everyone needs to network. Rotary consists of a crosssection of every business community. Its members come from all walks of life. Rotarians help each other and collectively help others. 3. Personal Growth and Development: Membership in Rotary ensures continuing growth and education in human relations and personal development. 4. Leadership Development: Rotary is an organization of leaders and successful people. Serving in Rotary positions is like a college education. Leadership is all about learning how to motivate, influence and lead leaders. 5. Citizenship in the Community: Membership in a Rotary club helps develop better community citizens. The average Rotary club consists of the most active citizens of any community. 6. Continuing Education: Each week at Rotary, there is a program designed to keep members informed about what is going on in the community, nation and world. Each meeting provides an opportunity to listen to different speakers on a variety of timely topics. 7. Fun: Rotary is a fun and exciting place to be. 8. Prestige: Rotary members are prominent people: leaders of business, the professions, art, government, sports, military, religion, and all disciplines. Rotary is the oldest and most prestigious service club in the world. Its ranks include executives, managers, and professionals - people who make decisions and influence policy. 9. Citizenship in the World: Every Rotarian wears a pin that says "Rotary International." There are few places on the globe that do not have a Rotary club. Every Rotarian is welcome - even encouraged - to attend any of the 30,000 clubs in 194 nations and geographical regions. This encourages new friendships in both local and world communities. 10. Assistance When Traveling: Traveling Rotarians can secure medical and professional assistance as well as services and advice from fellow Rotarians throughout the world. 11. Public Speaking Skills: Many individuals who joined Rotary were uncomfortable about speaking in public. Rotary develops confidence and skill in public communication and the opportunity to practice and perfect these skills. 12. Entertainment: Every Rotary club and district has parties and activities that contribute to a diverse, yet professional business life. Rotary holds conferences, conventions, assemblies, and institutes that provide entertainment in addition to Rotary information, education, and service. 13. Development of Social Skills: Every week and at various events and functions, Rotary develops one's personality, social skills and people skills. Rotary is for people who like people. 14. Family Programs: Rotary provides one of the world's largest youth exchange programs; high school and college clubs for future Rotarians; opportunities for spouse involvement; and a host of activities designed to help family members in growth and the development of family values. 15. Vocational Skills: Every Rotarian is expected to take part in the growth and development of his or her own profession or vocation; to serve on committees and to teach youth about jobs or vocations. Rotary helps to make each individual a better doctor, lawyer, teacher, etc. 16. The Development of Ethics: Rotarians practice a 4Way Test that governs their ethical standards. Rotarians are expected to be ethical in business and personal relationships. 17. Cultural Awareness: Around the world, practically every religion, country, culture, race, creed, political persuasion, language, color and ethnic identity is represented among members of Rotary. Rotary is a cross section of the world's most prominent citizens who are aware of their cultures and have developed a love of working with people everywhere. They become better citizens of their countries in the process. 18. Nice People: Rotarians are the nicest people on the face of the earth. 19. Absence of an Official Creed: Rotary has no secret handshake, no official creed, no secret meetings or rituals. It is an open society of men and women who simply believe in helping others. 20. Opportunity to Serve: As a service club, Rotary's business is mankind and its product is service. This is perhaps the best reason for becoming a Rotarian: the chance to do good.

05.01.2022 BFTP#4 In November 2011 the Rotary Club of Heidelberg conducted a French themed luncheon at the River Room at Crown, Southbank. The function was the brainchild of Rotarian Mike Stansbury PP, PHF and he recruited renowned chef Gabriel Gate to design the function's menu and give an interesting talk to over 150 guests on the finer points of French cooking. The day was compered by our own Graham "Smokey" Dawson PHF who also interviewed Gabriel and Melbourne Pastry Chef/Chocolatier Kirsten Tibballs, who has recently featured on Channel 10's Junior Master Chef TV show. The event was both a social and financial success with funds being raised for Rotary's End Polio Now campaign

