25.01.2022 Robbie Denman entertained us about his recent African adventures. If you have never been to Africa- start saving for a trip of a lifetime. Cultural dance festival at a Massi village learning about hunting rituals and daily life living in such harsh conditions. Massi males can have from 3 -18 wives with 90 kids, and walking kilometres a day just on goats milk. Mating rituals of lions and the mass migration of 300 elephants crossing waterways trunk and tails joined as well as b...uffalo heading for the watering holes. watching 2 cheetahs running 100km/hr over 300metres was amazing to watch as they missed a few springboks. APT tour company sponsor a school in Tanzania - they supply the children with uniforms - Robbie's tour group raised $400 which bought books and writing equipment for every student. 25.01.2022 EARTHSHIP ZOOMS TO THE ROTARY CLUB OF MACKAY Today’s technology is amazing! Thanks to the virtual conference app, Zoom, the Rotary Club of Mackay was recently given a tour of an Earthship in France. What is an Earthship? It is a self sufficient house which uses waste products such as old tyres, bottles and cans in its construction and operates off the grid.... What is the connection with the Rotary Club of Mackay? In 2003, Pauline Massart came to Australia as a Rotary Exchange student. She stayed in Mackay for a year and lived with four Mackay families during her stay. Even as a 17 year old, Pauline showed a quiet determination to make things happen. She had a dream to live at Bondi and learn to surf. Sure enough, a few years later Pauline came back to Australia and lived at Bondi where she had the opportunity to surf every day! When her Australian work visa ended, Pauline returned to her home in Brussels, Belgium to continue her tertiary education. After finishing her studies, Pauline went to the USA where she lived in Santa Monica, California and for a while in Portland, Oregon. Now Pauline, her partner, Ben and their daughter live in their Earthship in France. As with anything worthwhile, a lot of effort was required for Pauline and Ben to make their Earthship a reality. They organised for Michael Reynolds, an architect based in New Mexico and known for the design and construction of Earthships to have the first Earthship academy in Europe. The four weeks of training in how to build an Earthship took place on Ben and Pauline’s property in a little village in the Dordogne, France The school began in July, 2017. And so began all the hard work that has led to this amazing self sufficient house. As well as living in a sustainable house, Pauline and Ben strive to be environmentally conscious in all other aspects of their life. This includes growing their own food and monitoring the amount of rubbish they produce. They aim for a ‘Zero Waste’ lifestyle right down to the way they use their water. Pauline has also conducted workshops to teach others how to reduce their rubbish. They have every reason to be proud of their achievements so far. This is what Pauline says about their unusual house: "We love our house soooo much :):):) It's like a living thing that cares for us and we need to care for. The house protects, nourishes, heats and cools us. But she needs us to open/close the ventilation, she needs us to take shower to bring water to the planter, etc...We have built a strong relationship that we never had with our former houses/apartments." 25.01.2022 It was nice to celebrate Rotary’s birthday at the Shamrock with the Mackay West club. It was a great evening of minimal speeches and plenty of fellowship. Ken Kelly did a great job of cutting the cake and our DG Michael lifting our spirits with an energetic speech on why Rotary is important to the world and also our local community.... It was also a good opportunity to sell plenty of meat tray tickets for Saturday. Kent (President Mackay West) was looking for volunteers to be part of a board for the Carinya Project. If anyone is interested please contact the club. The Mayors Golf Day is getting some momentum. A sponsorship Package will be available soon. 24.01.2022 Incoming DGE Adele Hughes from Gladstone is getting ready for the changeover. Clubs will be receiving in June a bag of goodies for the changeover. Handover dinner will be via Zoom on the 4th July 2020. District visits start in July.

ROMAC provides specialist treatment for children from developing countries, in the form of life saving and dignity restoring surgery, not accessible to them in their home country. ... 19.01.2022 2 Aussie ( Diego ) Day 2020 celebrations with Diego and Luana plan B was hastily put together due to a wash out. 2018 Citizen of the Year and all-round good bloke Robbie Denman offered his tractor shed. 80+ guests share the day with them. A wonderful celebration after their citizenship ceremony. The shed really took on a great Aussie Day atmosphere. The guests of honour, Diego, Luana and little Miriam arrived all dressed in the...ir finest, but before too long Diego had shed his slick blue suit and showed us that he had truly taken his Australian citizenship seriously, having donned his shorts, T-shirt, cap, work boots and his Aussie BBQ Legend apron, all ready to feed the masses an excellent feast of snags & onions on bread. W President James welcomed every-one and handed over to host Rob to say a few well chosen words, which included the very interesting fact that we were gathered on the actual site of the first settlers (his family) in the Habana area around 1873, and that it was also in close proximity to where the first Italian immigrants settled as well. Carmel Barrett said a few words on behalf of the Italian community in congratulating Diego and Luana, after which Lyn presented them with a gift hamper full of true blue Aussie treats from our Rotary Club of Mackay .



18.01.2022 Tonight we enjoyed a vocational visit to the Resources Centre of Excellence, a state of the art training facility located in Paget. Members and guests had a tour of the facilities that simulate a real underground coal mine as well as the training rooms of the centre. The Marian Railway Hotel was packed of very happy, well fed and suitably hydrated patrons, ... with a few more from the big smoke in Mac-KAY (emphasis intentional) for our social night. The valley community is a vibrant community, called a satellite suburb of Mackay, but increasingly self sufficient and a place that has always had its own identity, in recent years it's become a hub for families and people who want "space to swing a cat". The development out there, which our own John Hocking has been a driving force, is a sign of optimism in our part of the world. Thanks to Simone for organising and driving the PCYC bus and John for the Esky (for which I utilised quite voluntarily). We need to do it more. Next week we are with West Mackay for their anniversary dinner. It's always nice to go to our children's birthday parties, especially once they're all grown up and fend for themselves. 10.01.2022 Rotary Club of Mackay held their 7th zoom meeting Tuesday 12th May 2020. International toast recognise what other Rotary clubs in the World are doing within their communities to assit others. Peter Roddenby proposed an International Toast to the Rotary Club of Papeete Tahiti French Polynesia who celebrated their 60th anniversary in 2019. ... District 9920 is a geographic area covering a half of Auckland and the seven Pacific nations of American Samoa, Cook Islands, Fiji, French Polynesia, Kiribati, Samoa and Tonga. This is the largest maritime district in Rotary and this unique Pacific influence provides Rotarians with a wide ranging and interesting service opportunities. In this area there are 53 Rotary clubs of which a third are in the Pacific countries. They meet on Monday evenings. Locally the club seeks to identify community needs and then to work with the community to bring lasting improvements. Trees for Survival is an environmental education programme which involves young people growing and planting native trees to restore natural habitats by helping landowners revegetate erosion prone land, improve stream flow and water quality and increase biodiversity. To improve literacy and understanding in Primary School children, clubs provided every year 4 student in low decile schools an illustrated dictionary that will be taken into the home and become a reference for all family members. 01.01.2022 RYDA - Rotary Youth Driver Awareness program was a two day event on 20th & 21st August involved 280 students from 4 Mackay area schools - Mackay High, North High, Sarina High and MCC. Held at PCYC with assistance from PCYC staff, Mackay Police, Liesl's Driving School and Terrance Harmse Let's Drive Driver Training. Helpers from several Mackay Rotary Clubs including North Mackay, West Mackay, Sarina, Walkerston and a great response with 11 members from our Rotary Club of Mackay.