05.01.2022 Sometimes people have walked out of a family violence situation with just the clothes theyre wearing. Or theyve been allocated housing, but they dont have a...ny furniture. Thats where we come in. Since 2015, the Western Emergency Relief Network (WERN) has been supporting people across Melbournes west supplying everything you need to turn a house into a home. Fridges and mattresses. Sofas and crockery. Bedding and washing machines. Theyre backed by local Rotary Clubs and work closely with Melton City Council but the program's administration manager Ross says physical donations come in from all sources. Businesses chip in with goods to spare, and members of the public drop off pre-loved furniture and homewares. And over the past five years, theyve distributed 45,000+ household items and supported more than 5,500 locals to get what they need. The past few months have been busier than usual, with more people struggling because of the pandemic. WERN recently helped a mum with two young kids whod moved and didn't have any furniture. Some of the community supports shed normally turn to arent currently operating so Ross got the call from the council. People normally get to come down to the warehouse and select their own stuff but Ross says the volunteers did their best to pick out things this young family might like. Once restrictions ease, the kids can choose some more things for their rooms and any extra bits and pieces they need. There are thousands of volunteers across Victoria like Ross and the WERN team, who give up their time and energy to help others. And Im guessing there are thousands more who would like to get involved but arent quite sure where to start. Thats why we launched We Volunteer, in partnership with Volunteering Victoria. Its an online portal that matches potential volunteers with organisations for the benefit of the whole community. Because as Ross says, To know you have significantly helped someone just by giving a little of your time is amazing. People helping people. That's what Victoria is all about.

04.01.2022 New members of all shapes and sizes are keenly sought after and warmly welcomed by the Rotary Club of Heidelberg. If you'd like to find out more about becoming a Heidelberg Rotarian, just send us a post or email us at [email protected] and we'll look after you.

04.01.2022 BFTP #6 Rotary Down Under produced "Humanity in Motion" books outlining innovative local and overseas projects of Australian Rotary clubs. These books featured colourful photos and stories of a page or two's length that made very interesting and informative reading. The Rotary Club of Heidelberg purchased more than 150 of these books and distributed them free of charge to businesses, surgeries and hospitals. As we delivered the books, many recipients commented that they'd make a welcome change to the often decade old magazines usually found in their waiting rooms. We have a dozen or so books remaining, so if you'd like one just let us know and we'll get one to you for free while stocks last.

04.01.2022 As we've said before, Rotarians come in all shapes and sizes.

01.01.2022 Tune in Tuesday afternoon for the "Rotary in Action" radio program. 3pm to 4pm Tuesday, September 8. Your host is Rotarian Linda Gidlund of Rotary Diamond Creek.... Her special guest is Grant Godino, of Rotary Strathmore, and he'll be talking to Linda (via Zoom) about "A New Type of Rotary Club!" + One of the goals that many of us set is to give back to our community. Rotary is one such avenue for giving back yet for many the normal Rotary club model does not fit into life. Rotary is encouraging members of Rotary to form different types of clubs. Grant is hoping people might be interested in joining him on a journey to create a new type of Rotary club. What Grant hopes to establish is a club that: is focused around social justice and measuring impact; mainly operates online through an app like Microsoft Teams or Slack; occasionally meets either remotely or in-person for a speaker, vocational event, or social activity; encourages members to visit and engage with other local clubs where a speaker or service event resonates with them, with an aim to do at least 40 hours of service a year; is located in the northern corridor of Melbourne; promotes diversity in age, ethnicity, race, colour, abilities, religion, socioeconomic status, culture, sex, sexual orientation, and gender identity. + That's "Rotary in Action", 3pm to 4pm Tuesday on 96.5 Inner FM. 01.01.2022 BLAST FROM THE PAST #3 In May 2012 our Club was invited to assist with a "Fishing for All Abilities" day hosted by the Northern Fly Fishing Club at Yarrambat Park Lake. Our Rotarians provided some nourishment for all and the expert anglers from NFFC shared piscatorial skills, tales and good times with their guests from various disability support services in the region. A fun day was had by all.
